CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) — The last time war came to this small Southwest Virginia hamlet was April 5, 1865, when 4,000 Union troops under Gen. George B. Stoneman swept through the region intent on destroying the town’s railroad depot.
Now a new battle is raging here and even spilling into neighboring communities. This one is being fought with words. On signs. And means to spread goodwill.
“I was going 2do a bank joke,” KFC lobbed at its Peppers Ferry Road Neighbor, First Bank & Trust Co. But “I lost interest.”

You may have heard of some great battles in American history such as Bunker Hill, Gettysburg, San Juan Hill, and Iwo Jima. But you probably haven't heard about the fun "sign war" that's being waged in the small town of Christiansburg, Virginia.
It all started when a music shop challenged a neighboring shoe store to a sign war with a message posted on its business sign.
"Hey Super Shoes, want to start a sign war?"
And so the war began.

Local Businesses Start A Sign War And It Escalates Hilariously

Other local stores, hair salons, restaurants, and realtors have also joined the sign war. Kabuki Japanese Steakhouse Owner Yoshi Koeda said his business has been booming since he entered the amusing competition.
“It’s an amazing free advertisement for all of us,” Koeda explained. “That’s probably the best part of everything.”
Koeda was actually the third player to join the war and added messages that incorporated song lyrics.
One of Koeda’s signs read: “DQ got the ice, ice baby. But we got flamin’ volcanoes and sake like it’s gettin’ hot in here.”
Even though the restaurant has been around for 23 years, Koeda said he’s never seen a sensation like this. “I don’t think any city across the US has seen something like this,” Koeda said.
