Travel to the Texas frontier with your library

Travel to the Texas frontier with your library
Deborah Tarsiewicz
Frontier Texas! is a museum that celebrates the Texas Frontier located just a short 10 minute walk from the Abilene Public Library Main location. You’ll want to check it out this summer in particular as the library’s own Tony Redman will take part in special live reenactments this summer in the Frontier Texas! courtyard.
A short drama will bring to life the shootout at the Cattlemen’s Exchange. Free, and open to the public, shows begin Saturday, May 29 at noon and continues every Saturday thereafter (except June 12) until July 10. For more information, head to the website abilenevisitors.com/Historic-Saturday-Shootouts.

Ambushed on the Pecos - True West Magazine

The Courageous Life and Death of Oliver Loving
In 1867, beneath a bluff a few miles from Carlsbad, New Mexico, two Texas cattlemen—one of them a trail-hardened 52-year-old, the other a 23-year-old roughneck—were fighting for their lives, surrounded by a marauding party of Comanches. If recorded at all, such an event would have been no more than a blip on the historical calendar of the American West, but this one—and its aftermath—turned out to be one of the most amazing examples of courage, loyalty and sheer grit in all the annals of the frontier.

Please explore responsibly. While "SoCal Wanderer" continues to uncover the region’s local gems and not-to-miss destinations, these are uncertain times with public health guidelines changing constantly. We encourage our readers to stay curious and cautious.
One of the lesser-known desert jewels of Southern California is located in East San Diego County, smack dab in the middle of the Colorado Desert — Anza-Borrego.
While the Anza-Borrego Desert Region extends all the way to the Imperial Valley and even down to the Mexican border, its best-defined boundaries are within Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
Formerly known as "Borego Palms Desert State Park" (with the misspelling of the Spanish word "borrego," meaning lamb) and simply Anza Desert State Park in the 1930s, it's not only California's first desert park, it's also our largest state park!

"Ride Slow, Take Photos" - 1200 Miles on a bicycle with a Speed Graphic - By Erik Mathy

“Ride Slow, Take Photos” – 1200 Miles on a bicycle with a Speed Graphic – By Erik MathyJanuary 2, 2021
On November 1st, 2018 I left my garage and rolled out on the old Butterfield Overland Mail Route for Tucson, AZ which was a full 1200 miles away. For almost a year prior the headlines had been dominated by news of things happening along America’s southern border. Child Separations. Immigration Caravans. National Guard deployments. On social media channels the rhetoric from all sides, which had already been getting increasingly strident, ramped up to a fever pitch. Every day pleasant people were vehemently arguing. Normal conversations spiraled completely out of control.

The Battle Of Pinos Altos While Mangas and his Membreno’s were terrorizing the Pinos Altos area, Cochise was busy raiding along the Santa Cruz River where he killed 150 Americans.
Mangas Colorados, the great chief of the Membreno Apache, had been friendly with the Americans since 1846 when he offered to join them in their war with Mexico. But since the humiliating whipping given him by the miners at Pinos Altos and the betrayal of his son-in-law Cochise by the Army at Apache Pass in early 1861, he had declared war on the miners and settlers. He and Cochise had effectively closed the road between Mesilla and Tucson.
