Editorial — A tradition returns: County fairs have made a comeback in north country this year

County fairs bring people together to celebrate what is distinct about life in rural America.
A staple at every county fair is the display of livestock. Contests are held to reward farmers for the care they take in raising and presenting their animals.
Amusement rides, food and beverage vendors, and musical acts also are very popular. In addition, some county fairs feature other events such as demolition derbies to keep crowds entertained.
The county fair season is upon us in Northern New York, and weâre thrilled about this. All the fairs had to be canceled last year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Jefferson County Fair sees high visitor turnout amid heat, threats of storms for opening day

WATERTOWN â Braving the heat and threat of storms to come, visitors Tuesday were able to enjoy in-person rides, food and entertainment at the Jefferson County Fair for the first time since 2019.
Touted as the longest continuously operating fair in the United States, it made its triumphant return to the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds on Tuesday for its 204th continuous year, which it is able to say thanks to the fact that the fair hosted a virtual event last year.
The fair, canceled last year at the hands of COVID-19, runs through Sunday. New this year are featured performances from The Flying Wallendas Family Circus, who will be doing two shows a day, and three on Friday and Saturday.

Jefferson County Fair returns Tuesday following 2020 COVID-19 cancellation

WATERTOWN â The Jefferson County Fair, touted as the longest continuously operating fair in the United States, returns to the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds on Tuesday through Sunday following the eventâs cancellation at the hands of COVID-19 in 2020.
New this year are featured performances from The Flying Wallendas Family Circus, who will be doing two shows a day, and three on Friday and Saturday. Robert D. Simpson, president of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society, the organization that runs the fair, said there was originally concern that the fair might not get as many animals or exhibits, but there will be a normal fair as far as that is concerned.

A native of Chattanooga, Chee Chee knew that she wanted to have a decent job in a field she knows she is passionate about and loves. She was born and raised in Spencer J. McCallie Homes, known as “Alton Park Projects”, a place that she has great memories of and always says she will move back to! Most kids grew up in the project without both parents in the household but both of her parents still live together and Chee Chee is thankful and grateful to God she has both of her parents.Chee Chee loves music, roller skating and dancing. When she was small she would go in her twin brother’s bedroom, sit on their bed and listen to all the different types of music they had. When they would leave the house to go out she would play their stereo system and dance! She knew that one day she would wind up at a radio station; she just didn’t know which one.Chee Chee is the Mother of 3 Kids and 7 grandkids. She loves her family dearly and believes strongly in the importance of the family. She attended Howard High School (the school she loves!), worked at Memorial Hospital, and attended Chattanooga State Community College. She then went on to Olan Mills, WDEF-TV 12, and WFLI/TV before joining her second family at Brewer Media Group.Chee Chee started at Brewer Media in 1991 and has since worked in several positions. She is currently an Account Executive and Co-Host of Donut & Friends Show on Saturdays. Chee Chee says,

Robert I. Mesa, who made his debut on “Grey’s Anatomy” in the third episode of this season, playing intern James Chee, has been bumped up to be a recurring cast member on the ABC medical drama. Chee is the first indigenous doctor on “Grey’s Anatomy” in its 17 seasons, and he will next appear in the episode airing on April 15.
Chee was introduced as part of the new class of interns at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, who are embarking on their careers as doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic. In his first episode, Chee was hazed by neurosurgeon Tom Koracick (Greg Germann), and forced to do data entry — only to discover that the reason it wasn’t working was that all of the patients had died of COVID. He will be featured in several more episodes this season.
