The Year That Broke Emmanuel Macron's Republican Front

The Year That Broke Emmanuel Macron’s Republican Front
The French president is facing a far right that has gained the upper hand in the country’s insidious culture wars. And he has only himself to blame.

political and media life into overdrive. It took the form of an open letter,

Will France Stand Up to Critical Race Theory and Post-Colonialism?

Douglas Blair is a contributor to the Daily Signal and a graduate of Heritage's Young Leaders Program.
“You start out giving your hat, then you give your coat, then your shirt, then your skin and finally your soul.” So said famed French President and World War II hero Charles de Gaulle on the costs of dealing with the Soviet Union.
In de Gaulle’s time, many were content to let the Soviets be and to coexist with what President Ronald Reagan coined “the evil empire.” De Gaulle rightfully distrusted the USSR and fought tooth and nail to keep Soviet influence out of the French Republic.

What talk of a military coup actually means for France

On April 21, 1961, a group of retired generals and serving officers mounted a failed coup against president de Gaulle.
As recently as the spring of 1988, a handful of generals published a letter in the conservative daily
Le Figaro protesting that France would be “in danger” if it re-elected the socialist president François Mitterrand.
The 1988 letter was, purportedly, about cuts in defence spending. The recent “generals’ letter” was quite different in tone and language: the kind of stuff that one can read in a constellation of far right and racist web-sites and pseudo news-sites in France known as the
“Fachosph
re”.

France on brink of 'civil war' thanks to Macron 'surrendering' to Islamic extremists, THOUSANDS of soldiers warn

France on brink of ‘civil war’ thanks to Macron ‘surrendering’ to Islamic extremists, THOUSANDS of soldiers warn
THOUSANDS of serving French soldiers have signed a letter accusing Emmanuel Macron of surrendering to Islamists.
The warning published in right-wing magazine Valeurs Actuelles, claims France is on the brink of civil war as a result of the President's failure to tackle the extremists.

The move follows that of 20 retired generals in the same publication, who also claimed "civil war" would erupt without firm action.
The authors described themselves as soldiers from the younger generation of the military, a so-called "generation of fire" that had seen active service.

Macron sent another chilling warning from soldiers after earlier letter calling for military action

A group of serving French soldiers have published a new open letter warning Emmanuel Macron that the 'survival' of France is at stake after the President made 'concessions' to Islamism.
The letter published in the right-wing magazine Valeurs Actuelles (Today's Values) late on Sunday echoes the tone of a similar letter printed in the same magazine last month which also warned a civil war was brewing and called for military action against 'Islamists'.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, a close ally of Macron, slammed the letter as a 'crude maneouvre' and accused its anonymous signatories of lacking 'courage'.
The previous letter, signed by 1,000 people including serving officers and some 20 semi-retired generals, warned of the 'disintegration' of France because of radical Islamic 'hordes' living in the suburbs.

Deby's Death, Chad's Crisis, and the Ghosts of Libyan Fiascoes Past

Joe Biden uttered the word "Africa" exactly once in his first address
to a joint session of congress, marking the vaunted presidential cliché
of his first "100 Days" in office. It was a tangential reference,
but its context, implications – and what Biden
didn’t say – were somewhat
instructive:
After 20 years of American valor and sacrifice, it’s time to bring our troops
home…But make no mistake – the terrorist threat has evolved beyond Afghanistan
since 2001 and we will remain vigilant against threats to the United States,
wherever they come from. Al Qaeda and ISIS are in Yemen, Syria, Somalia, and

Fears of a coup in France are exaggerated, but a far-right president is a real possibility

Fears of a coup in France are exaggerated, but a far-right president is a real possibility

A recent open letter to French president, Emmanuel Macron, signed by almost 50 retired army generals so far and more than 24,000 (predominantly former) servicemen, was occasion for many on the French left to raise the alarm, believing a coup d’état was either in the making or a future possibility. The top-brass signatories, led by generals Antoine Martinez and Christian Piquemal, say the country is on the verge of collapse because of immigration and crime, as well as Islamism and the support it gets from some on the left. They are angry at “cancel culture” and at any intellectual attempt to criticise the country’s colonial past. These generals warn that if the situation worsens, their fellow soldiers on active duty may choose to intervene and take control.
