that that's barack obama speaking to college audiences and mitt romney speaking to college as. any time the president does something, they're going to talk about it or do it, it's this sort of i know you are but what am i situation. and so the president was hitting the campaign trail and talking to college audiences and so mitt romney was. but it illustrated something which is, a, there's a huge age gape in terms of where young voters have their allegiance. in 2008, he won 60% of the use vote. and there's been very interestingly, there's been a big drop off in enthusiasm in recent polling.
the peace corps. in the fall of 1951, a young u.s. congressman went on "meet the press" and told about a recent trip he had made overseas. he told with dismay how disappointed he was with people representing america in the foreign services. he said he talked to college audiences and found lots of young people who would love to go out in the world and represent the united states. especially in third world countries. he said he wanted well-rounded young men and women like them out there. a better picture of america presented in the world. nine years later, and the last week of the presidential campaign, that same man, john f. kennedy, spoke to his war wbudd, red fay about how things were going. he was worried about how the campaign was ending. he saw president eisenhower jumping in on behalf of vice president nixon, and saw the polls heading nixon's way. then he turned to a happier subject. he told his war buddy red fay which whom he shared the dangers of the pacific about the speech he was about to give in san francisco that night about something he hoped would prevent more wars.
white house. >> now it is. >> who do they see as more -- as a group that is more likely to be mobilized to get out the vote, to be enthusiastic for november? is it young people that you would have in college audiences like tonight? young voters who don't usually turn out in great numbers for midterm elections? or are they likely to get more distance out of trying to motivate their actual base, the traditional democratic base including union members, liberals, and that sort of thing? >> you're right that historically the youth vote doesn't really come out in midterm elections but presidential elections. obama's 2008 campaign was the exception to the rule. and this is the first midterm election in the age of social media. and i say that facebook, twitter, all these tools are there for politicians to really take advantage of. and obama was able to do that in 2008. the problem is that he hasn't engaged the same people in the way that would be productive for 2010. and it remains to be seen
