Things to Do for Free in Denver This Week, March 1-7, 2021

16th and Arapahoe streets
Haven't been downtown late? Here's a good reason to visit.  Denver Night Lights debuted before the pandemic hit, but it continues to invite artists to create illuminating works that light up the Clocktower on the 16th Street Mall Tuesdays through Sundays after sunset. The March lineup, which is devoted to the Month of Photography, has the theme "Reimagining Hope," and the work on display was created by members of Indigenous Photograph, a global community of visual storytellers who come from a diverse range of Indigenous communities across six continents. It debuted on March 2; find out more here.

The Mercury Cafe has been a longtime safe haven for Denver’s arts, music, literary and comedy scenes. As with so many places during the pandemic, though, it’s hit tough times. So composer and DeVotchKa multiinstrumentalist Tom Hagerman and magician Professor Phelyx have recruited a crew of local musicians, poets, comedians and more to send in Valentine’s Day video messages for a livestreamed fundraiser called A Valentine for the Mercury. Phelyx will host; Hagerman and the Grande Orquesta Navarre will play, and big names like Lumineers member Wesley Schultz, Nathaniel Rateliff, Adam Cayton-Holland, Andrea Gibson and Josh Blue will perform. For more information about how to watch and donate, go to the Mercury Cafe’s website.

Denver City Council Will Vote on Group-Living Zoning Overhaul, and Readers Have Suggestions

On February 8, Denver City Council will vote on a major update to the group-living portions of the Denver Zoning Code. Among other things, the proposal would allow up to five unrelated adults to live in a household — right now, that number is capped at two — and open more areas of the city to residential facilities, including halfway houses and sober-living homes.
The plan has been in the works for three years, and as Conor McCormack-Cavanagh reported this week, the fight will go down to the wire, with Safe and Sound Denver fighting the proposal while a slim majority of councilmembers appear to favor it.

Casa Bonita Leads the Pack of Denver Spots Hibernating During the Pandemic

Casa Bonita isn’t the only landmark restaurant that has yet to reopen in metro Denver. But while some owners have definitely given up the ghost, others, like Casa Bonita's Robert Wheaton, promise that they'll be back.
While all five restaurants owned by Mountain Sun — Mountain Sun, Southern Sun and Under the Sun, all in Boulder, along with the Vine Street Pub in Denver and Longs Peak Pub in Longmont — are closed, and will remain so for the foreseeable future, until the vaccine allows bars and restaurants to operate with fewer restrictions, their owners promise to return. “We’ll be back,” Mountain Sun co-owner Kevin Daly told Jonathan Shikes. “All five locations will be back, and we can’t wait to have a Stout Month when people can kiss and hug and make out and have a beer at the bar with their friends.”

Denver Didn't Get Its Own Trump Tower, But It Does Have a Trump Plaza

Denver never did get its Trump Tower.
Back in 2006, Donald Trump — the New York developer then best known for his yellow pompadour and starring role on
The Apprentice — had just seen his $1 billion bid to redevelop Union Station shot down (his team’s six-paragraph proposal was considered “non-responsive” to the application requirements), but he didn’t give up on the Mile High City. Instead, Trump came back with a plan to construct the tallest building in town, one filled with a luxury hotel and condos, right at the corner of 18th Avenue and Sherman Street.
To make that plan concrete, he put the circa 1906 El Jebel Temple at 1770 Sherman and its three adjacent parking lots under contract for $22 million, and hired Denver architect David Tryba to design a sixty-or-so-story tower that would “complement and be a juxtaposition to the historic El Jebel building,” Tryba told the

Denver Diner Fans Pour Out Memories of This 24/7 Landmark

The lights have gone out at the Denver Diner. The family that ran this spot at 740 West Colfax Avenue made the tough decision not to reopen the 24/7 cafe that George Skordos started over thirty years ago, but say they will reopen in another location...some day.
"It was a place you could trust to have good food no matter the time. It was a place where if you had a terrible night...we could turn your night around," recalls Konstantine Skordos, who started working at the diner as a teen and was the general manager when it closed. "I’ll never forget the place, and I’ll make sure nobody else does, either. We may be gone for now, but not forever. We will be back, Denver, better than ever."

The Denver Diner Closes Its Doors on Colfax

It's lights out for the Denver Diner. After holding down the southeast corner of Speer Boulevard and West Colfax Avenue for the past thirty years, this classic cafe has called it quits...at least at its current location.
Long a haven for night owls as well as those looking for a spot for a casual morning meeting, quick lunch or comfort-food dinner, the iconic 24/7 eatery closed along with the rest of Colorado's restaurants on March 17, and didn't return until June 1, under tight restrictions on both capacity and hours — no more late-night meals after let-out, not that the bars were open late. Then on November 20, when Denver moved under Level Red guidelines that again prohibited indoor dining, the Denver Diner opted not to stay open just for patio service (it didn't have one, for starters) and to-go options.
