Could Santa Ana Join the Community Choice Energy Movement in Orange County?Voice of OC

.
A number of Orange County cities have moved to change the way they get their energy, which officials say will save local residents a little money and help combat climate change.
The cities of Buena Park, Fullerton, Huntington Beach and Irvine, which started the effort, are already in. The cities have formed a new public agency where they’ll buy and sell their own energy and invest in renewable energy sources while slightly lowering people’s utility bills.
Some are now looking to officials in Santa Ana — one of the densest cities in the county and the U.S. — to possibly join next and exit the current investor-owned power company servicing the region, Southern California Edison.

Ongoing coronavirus outbreaks in Orange County have ballooned to 17 homeless shelters – with 417 homeless people and dozens of staff infected in total and one death so far – Orange County officials are acknowledging publicly for the first time, in response to questions from Voice of OC.
The ongoing outbreaks are prompting calls from activists for the county to reinstate a program that sheltered at-risk homeless seniors in motels, now that federal officials are agreeing to cover 100 percent of the costs.

Forty-five years later in the middle of a pandemic, Black History Month returns with the activism of the Black Lives Matter movement and a newfound urgency for social change.

OC Sheriff Investigating Whether Employee Took Part in U.S. Capitol RiotVoice of OC

.
Orange County sheriff officials are investigating whether an off-duty employee was at the U.S. Capitol riot in Washington, D.C. earlier this month.
The employee – who has not been identified publicly – is cooperating with the probe, according to a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
“The Department is investigating the employee’s possible attendance and if so, participation,” said Carrie Braun, the department’s spokeswoman, in response to questions from Voice of OC.
“We received one report [of] an OCSD employee who may have been present at the rally in DC,” Braun said. As of Tuesday morning, she said it was unclear if the employee was at the Capitol during the riot, or if they went to the rally but did not go to the Capitol.

'To Know Better' Campaign Competition Announces Its WinnersVoice of OC

.
The Orange County Human Relations Commission organized the “To Know Better” 2020 campaign competition to challenge middle school and high school students across five districts to creatively design a campaign that promotes cultural acceptance while rejecting hateful behavior, specifically COVID-related discrimination and xenophobia. The winners were announced last week.
“We want it to really be about making sure that people understand that there’s no room for hate right now,” said Alison Edwards, CEO of OC Human Relations Council. “We’re all in this pandemic, in this crisis, and hate should not be part of treating this pandemic.”
Starting in October, the contest received 105 multimedia entries across 29 Orange County schools, which were focused on the theme of the “To Know Better” campaign, inspiring youth to rise above racism.

Citing the current surge in COVID-19 cases, Northside Independent School District Superintendent Brian Woods urged parents Wednesday to keep their elementary and middle school kids home and in virtual learning for the next two weeks.
“Hopefully this will get us past the surge in cases we are now seeing in our city,” Woods said in a video posted on the Northside ISD website and social media accounts.
“To be clear, this is a request. It is not mandatory and we are not closing Northside schools,” he added.

That notion will soon get vetted here in Orange County – a place with a strong Trump following – as local Democrats and Republicans over the next two Monday nights take up membership votes for their leadership officers. A special election for an open seat on the Orange County board of supervisors is also now underway and ends in March.
