welcome to both of you this morning. welcome to the show. >> thank you. clayton: michael, why is the former president being so quiet on all of this. >> i think he doesn't want to build the story. he is hoping it will go away. and if he weighs in, it will just pump it up more. i think it's not going to go await a minute david, you heard the reporting yesterday from our own adam housley this could go very high in the former obama administration. what do you say to that? >> you know, if there was leaking about trump officials who were engaging in talks with russian officials, and that leaking was classified and should not have been leaked, then we should investigate that. but we need to also draw distinction between unmasks and leaking. unmasking, when an american official is talking to a russian agent, as flynn was, he was talking to the russian ambassador about sensitive issues, like u.s. sanctions against russia, that unmasking is supposed to happen. in fact, our intelligence officials need to understand those conversations. that's what happened here.
we now know that flynn engaged in improper conversations. he has admitted to that in fact, he had to resign as the national security advisor because of that. now, that's something that the american people should be really concerned about. we need to be concerned about russian interference in our election. that goes to the sanctity of our democracy. clayton: okay, michael. >> rule of law let this investigation go forward. clayton: all right, what about led that unmasking. do you take david's argument? >> no. i dealt with this material when i was a senior director in the national security council in the bush administration. and we took unmasking very seriously. there's a process. have you to justify to the nsa why you want to unmask it and then once you know that information, it should be very tightly held. it's something that you don't, most of 78 time you don't have to find out who the individual is in order to understand the significance of the report.
so i totally reject that argument. clayton: david? >> i can't believe he doesn't think that significant that our national security advisor in waiting was talking to russia about u.s. sanctions against russia and telling russia that don't worry about those sanctions, as soon as we get in office we are going to remove those sanctions. russia does not have the u.s. interests in its heart. it is going against u.s. interests. it is -- to have incursion in eastern ukraine invaded the sorchts of ukraine. those are the things that u.s. and allies in europe are very worried about. the national security advisor in waiting was talking to russia about that. those are the types of sensitive conversations that are exactly the type of conversations that need to be unmasked. we now know that flynn had to step down because of it. and there may have been criminal wrongdoing and that's why he is being investigated and that's why we saw the news this week that he is asking for immunity. clayton: all right, david. what about that point?
