friends, and my community, than i am disappointed by the outcome. special counsel, david weiss made a rare statement defending the case ultimately, this case was not just about addiction, a disease that haunts families across the united states, including hunter biden s this case was about the illegal choices defendant made while in the throes of addiction this conviction comes to the possibility of a decades in prison, hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. but that is the upper range of sentencing possibilities. it s widely expected here that hunter biden would face something far less. one of the jurors that we spoke with today said he doesn t believe that hunter biden should go to jail at all but the decision ultimately rests with the judge and we ll find out what she decides. we say that president biden is handling this emotionally and with his family i m late in-person, although the biden family has in the past sought privacy during events related to hunter s legal battles. but today, choosing a very republic show of support at the delaware air national guard, where you saw president biden hugging hunter, hugging his wife, melissa biden, and giving a kiss on the head to bone let s his toddler son to hunter and waleses toddler son, beau before hunter greeted the secret service members and many white house staff members before getting into his his own car. and leaving there. now as for what happens next, president biden has already been asked about the powers of clemency that he possesses as president and whether he would seek a pardon for his son he has said had no here s how that response came in will you accept the jury s outcome, their verdict no matter what it is? yes. and have you ruled pulled out a pardon for your son? yes. you have he was not asked about a potential commutation of a potential sentence, but the sentencing is currently expected to take place in the weeks before the election. wealth. kayla tausche at the white house for us, kayla, thank you. i want to dig deeper right now with our legal and political experts of course, khardori or former federal prosecutor, i ll start with you. what do you make of this fascinate the fascinating information we ve learned at least so far from jurors about how they reached this guilty verdict. well, it may think it s a testament to their honesty that the president s status as our commander-in-chief apparently did not weigh into there deliberations in any serious way. i do share the view of one of the jurors who described this as a potential waste of taxpayer money but nevertheless, that juror voted to convict hunter biden, understanding evidently that it s not that person s decision to decide whether or not the case should have been brought, but it was brought the judge the evidence and reach the conclusion that i think was largely unavoidable. jamal, let me get your thoughts and your mouth. simmons is with us. hunter biden, of course, is not a candidate. he s just the president s son. so what do you think the actual political impact of this conviction could be? i don t think there s going to be that great, but political impact, most people are not going to be swayed by this because most people have had some experience with their lives as the tragedy of addiction and gone down the road of what happens if people in their families who are addicted. so on one hand, you ve got the president signs and who is an addict? two substances on the other hand, you ve got a former president who has been convicted of 34 counts of hiding hush money payments to as pornstar mistress to keep her from going public during the midst of a presidential campaign. they re not the same thing. i think most voters know that alyssa farah griffin is also with us. alyssa, i want you in our viewers to listen to the house speaker mike johnson s reaction earlier today to this verdict. listen to this mr. speaker, you ve been saying two-tiered system of justice for some time. here s the president sayyed being convicted on three counts as that undercut your client it doesn t every case is different and clearly the evidence is overwhelming here. i don t think that s the case and the trump trials and all the charges that have and brought against couldn t have been obviously brought for political purposes. a hunter biden is a separate instance does this verdict elicit take the steam out of the republicans baseless claims about the weaponization of the us justice department of course, while it absolutely undercut said just taking a step back, we re in uncharted territory here were the same department of justice that indicted donald trump in the mar-a-lago documents case. and in the january 6 case, also just convicted the sitting president, son of a crime through a jury this is anything underscores that our justice system works without fear or favor despite the imperfections of it, it is something that works to be objective and i think it dramatically undermines this claim that it s a weaponized system. if you re an undecided voter, who d wasn t really sure what to make of the trump conviction. you her on the one side, on the right, that this was a weapon and on the left that no. a jury of his peers found him guilty. you re seeing this and i think you re saying, oh, wait, the system does seem to work regardless of who s who the name of the person that is on trial on kirsha, you were in the courtroom. my for much of this trial, hunters, sentencing, as we know, will likely take place in the fall before the election how much time, if any, is he realistically, realistically looking at? and does he have a chance on appeal? look, i would think he would be looking realistically at potentially months in prison if the prosecutors decide to seek a prison term and the judge is seriously considering it that would be consistent with sort of a first-time offender in this space. i m sure he will be arguing for a probation and he would have a good claim to probation given his history in and the uniqueness of this prosecution. but i think at the sort of the extreme he would looking at months, not not multiple years in terms of its appeal prospects. look, i do think he has a colorable appeal here based on his argument that the second amendment basically renders this prosecution unconstitutional and a prohibition it s not generally speaking, then as applied to him, unconstitutional. i have no idea how that issue will be resolved, but the supreme court has issued some very pro-gun rulings in this area. and if you were to follow the logic of the bruin decision to a t, there is a pretty good argument here that the laws under which biden was convicted are also unconstitutional as applied to him under the second amendment two, very interesting jamal or the timing of the verdict and eight, created a rather bizarre optics situation with the president biden delivering a previously scheduled speech, speech about gun safety. what just hours after his son was convicted on felony gun charges? the white house also later canceled the daily press briefing. is this a bad look for the administration? what do you think it s a bad day for the administration, but more importantly, it s a bad day for the president and for his son, but it s a bad day in a personal way, not really one about the administration and its policies. the president s policies aren t guns had been clear for a long time. he passed the assault weapons ban. but i just wanna go back to something we were at a minute ago with alyssa can you imagine a world where obama prosecutor, when after don junior, ivanka trump, while barak, while while donald trump was president he allowed that prosecutor to go after them, indict them, see them commit, can see them convicted, and then said he would not he would not pardon them. i can t imagine that world we all know. that s probably not the case. donald trump would i think we just lost, we just lost. that has a commitment to the rule of law that we just have never seen before. guard jamal standby, alyssa, the trump campaign statement reads in part, and i m quoting now, we read it this trial has been nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the biden crime family. is this verdict something the trump campaign can seize on politically? what do you think? so i actually see this totally different than jamal does. i actually think this could be a boon for biden. it s certainly doesn t help trump. and i think this sort of this statement afterwards spoke to the fact that if anything, it proves this point that the system is not weaponized, that donald trump s own conviction was legitimate 52% of americans approve of the conviction as many is 16% approve of the trump conviction so when you start dealing in those realities, electorally, knowing donald trump s name is on the ballot, not hunter biden s. i think they re realizing that this might undercut his biggest vulnerability, which federal law but also florida state law for a convicted felon now, let s set that aside for a minute authority say this is a complicated defendant he lives a complicated existence. he doesn t carry weapons, he s guarded by secret service but this is a detail that they want to resolve and make sure that that gun is accounted for all right. good reporting. thanks very much, john, for that report. let s discuss this and get some analysis from former federal prosecutor, at least adamson and cnn senior law enforcement analyst, charles ramsey alise, could trump s admission that he still holding onto this gun impact potentially his sentencing. it s coming up. what july 11, how soon does he have to turn this gun? well, that s a good question. well, if i think technically he should have already turned this gun in as was just reported donald trump was convicted of a felony. and so at this time, he would be considered a felon in possession of the firearm. now, new york has a very clear road map to how defendant needs to surrender their firearms post-conviction, it s a little bit different when we re talking about federally or other jurisdictions, when the conviction happened elsewhere however the by the letter of the law, once he is convicted, he can no longer be in possession. so it is odd to me at todd blanche would have sat there as he made this admission and not thought of this before the interview, we need more information when he says it s in florida, is it it is house. did he surrender it? where is it but assuming argue window, it s in mar-a-lago. that s a potential problem now, directly to your question as to whether or not it will impact sentencing. again, it s the facts and circumstances is the former president holding onto the firearm and just refusing to relinquish it. i think that would be a data point. the judge were merchan will take into consideration. but is this really just a case of figuring out how to surrender it or is he in the process of transferring ownership? all of those details will matter. come sentencing de chief ramsey, as you know, in new york officials said this information will be passed along to florida police to quote, and i m quoting now, take whatever steps are necessary if trump doesn t voluntarily return his gun what authorities do you believe have to step in well, you know, i think not at this has come to light that they ll work toward getting that gun. he s not supposed to be in possession of the gun. he is a convicted felon. but this is a situation where, you know, he s really living in two different places. i mean, he spends a lot of time in new york also in florida. the one gun is in florida now he had two others that he surrendered last year shortly after he was indicted so he s already given up two of the guns. this is the one that s outstanding i really find it hard to believe that they would not make every effort to try to turn that in as soon as possible, or leases trump potentially at risk of being criminally charged for illegally possessing a firearm yeah. so i don t think he is now, again technically, could they charged him perhaps if the circumstances are correct, if it is in mar-a-lago, if it is within his constructive possession, then yes. it s a very serious charge. they could charge him federally i just looked into it prior prior to speaking with you, it carries a term of a potential ten years in prison of slightly old statistic, but from 2021, the united states sentencing commission said 96.9% of defendants charged with that crime. were, were sentenced to prison. so very, very serious, risky, which is why i don t know why todd blanche would have not made sure that the gun was surrendered to authorities prior to the psi, but very unlikely because he s still in between the conviction and sentencing. and there isn t a clear legal requirement of when and how he surrenders the gun in florida. chief ramsey, your the former police chief here in washington, dc. former police commissioner in philadelphia, is trump getting more leeway, right now or is it standard for convicted felons to take time? to return their guns well, is that standard for convicted felons to take time to turn in a gun i m not aware of that occurring with any degree of frequency, but i do think that they will make some allowances to give him an opportunity to turn to gun in i d be surprised if that doesn t happen now, he is guarded as john miller said, by secret service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, he has a nice guy. he s got, but earth of his life, he ll have that kind of protection. and so there s a lot going on. this is unprecedented. we ve never had a homer president convicted of anything and so now this is just one of those things. it s very serious. i m not trying to make light of it, but i would doubt very seriously if this is going to be something that s going to go beyond a day or two before that gun is located, turned in chief ramsey. thanks very not. and it s not our job to do that job, the decide cases, especially and so far no comment on these secret recordings from the supreme court or from the job justices are from justice alito s wife. now the supreme court historical society, they hosted this dinner where the recordings were made. this is a yearly event and it s held inside in the court building. were members of the society are allowed to buy tickets for themselves. and one guest. and then of course, the gathering provides members this rare access to the justices as we saw in these secret recordings, wolf, it ll be interesting to see if any of their rules change after this secret recording. yes, it will. let s see if that happens. jessica schneider. thank you very much. i want to discuss this with our cnn legal analyst, steve vladeck. he s a professor at the university texas school of law. steve, do you see these comments from justice alito specifically as inappropriate? and is it reasonable to question his impartiality wolfe, i think what i m struck by in those recordings is the contrast between justice alito who, you know, for better, for worse, took the bait and who had no problem expressing views on subjects that you probably shouldn t have versus what we heard from chief justice roberts, which is basically what they teach in judge school, ought to be the answer when judges are asked to weigh in on contemporary political debates so i think justice alito is remarks are probably right up, if not over the line, wolf, the problem is putting them in context where this is not a one-off, where we re seeing so many examples of justice alito saying things like this in public suggested that he has very strong political views now he s having a hard time checking those at the door. well, if i think it s the aggregation of all of these public statements by justice alito. that s really the source of the cause for concern. because you know steve, this is the second controversy involving a martha-ann alito ginni thomas, also has faced questions about her political activities. so how does that impact perceptions of the us supreme court? yeah. i mean, i think there s no question that it has some bearing on public perception of the court. i mean, we really ought not to be judged by the actions of our spouses that certainly my wife s position about me but i do think it s worth stressing that the real question here is not can justice x participate in case why? the real question is, are the justices behaving in a way that is enhanced in public faith in the integrity of the court as an institution or not. and so for as much as justice alito has tried to suggest that the entire flag controversy are basically his wife s fault. i think his responses have not suggested that he is especially concerned about the message that the flag sent. his responses at the supreme court historical society suggest that he s not particularly concerned about being publicly associated with deeply, intensely divisive political comments and so wolfe, i think again, the question is whether if you look at this as a whole, there s reason to worry, not about individual justices in individual cases, but about whether there are justices on the supreme court who really do cede part of their job as picking a side and who are caring about when winning versus what we heard from chief justice this is robert, which is their job is to basically toe the line politically and decide the cases before them. we don t expect the justices to be saints, but we do expect them to at least appear publicly as if they are completely uninvestigated. and i think that s the concern that all of this behavior by justice alito by justice thomas, by their spouses is really brings us back to steve juror number ten. he s man in his stuff, these terms his from southern the southern part of delaware. and one of the things that we heard from the defense team as we were going through this trial was they believed that politics had a role in why hunter biden was even facing these charges. he said the defense team believe that the us attorney who was appointed by donald trump was essentially bullied into going after hunter because of criticism from house republicans and republicans in general. i asked the juror number ten, who did not want to be to show his face on television, whether their politics played any role in these deliberations. listen to what he had to say if anybody, was in that courtroom or in the jury room, they would know it was not motivated by politics politics played no part whatsoever in my mind no. i can t speak for the other jurors but nothing was nothing was ever said about this election year that was never brought up and aaron, we also he also told me that that the gun form that hunter biden signed back in october of 2018 when he bought the firearm that was the crucial piece of evidence in his mind and he believe that hunter biden lied when he signed it, and none of the other evidence from the from the from the defense to try to explain it away, really worked on the part of the jury one of the things that may come up by the defense team, they do they are weighing an appeal of this of this verdict is the fact that jurors never got to see a second oppression at that form, because the judge did not allow it. and so i asked the juror whether he believed that that would have made a difference. he said it would not have aaron sheep all right. i evan, thank you very much. outside that courthouse and having a chance to speak to turn number ten, which was obviously so fast thing is we d we d heard about the jury and their reactions and who they are all right. i m a panel with me now, katie rogers, i want to start with you because you have covered the biden family closely for a long time at the new york times and now we re seeing the president arrive in delaware, greeting his son. what are your sources telling you about how this has impacted president biden personally? well, i think everyone who has spoken to me who is close to the president and close to the bidens. they always really reiterate to me how much the president believes in his sons ability to stay sober. he s very proud on that level of his son and they always stressed to me that, yes, he is worried about the legal problems ahead for hunter biden, but he believes in his son s ability to continue his recovery. now, that said, the people close to him say that this is the thing that more than anything else he wakes up. if he s briefed by aids on gaza, the next immediate get thing is about his son or he is constantly in contact with his son. they speak at least once a day. so this is something that is going to add more weight to the president s mindset. he s already been quite worried about these legal problems, never having an end for his son. and this just adds to that, right? it didn t certainly at a crucial time in this case campaign. congressman buck, i wanted to play something else for you that juror number ten shared with evan perez about hunter biden. let me play it i did have empathy for him, for his addiction i don t wish that on anybody and especially correct. okay. let me let was the has to be a terrible dickson it comes from i think just significant that that juror says that after they unanimously convicted him on all counts. right. but still able to have that human empathy and obviously a lot of americans can relate to that who are dealing with this themselves or with others and their families, some sort sort of addiction the president though is to deal with the political side of this. do you think that he has managed this? appropriately as a father and as a president congressman yeah, i do. i think it s very difficult. you look at your son having an addiction like bad. the federal government, the congress obviously passed this law because folks who are addicted to drugs and buy guns are more likely to commit crimes. so certainly not a hunter biden category necessarily, but i think the joe biden president biden has done a great job of trying to stay above the fray and recognizing that his department of justice was a very difficult position attorney general merrick garland appointed a special counsel s so that that council would be independent and render independent judgment. and i think that people look at this case and recognize that it was done in an independent and fair way the idea that there may have been other crimes are really irrelevant. this this defendant totter biden, got a fair trial, a quick jury verdict, and i think that joe biden made the right statements after the verdict ryan, the thing is this this is not done for hunter biden or for joe biden, the whole family, right? he can still appeal just even on this case, i m i m talking separately from the tax case, which is very serious. but on this case alone, is this going to drag out for the remainder of election between sentencing appeals and all kinds of this process 100% because he s going to both appeal on the grounds that certain evidence should not have been excluded from the defense. and he s going to appeal on the grounds that under the second amendment, the constitution, that this particular criminal provision should be invalid and none of that is going to be sewed up before november. in fact, we ll probably at least a year from now before any of that gets stored up, even conservatively speaking, well, even conservatively speaking. all right, so that s a long time, katie, and it s certainly shows in terms of weighing on the president all the way through the election way beyond, but through the election i mentioned how joe biden, the first lady, was not able to get there in time today because happened so quickly. she wasn t actually able to be in the courtroom for the verdict but she was there almost every day. hunter sister was there is on its uncle a lot of other family members, his daughter testified ex girlfriends wives and we ve seen support from almost all of them on hunter and he s recovery. it has been something that clearly has damaged and hurt this family for a long time. they ve struggled with it what does the conviction mean, katie, for the whole family? i mean i think that this family has dealt a hunter biden has detailed his addictions over the years in various ways, whether it s through a memoir, through a lengthy magazine profile. but for the rest of this family, it s been a really long private, painful battle as we saw, this week during and last week during the trial. sorry these members of the biden family, onetime members of the biden family in current members recounted what was essentially they had all described as a held that they were in with him and a conviction is really the first time this very private battle has been laid bare for public consumption. so it s uncomfortable for them and they have had to sit there and here the shrapnel hit them yet again of hunter biden s choices have had to sit there and listen to him in his own words through his memoir, recount his drug use is a painful time for them congressman buck, president biden was asked about whether he would pardon his son right? on this crucial point, i want to play that exchange. it was with david muir let me, ask you will you accept the jury s outcome, their verdict no matter what it is? yes. and have you ruled out a pardon for your son? yes. you have congressman buck, how do you feel about this when he s saying that to show he believes in the system and he s not going to question it with a witch-hunt to rigged and all that, right? clearly, it is his son how do you feel? does he have to take this all the way to the mat? no. pardon? no commutation of his prison sentence, which by the way, he did not he did. not commit to or or do you think it would be appropriate and not hurt belief in the system if he were to commute his son sentence i don t think president biden wouldn t do anything until after the appeals are finished. number one, and that s going to happen after the election so he s going to have much more flexibility after the election whether he wins or loses to make a decision like this. now, if he were to engage in a pardon of president trump with president trump was victims of a federal crime at the same time that he pardon his own son. i think americans would understand a father doing that but i think he made the right statement at the time and that is i m not going to show preferential treatment to a member of my own family and a quick final word, ryan, just to be clear that this would go another year, you also have a very serious yes tax evasion charge, federal charge in california, which would carry significant present time that is underway. that s right. and the justice department said that it could carry up to 17 years in jail. and what s unfortunate for hunter biden is because you didn t do a plea deal. he will now have to convictions potentially steck up against each her to us sentencing guideline. the conviction that he just got today in delaware would count against him. he will not be a first-time offender if he is convicted in california. right. which could affect sentencing. i thank you very much. ryan. katie, and congressman, i appreciate all of you very much next trump and his supporters called the doj rigged and political. so what are they saying tonight? i think you would have had a quite different storm from them. so i mean, maybe it s political break as hard as it is maybe tough just because i think it is so hard on the president, his family, but i absolutely agree this is not going to be a huge political winner for the republicans for couple of reasons. first of all, we ve actually seen them try to make a hunter biden line of attack that sticks to joe biden for five years now. i m trying to to make it central to the 2020 campaign. it didn t work and i ll tell you, we saw on the biden campaign in 2020, not only did it not work, it actually wound up highlighting some of the things that people most love and connect to about joe biden, his love for his family as humanity. so this just hasn t been a winning line of attack for them. and then also if you look at the reaction republicans had yesterday, it was all over the board to say the least. i mean, i think they recognize that the center of this conversation is really one about addiction. and that s a hard thing to seem like you re on the attack over. there s also the gun politics here. i mean, this is sort of a weird, unnatural place. it s for republicans to be arguing for less strict gun laws essentially. so no, i do not think there s gonna be a political winner for the republican by any stretch. i mean, i think matt, i m reading from the wall street journal. they write about the guilty verdict and they say the guilty verdict is likely to minimize any political impact and acquittal bio biden, hometown jury would have fed donald trump s narrative of unequal justice, especially since the justice department tried to let hunter off with a slap on the wrist plea deal. yeah. i mean, i don t think there s going to move votes. one way or the other. i mean, look at the end of the de is 50-year-old man are so he s responsible for his actions and you re lying on a federal form like that is something that is apparently great easily prosecutor able like it s it s fairly, fairly open and shut and so look, i don t think this is gonna move votes one way or another. i mean you remember, i remember 2020 debate. i think when that became an issue, i wonder if it s become an issue this time. i think it s unlikely. i think if they try the convicted felon line and that could be easier. or torque but yeah i don t really think at the end of the day this is going to move votes one way or another. and he s responsible for his actions. and we had another case coming down the pike it with tax charges in a few months. well, and also not the candidate. right. i mean, that s the other key difference here response to donald trump being a convicted felon is like, well, your son is a convicted. okay. well that s been kind of the whole, the whole game all the way along, right? so on and when you look at the impeachment proceedings against president biden, that really fizzled what they were trying to do was muddy the waters and make it and this is why they use the phrase biden crime, family, right? they re trying to tag the president with something that may be associated with the sum, but we haven t seen them actually come up with anything. right. without evidence. right? right. right at this point, i think i think what you saw yesterday in terms of the reactions from some republicans was some reaching, right? as well as an inconsistent overall message on how to react to this. you add some once again going to unfounded sort of conspiracy theories almost not mentioning the trial yesterday, not mentioning this result, but trying to indicate that there are other charges again, without without evidence, you had other republicans that seem to be saying that once again, trying to frame the justice system still as launching a witch hunt against, against trump, which again, just this would seem to muddy to undermine that argument when you have a justice department that did just deliver a guilty verdict to the president s son here. so at this point, you re not seeing really a consistent response from the gop on how to react to something that is really complicated. i mean, just a couple of days he s ago, you also saw the former president talk about the issue that was clouding this trial, which is that of addiction, one that i think many republicans and democrats know, many americans throughout the country are dealing with or know somebody who is, who is struggling with that issue. so it s not an easy one to tackle here. brandy i mean, one thing that we ve gotten in this case is that we ve actually started to hear from some of the jurors. yes. i m talking about this and this, of course something that when we have talked, obviously the former president s trial has become so political, but the jury itself, right? when you ask republicans like, hey, like, this was a jury if normal people, yes, they ll say, well, they re from manhattan, but you don t get the same kinds of attacks on the jury. and now we have jurors here in this case arguing that, hey, like our decision was not political, let s watch a little bit of that. if anybody was in that courtroom or the jury around, they would know it was not motivated by politics politics played no part whatsoever in my mind i can t speak for the other jurors but nothing was nothing was ever said about this election year that was never brought up pretty interesting texture there. yes, there is no better perspective than that from a juror. and so to hear from a juror that there was nothing in their minds that had to do with the political nature of the fact that it was president biden son, i think says a lot. i think jury systems work and i think to have our jury is talk about like, look, everybody knows is joe biden son, but at the end of the day, we re just looking at whether or not he lied on a form and whether or not he s guilty. and i think that says a lot about how intact our jury system is, because obviously there s a lot of noise surrounding the fact that it s the president s son so we re also learning about what he s going to potentially use on appeal. and the lawyers have indicated that they might try to use a supreme court ruling that actually came down in favor of conservative gun rights advocates. the president has criticized it to try to appeal this conviction is that something that you to see being potentially effective for him? line in his refusal to vote for donald trump that some republicans like mitch mcconnell is not doing that what is going on here with him? and what does it tell you about the state of the party today? i think it s easier for ryan to do. he s not an office and he s he s kind of has a nice kinda private-sector job. god bless him. it s easier to have that when mcconnell s still in office, who knows me going to run again? probably not. we ll see, but i think that is the kinda be different there. and look, i think the parties changing last ten years. i mean, we were just came upon the ten-year anniversary of eric cantor losing a primary back in 2014, and from that data, this day, who would have kinda thought i will say i respect what paul ryan is saying. he has obviously first-hand experience working with him as speaker of the house. i also don t think it s going to change very many mines and this is kind of what the other thing i talk a lot about and the kinds of democrats, but i ll just say in the context of the setting, people price in the fact that trump s has all this bad stuff. trump does this, trump says that that s fine. now we re going to talk a lot about abortion later in the show. and i think that might be the more salient issue if you re a democrat to push rather than look at what trump said now, but i respect what he s saying and i think you re right. this is the former vice presidential nominee from what, 12 years ago, but paul ryan s increasingly the minority of the party. i fight. i mean, anytime we mentioned this as an island, write a small island isolated on anytime we mentioned sort of these signs of descent, i think it s also worth mentioning the reason why it s news in a way is because it s, it s becoming increasingly rare to hear a republican kinda come out and criticized trump, love that magnitude. i mean, right, i mean, he s not let s point. i mean, he s not an office right to me, it s like such an indictment of the republican party rigueur as it stands right now, you have people for whom speaking up and saying donald trump is not fit to be present, united states might impact their electoral chances. that is, a position they should still take if that s what they believe, but they don t. and that tells you a lot hi about where the republican party, let s look at how one elected office holder, congressman troy nehls, talked about paul ryan with my colleague or my cnn colleague up on the hill yesterday. watch paul ryan, you re a piece of garbage. you re a piece of garbage. and we should kick you out of the party for paul ryan and say he s not vote for donald trump. that s the problem with some of our republicans. its guys like that. don t go spout in your mouth. often saying you re a conservative your spit in the face of the leader of our party, donald trump. i m grow up a little bit a piece of garbage. it s also like this message. i m just like fealty to the great leader rather than like making an argument that welcomes a lot of different voices and into your party, it s such a bizarre electoral strategy. i understand. you know, trump won in 2016 and since then, essentially republicans have said only donald trump is the way we can win despite the fact as paul ryan pointed out, despite the fact that they ve actually not won an election sense. and yet the message you get from republicans is like how, first of all, piece of garbage just course it s language but also it s like how dare he criticized the great leader. it s just a bizarre, i don t know. it s just a bizarre mindset. i will say this. i think troy s have bit of an outlier in a few respects because he was same guy, didn t you also came to the courthouse and like sedimentary, he knows when he has to say to get on tv. and so he knew the say something saying like this, we actually get them time on tv. so i think he might be an outlier in this. i think if you asked almost anybody in the conference, they would not agree with that. but he knows what he has to do to get on tv. but i think you re right. in some respects, look, it s easier when when paul ryan it s out of offices in office, i know trump is coming down to dc today to have kind of a meeting and looking is the leader of the party. i will say this we a primary, right? like we had and he had a one-on-one race with nikki haley. he did. and he one and i think that is it makes it a lot easier for republicans. it s not like 2016 where there s this clown car at the end where people were siphoning off votes. so i think it s easier for trump to take the mantle if he goes down there today and say, look, you had a primary i won fair and square, like we come together. well, this is the other key. i mean, paul ryan also says that he s he s not saying he s going to vote for joe biden he s criticizing trump, but he s not saying he s going to vote for joe biden. and when i hear his comments, basically expressing disappointment with both candidates, i also wonder you were talking about the primary. what that means for other voters that may share similar views as paul ryan s, such as maybe some of the haley voters, other members of the republican party are voters that are disappointed with both of these candidates. what will they do in november? and it makes you think about that when you hear those comments. okay. i think think of paul ryan, it s a nikki haley voter, didn t vote for trump, 20, didn t vote for, i can vote for trump in 24, didn t 16? z is central all right. welcome back. later this week, the senate will be voting on legislation to try to ensure nationwide access to ivf treatments it s a democratic efforts not only in trying federal protections for reproductive care, but also highlight republican resistance ahead of the november election. the vote comes as the country is approaching the two-year anniversary of the downfall of roe versus wade and made way for controversial alabama ruling that through the question, the legality of increasingly used fertility treatments. majority leader chuck schumer calling on his republican colleagues to pass this ivf bill protecting ivf should be one of the easiest votes the senate has taken all year the vast majority of senators should agree that strengthened and treatments that help people start a family is a good thing. but no way shape or form is protecting ivf a show vote. it s a show us who you are vote all right, joining me now, are new york times reporters. elizabeth is and lisa layer. they are the authors of the new book, the fall of roe and the rise of a new america. good morning to both of you. thank you so much for being here and we ll let kate and matt ask some questions as well, because this obviously is a conversation that the country he is now having with itself what how is the nation going to look in the wake of the fall of roe? and we are learning every day, the new implications that come out of it talk a little bit about how you came to write this because you really, i think set out to answer the question how was it that row fell at what did you learn in the course of reporting this that helps us understand what s going on now. sure we thought it was really important to create a narrative of just what even happened especially over the last ten years because there hadn t really been one, right? this is an issue that s pretty polemical well, and instead of just looking at that side of it, we needed to know what are the facts because he can t understand where we re going. and i were talking about ivf all kinds of issues that we had not talked about really publicly. it campaigns before mean when was the last time anyone talked about icf as a presidential issue or never? when, we were talking about your embryos on the conversation. but as long time, you can t understand the stakes about where we re going until you understand the pieces of where we ve come from. so our book, the fall of roe really takes a look at all the things that maybe people missed about how we ended up, where we are yeah, it really is the first narrative of how rho fell. it s we we did a lot of deep reporting on both sides of this fight, talk to people who really just opened up about sort of the legal and political strategy in the anti-abortion movement. and also how the abortion rights movement fail to see and some cases stop what was going on as much as they could and so it s really encompassing of the legal strategy and the political strategy of documenting this, this really like historic period and time. and i do think it s scrambled our politics massively. i can t think of an issue that scrambled or politics so quickly and so dramatically as the end of roe. and so to understand these new politics and really in some ways to understand this election cycle where abortion has emerged as this determinative issue in a way that it really hadn t been at the presidential level. you have to understand how we got to this point yeah, fascinating. and of course, we got to this point in no small part because of samuel alito is a justice who has come under increasing criticism at here. and we actually heard him on tape. this was a liberal activist who recorded him. i, at a dinner where he talked about. and again, this was someone at a party who s approaching him with her view and he says he agrees. but the word godliness comes up and i think it really ties into this conversation. let s just watch a little reminder here. i suppose that and then we ll talk people in. this country, we re leaving that keep fighting to return our country a place the bottling names. i agree with so elizabeth, i mean, you really focus in on the connection between religion and our politics when you hear that, i mean, how does it tie in with what lisa does every day? which number well, it s not a phrase you d normally hear in legal disgust, like legal decisions, godliness, returning the idea returns turn america to a place of godliness but we re seeing more and more in american public life, like basically you name, name the area where this merging of conservative christianity and, and the future, like what the certain segment of mostly right-wing of a gel calls and catholics want for the future of the country. it s a movement that prioritizes this opposing abortion often same-sex marriage, all kinds of these big hot-button cultural issues. and you hear echoes of this. all the way in the highest court, right. with samuel alito, it s why we re hearing references to the flags being flown at his home or appeal to heaven, which is another conservative christian. sort of, well, actually banner based really about what kind of country they want yeah. i mean, i think part of what our book shows that there the fall of roe was accomplished by this web of conservative activists and lawyers and, churches and other and politicians, of course, republic we can politicians who are all pulling together. there s no one mastermind. but they were pulling together in a way that took generations and part of that effort was working conservative justices up through the courts and particularly to the supreme court and then they made their sort of guidance. they made their ideal political deal with donald trump helped get them election, elected. donald trump got three justices on the court, which was pretty unprecedented and they got these justices who had come up in their movement and we re willing to strike. it s such a landmark legal precedent i m curious. did you did you find especially in the wake of the immediate political backlash that i think it s fair to say republicans are feeling after the fall of roe, as you re talking to republicans, do you do hear them charting a course forward that is about leaning further into this. do you feel that you did you hear them? recalibrating? i m just curious, sort of. well, what what what the, the political folks you were talking to, what they feel like the prognosis it s so interesting because it wasn t just that democrats didn t believe row could actually fall and abortion, even some abortion rights activists and believe row could actually fall, report many republicans didn t believe row could actually fall. so the policy that was made as we show in the book in what we call the row era was built with this understanding that a lot of these things were political positioning, or even if they republicans believe they wanted to enter abortion, they didn t actually think these policies would necessarily be put in place, then real fell and the country was plunged into the series of unprecedented debates. and all of a sudden, these politicians on both sides had to talk about things like ivf had. i think i ve heard the word missing it s kerogen uterus. use more in political discourse over the past few years. i don t think i ever heard that in all my years. all our years covering campaigns, casey ray, now everyone is plunged into this world where abortion rights are not, this abstract concept on the national level, like we re living in this real reality of like how sick does a woman have to be to get a medical exemption? what s sick enough, like what what are these things actually mean? and that s forced as you re sort of saying, a scrambling of these politics. i would ask, i m telling him i would agree with you. first of all i found in a lot of respects our sayyed it was oh, here, we have this kind of thing. it s coming like it really wasn t like for a lot of folks at very tangible thing and very, very close. and i get to that point what is one? kind of either event or decision that kinda led that we might have missed to it than that 510 years span prior that you think like this was kind of where it was set a little bit on the glide path, was the justices wasn t something more minute? yeah. and i m not saying republicans were not sincere in their desire to end abortion. i think they were. i just think nobody really thought through what it actually would mean in real life, tangible impact. it s interesting because our book starts in 2012 and right after the reelection of barack obama, and we started that point because it s really the lowest point for the anti-abortion movement. and if you remember what the country was, it s the moment when conservative christians stopping a majority in american public life. it s the moment when obama is reelected, when democrats feel ascendant, when they have this abortion rights majority on the supreme court. and i think that moment that republican autopsy, which i m sure we all remember republic, i covered that can t be he i said x each other on the plane for very many, many days, we weeks where republicans, the republican party really said we think abortions a loser. it s a loser of an issue for us. and that moment i think is overlooked because that s the moment when the anti-abortion movement let s start to claw back and they really sort of these activists, i think dug deep and figured out a new strategy. and their strategy was, we re not shying away from this word, leaning into it more. and we think are voters and our politicians will support us. and they were right in some ways, it would be really easy to just find one moment, right? if there was just one thing we all understood, then i can unlock this mystery. but this part of the major success of the anti-abortion movement was their ability not to create one plan, but dozens, hundreds of plans, right? it was this idea but they will leave no stone unturned. they would felt every crack and eventually they would build a collective, a collective body of work that would inevitably lead to the overturning of roe yeah. i think your book also kind of outlines how while these groups were able to do that and had the passion, the dedication to do this for years and years. that was missing from people, from the movement that supported abortion rights. oh, a dead. yeah, absolutely. okay. lisa lara elizabeth is thank you both so much for being here. again, the book is the fall of roe and the rise of a new america highly recommend it s fascinating raid. all right, coming up next here, the emotional toll. hunter biden s federal conviction is having on the president and his family plus joey chestnut. remember him removed from the nathan s hot dog eating contest. why organizers? and his wife, jill biden was not they re valid. biden was not there. she hurried and basically right after the guilty verdict had been red basically the first lady came up and went straight to the goodness holding room and then went to hunter and then obviously exited with him holding his hand. hunter biden when he heard the verdict he basically didn t move. he was like just this still portrait and then right afterward, he just nodded his head three times. it s okay. let s move forward. he hugged his lawyers. yes. it s wife. and then just said, let s get on with it. the next thing and there s plenty of next things to go beyond. appeals are definitely going to come potentially on second amendment grounds. you also have another trial that honestly as messy as this one was, this one. the next one might be messier because when you re dealing with a tax case, you re dealing with everything with spending money on yeah. there s a lot there. it keep any field. i mean, you when you were working in the white house, had to grapple with a lot of this as it was unfolding in real time. and one of the things i think i hadn t quite realized was the level of guilt that the president seems to feel around what hunter was going through then it obviously coincide with a time when he was deciding that he was going to run for president of the united states. can you take us inside that a little bit? yeah so yes, there is an amount of guilt that president biden feels you obviously know who s that if he were not president, if you were not front and center in our political conversation, hunter probably would not be dealing with these legal challenges but it s also important to understand about that period of time when president biden was deciding whether or not to run in 2019, that hunter really encouraged him to run and hunter didn t want to be a reason that he didn t run for president. so there was a lot of alex called it a love story. there s there was a lot of mutual love there between the two of them. both of them looking out for each other personally and wanting the other wanting to do what was right for the other so there s a lot of complicated feelings there, but at its core, a lot of love and a lot of respect it is also incredibly difficult and challenging for the president as it is for. i mean, i think any american who has a family member who struggled with addiction, it is a constant cloud that can hang over you. and obviously the president is enormously proud of how far hunter has come and how his thought to get to where he is today and protecting and preserving that progress that hunter s made is really important to the biden family and we know today in his story as well that the president does still fully believed that hunter can continue on this on his word to refer recovery. but at the same time, given all the events going on, he is concerned about what the future holds for his son as well i think that it s interesting that also you re seeing and that s evidenced also and just the movement of the president yesterday, you saw him change his scheduled to go to wilmington. you saw those images as well of him stepping off the plane, immediately embracing his son. i was in delaware last weekend and thought it was interesting that i mean, every public appearance you saw him basically attached to a hunter biden, whether they were going to church together or cycling together as well. you ve seen him really continue can you to embrace the sun? and i think that will continue as well as the language we saw from present biden statement when describing this case, when reacting to a you re going to see him continue to affirm his love for his son and continued to express empathy similar to that moment that we saw on the debate in 20 hey, 20, when trump was attacking, was going after hunter biden and the present had one of his more memorable moments where he really stood there and said, look, i stand by my son and i do love them. yeah. oh, sorry. no, no no. heading down that, the president s greatest fears, hunter relapsing and anyone knows it s been through banners and addiction. the biggest trigger for relapse is shame, which is why you have hunter always or sorry, joe biden always saying, i m proud of my son. i m proud of my son and trying to show that i m not embarrassed by you yeah. what i was going to say was they mean when you re the president there are cameras for your ever every movement, but if they didn t want a picture of joe biden embracing hunter biden yesterday. they could have avoided it, right? like they did that on purpose yeah. one sometimes when i think sometimes like joe biden doesn t even really care about the optics. i mean, i don t think having a hunter biden at some of these state dinners alongside merrick garland is like the best political optics, but joe biden doesn t care. yes, he is talking he has always going to put hunter s for hunter first. he s always going to put his family first and yes, there are times when it s optics me down. i love my son and the most important thing to me as being a father, i guess it s why kinda considering everything who said here, i am candidly skeptical of win or lose there s another, there s not a pardon in the future, forgetting every you re not alone. there are people, there, people close to the president that you didn t know. he has said this. he said this, you know, obviously very publicly there s some people around them that think he could change his mind. yeah. i mean, i think what do we have that the interview with david mirror where president biden said that he s not going to, pardon his son all right. we don t have that, but i mean there is the looming question of this, alex and in this other trial as well. i mean, if he gets off on prison time in this, which many of our legal experts have said, look like he s a first-time offender it s unlikely that this gun thing could lead even though there s a potential for 25 years, it s likely not to hit that. however, we re talking to a lawyer earlier on this program who said one of the things they could consider if there s a guilty verdict in the next case is that there will also then have been this prior conviction which makes it much more likely. i find it very hard to believe that that joe biden, the man if he has the power to get his son out of prison, doesn t do it will end as kate was just saying, you know, joe biden feels responsible for some of this because you have to remember when joe biden declared for president hunter biden is still not in recovery yet, like joe biden announces april of 2019, has his first rally on may in may of 20, 1,900 byte does not get sober until june of 19, 2019, and the thing is if you re running for president and this vicious political environment with his son that has a crack code cocaine crack cocaine addiction, you know that this is going to probably hurt his life potentially and it really has. so that s why i think that s why i think people, as you as you noted and simulated people close to the president, thank he might ultimately change his mind because he feels good. also, you referred to the abc news interview. he did say that he would not pardon his son. there is still the follow-up question of commey of commutation as well. there s multiple forms of clemency. could there be a sentence? since shortened or, or any sort of relief that way that i would imagine that that question at some points the president will face a look. i will say he he loves his son unquestioningly. he also loves his country and he also thinks that it is dangerous that we are in a moment where the rule of law is under attack, where a judicial system is under attack. so i would say don t, don t underestimate how significant it is to him that a president needs to send a message that the justice system works, that he will not inappropriately put his thumb on the scale. so i think let s see how things play out, but i would say as somebody who knows joe biden very well, i would take him at his word that he believes that but not sending a signal that he is going to interfere in the way the justice system plays out here is important and genuine, and it puts the hypocrisy of these republicans on display. absolutely accept to say absolute ipod pros, the way that they re handling this hunter thing, they re basically saying, well, it s totally not the same. i m sorry. i you mean republican politicians are looking at, you know, when, when we ve asked them and they ve responded to this, they re the speaker of the house for example, said, every case is different. the evidence was overwhelming in the hunter case, but that s it s not the case in the trump trial. yeah. i mean, look, i think at the end of the day, waiting and if you re republican politician into a hunter stuff is not going to win you any votes. let the flood the process play out. but i am very keen can you see i do think if there s a pardon, i think that could change things. all right thank you guys for that conversation. i will leave you with this get them bts army is celebrating the region turn of one of their own this morning, bts member jin has completed his mandatory military service in south korea. but k-pop star was seen leaving base today after 18 months in uniform he is far i will say, from the big first big pop star to spend time serving his country jaylen. jailhouse rock or elvis presley reported to the army after he was drafted in 19 58, the king was a soldier until the spring and 1961, earned his discharge from the army reserve in 1964 and then there was this i came

[laughter] steve: okay, more with brian in a minute but, first, a fox news alert. president biden is about to take off for italy in just about an hour from now for the annual g-7 summit in italy. lawrence: here at home concerns of terror threats crossing our southern border are becoming a reality as sources say 8 suspects with possible ties to isis are arrested after being released into the country. ainsley: lucas tomlinson joins us now with the latest. lucas lucas good morning, guys not only did they enter illegally through the southern border they apparently received, quote, full vetting according to our own bill melugin, suspects are from tajikistan the land locked country infantry in central arab borders afghanistan to the south and china to the east. recall the same suspects on that concert hall killed 45 people. those people were also from tajikistan. said in a statement to fox fbi says the individuals are detained in ice custody pending removal proceedings as the fbi and dhs recently described public and private bulletins heightened environment. dhs continue working around the clock with our partners to identify, identify and disrupt potential threats to national security. the suspected terrorists were arrested in los angeles and across the country in new york and philadelphia as well in recent days according to the new york post who broke the story, quote: part of the investigation featured a wiretap which revealed one of the now arrested individuals was talking about bombs. remember the boston marathon bombing, i m afraid something like that might happen again or worse fbi director christopher wray warned lawmakers back in april what he described as threat coordinated attack after the moscow massacre those suspects were from tajikistan like the suspects here. ainsley: i know they weren t flagged when they walked across the border when they came across the border. they were let. in once they were here, what led them to realize these guys were terrorists? lucas: it appears there was wiretaps. ainsley: what made them go to that point? what made them wiretapped? lucas: americans being surveilled. apparently picked up. also somebody could have called in a potential threat for these guys and people were warned. this is the problem americans have been worried that something like this might be happening for years now. as millions of unvetted and illegal immigrants cross the southern border. lawrence: so luke s, the question is the president released his executive action last week and banning some countries and all of that did they know about this before they released that executive action or did this come afterwards? lucas: these guys have been on the radar now for a few weeks, lawrence. safe to say, before. steve: indeed. luke s, thank you very much. and keep in mind, he just mentioned christopher wray, the director of the fbi was in front of congress in april. and he was talking about a potential coordinated attack after what happened in that concert hall. our joint task force keeping an eye on everybody. i bet a dollar to doughnuts something popped up on one of the people were surveil surveilling. oh they are in the united states. joint task force alerted ice they swept them up in new york, philly and washington, d.c. lawrence: brian, the fbi director has been talking about these lights flickering all over the board. he said that he is concerned brian they thought their executive orders they think their executive orders are going to do it. so far no discernible difference between prior and current with the executive orders. got to worry about all the stans, these guys are coming from outlaw provinces moscow and don t have love loss for us. it s really got to be cancer. if you are christopher wray. you know the danger but it doesn t seem to be relayed to the people in charge and the border patrol seems flat out overwhelmed. i also thought it s interesting, too, that we re seeing the flood of immigrants come through san diego now, california, but they knocked it down 72% in texas at the cost of $11 billion with operation lone star. texas is doing it themselves because the federal government is not. steve: that s right. great point, brian. that s one of the reasons you are down in texas. meanwhile, border patrol, ainsley to your point, border patrol let them in. these people, because they presented id but apparently those particular names didn t click on the data base. and border patrol says we know people slip through all the time but we simply don t have enough time to fully vet them. if there is 300 people waiting in line. it s kinds of like how long is this going to take? okay, go. lawrence: just a revolving door right now. this is what happens when you have zero strategy and zero enforcement. they want to be out here going after these guys. they want to be going after the drug traffickers. they have been forced to baby-sitted. they didn t sign up to be cops to be babysitters. ainsley: here is what is scary. the borders are open. millions have come across. this just 8 men that were caught. just 8. lawrence: that we know. ainsley: how many here that we don t know about that are planning attacks here. hats off to the people did recognize. this had the wiretaps. but this administration, this is a crisis from washington. this is joe biden s crisis. he has left the door open. now he is trying to do something about it because he realizes democrats and republicans are concerned about this. not just republicans anymore. and we re close to an election. steve: thank you very much, law enforcement. ainsley, speaking of joe biden. ainsley: right now, president biden is in delaware after traveling to see his son after his convince on fall gun charges, hunter biden now awaits sentence iting as his attorney vows to exauction all legal options. lawrence: brooke singman is here with the latest. the jury found the first son guilty on all counts for lying about his drug use while buying a gun. sentencing date has yet to be scheduled. hunter is now facing a hefty fine of $750,000 in a maximum of 25 years in prison. although he is unlikely to do any prison time here since is he a first time offender. special counsel david wise who brought the charges against him spoke after the verdict. listen. this case was not just about addiction. this case was about the illegal choices defendant made while in the throws of addiction. his choice to lie on a government form when he bought a gun and the choice to then possess that gun. it was these choices and the combination of guns and drugs that made his conduct dangerous. president biden is seen here hugging hunter in delaware after the verdict. the president spoke yesterday about gun safety after his son s firearm conviction but did not mention hunter s case. watch this. asses second amendment. never been a time you could own anything you want. never. you couldn t own a cannon during the civil war. steve: all right, brooke. thank you very much. the cover of the new york post. first felon faces up to 25 years after historic verdict. and i heard on one of the other channels that apparently, you know, the jury got the case a couple days ago at 3:30 in the afternoon. they deliberated for about an hour. lawrence: they were 50/50. steve: it was split 6-6. a couple hours into the second day they were like, okay. he broke the law. and here s the thing. we knew he had broken the law because he signed that thing. and we know he put that x there. so it s one of those things where if he were not convicted on this, what does it take to get arrested and convicted in delaware? lawrence: when you look at the other channels and look at their conch of it, there is this reaction to compare what happened here and the justice system what happened to trump. and they say this is the legal system doing what it does this. is the right thing. but, i think they skipped the important step, this wasn t going go to trial at first, this was not there was unprecedented deal, and if they weren t shamed, both the prosecution as well as the defense with this deal, then we wouldn t have been here. now, you take that versus donald trump where you have unprecedented prosecution. not unprecedented deal. and i think there is a clear difference judicial system shouldn t be shamed. i get that everybody has someone, probably. i know i have family members that have struggled with addiction. steve: yep all of our family members should be treated the same it. looks like hunter biden is finally being held accountable like most americans would have ainsley. and, brian, we will bring you into this, too. the trump campaign said this is just a distraction from the real crimes, the real crimes are the biden family which has raked in tens of millions of dollars from china, raush and ukraine. what we learned in this court case the laptop really was hunter biden s. we knew that before. this is additional verification of that. which means we were lied to by those 51 intel individuals that signed that letter back before the election and joe biden. who lied to us about it. anbc, and cnn and npr who lied about it. social media individuals or social media platforms that were censoring this story so it didn t get out before the election. it s not just about addiction and lying on a government form. this goes beyond that the cover-ups. the money that the biden family possibly made from all of this. before the election. and burying a story so that you didn t know about it. you, the public, the voter didn t know about it before the election, brian. brian: yeah. a couple of things. number one out of everything on that laptop it s absolutely insane the one thing they get is the gun charge. on unsavory behavior that s witnessed there they all told us we are crazy for believing and definitely effected the 2020 election. also i think it s important this guy kevin morris who is funding all his legal defenses out of money. how do i know that s not hype. his daughter raised to hunter biden you are taking advantage of my dad who is writing checks for you. yeah. his dad is the president of the united states. he can t write the checks. but some obscure producer who made money early on and a sitcom nobody watches could empty his account for a guy who can t get off crack and obviously loves hookers. other thing is, the big story is coming up in the fall is going to be the tax case. and what about the made for tv moment, i m sorry, my heart does not go out to joe biden who has to go back to his house and stand in front of his driveway and hug his son who got convicted of a buying a gun and having haley biden throw it out while, by the way an hour before he was telling us the need for gun control. who booked that gig for him the day his son is actually. lawrence: that was so dumb. brian: actually convicted of a gun violation. the dumbest thing ever but smart to have the hug in the driveway so msnbc has something to talk about. and they want to say it s no dual path to justice and trump got convict and he got convicted. it s totally different. this guy actually scripted his conviction seven years ago. they made up charges on donald trump and didn t even tell us the charges until they handed it over to the jury. and when you come up and speak about a jury decision and don t like it, that s called an american free move to do. you are not being anti-american by criticizing a jury decision. is everyone happy with the way the o.j. decision came out. are you anti-american by saying o.j. pretty much got away with murder? no, i don t think so. so, yesterday really bothered me he comes off as a sympathetic figure where everything he has done is his own personal behavior. lawrence: speaking of that, brian, this is the media s reaction to that watch. this has to be as a parent the worst nightmare come true. joey and joe biden have been role models for parents of addicted children. you are seeing sort of such a sad day on personal level, but you are seeing such an uplifting day in terms of sort of heroic action in terms of what it means to live a principle. republicans have really struggled to make this line of attack stick because most people see this and feel sympathy. it is not an unfair verdict. they followed the law. but it s a sad verdict. this trial was so personal and so painful for the biden family. the details in this case, sarah, as you well know are really ugly and they are really sad. brian: we don t have audio here but just know, guys, that msnbc and cnn says it s a very sad day for the biden family which is true but it s all self-inflict and we will see how you guys feel about it. we are in cubey s in dallas. get the pulls of the people. what is your name? marlow. brian: what is your opinion on the hunter biden decision. one, you mentioned sympathy. i m wholly in agreement with you. if he had been doing crack cocaine or had an addiction for decades before his brother died, why would i feel sympathy? it had nothing to do with his brother dying. as far as the verdict, it s appropriate, he probably won t get jail time but he should get three felonies? what about one month each. other people go to jail for committing that crime. brian: because you guys are very aware of gun laws, especially in texas, right? very conservative organization on abortion rights. and the bottom line seemed to be to keep from the left for showing up at all. but what he had to say wasn t good enough for the right yeah. i think this really just represents how difficult of an issue abortion is for republicans, it s essentially a lose-lose situation, and we ve seen how donald trump has struggled to grapple with that fact and figure out how to speak on it. so he faced he faced backlash from the left because of course, this is an extremely concerning derivative group that wants to ban all abortions and so their argument was, why is he showing up at all? and then he faced backlash from conservatives who argued that he sounded like a politician and his brief pre-recorded remarks, he didn t mention the word abortion at all. he didn t take pride for overturning roe as he so often does but it encapsulates how the abortion issue is really, really hurting republicans and how they ve just struggled to figure out the happy medium and how to talk about this issue. because again, i mean, this is the difference between a pre and post row america in a world where roe v wade stands, republican politicians can and would go into these groups, talked to them and say definitively, life begins at conception. this, we shouldn t be doing this, et cetera. without any actual risks that those policies are going to become the law of the land? no. yes. and i think the other thing is we ve seen how donald trump donald trump in 2016 won a lot of support from the anti-abortion movement because he promised all of these things he delivered on them. and this time around, i talked to activists in this group all the time about this issue. and throughout this entire election, they ve been really concerned that donald trump has left them by the wayside. and so to me this, these pre-recorded remarks is trump s sort of attempt at saying, i m still with you. i m still here but also trying to walk that really fine, almost impossible line to get those moderate voters over to his side as well. yeah let s talk a little bit about president biden because we are starting to see, or at least it seems like we re seeing a very small shift potentially in the polling in biden s direction. we don t want to overstate it because this race is so incredibly close, right? and we re still kind of gathering data in a post conviction world but i do feel like there are some i m picking up some more positive vibes from democrats shall we say, in the wake of this, i think they were a little reluctant to weigh in initially, what is your reporting on how this seems to be playing out so far? well, it s interesting because we still don t know exactly how the trump conviction is going to affect voters long-term. it does is you said seem to have maybe shifted things a little bit four at least the short term, who knows, in five months what s going to happen but what i think is notable as every time i talked to the biden campaign, they ve been really focused on saying throughout this entire election that they re going to focus on touting his accomplishments, focus on trying to remind voters in a very tough election cycle what he has done. and so this this gun speech is going to be one of those prime examples. it s an issue that a lot of voters care about, particularly his core base and we re going to see a lot from him about this issue and we ve already seen how there also at the same time contrasting what joe biden has accomplished in office with donald trump s policies. and so this gun speech, represents how the biden campaign is trying to run their campaigns. one other message that the biden campaign has been trying to really push. and if you know anyone that works for biden comes to the set, they will say they will make this argument that donald trump is out for himself, that he doesn t care about voters, which is why it stood out to us on the show when donalds, this is from over the weekend, donald trump rally in las vegas. here s what he said to his supporters. there. take a look. by the way, is that breeze nice? do you feel the breeze because i don t want anybody going on me. we need every voter. i don t care about you. i just want your vote. i don t care i don t care about you. i just want your vote from the man himself. yeah. and i think the big thing when i talked to voters at these events, you have to remember these events are tailored for donald trump s core base of supporters. you re not often seeing. people maybe except for the new york events that he has held which are not technically large scale rallies, but at these large-scale rallies, these are as core base. these are the people have the memorabilia and they have the t-shirts were in line for hours? exactly. so they gaza. it s a lot the us is saying, hey, we re waiting on hamas. what, where does this stand at this point? well it s not entirely clear is that we re hearing a lot about in hamas is core. other people are saying it s in israel s court as well, hearing their from the us ambassador to the united nations saying israel has agreed to it, but has agreed to it in its current form the government that is currently in. so you have now benny gantz has left the israeli war cabinet and it s now become more right-wing. so will they agree to this deal within this broader deal, as i understand it, is the idea of a palestinian state in future. and that is something that the right wing of the israeli government won t agree to. so i think clarity is needed on whether the us ambassador to the un is right. is that israel, the current israeli government, whether or not it actually supports this deal, then of course yes, the question about whether or not hamas some supports the deal as well, and whether or not even if they get to the point of negotiation, whether it holds but i think that that clarity on both sides is needed. but as you say, we don t often hear from that palestinian ambassador in the us max. we re, we re also getting some reporting in the wall street journal about yahya sinwar is the head of hamas his correspondence with his compatriots, but also with mediators who are going back and forth trying to get this deal. and the way that he frames this, he says, quote, we have the israelis, right where we want them and then he goes on to say in another message that he cited civilian losses in national liberation conflicts in places like algeria, where hundreds of thousands of people died fighting for independence from france. and he said, quote these are necessary sacrifices. and quote, so we ve kinda east talking about these people who are dying in gaza as a way to pressure the israelis. it s a pretty stark and difficult way of looking at things and this is something that when people who are supportive of the israeli is trying to recover their hostages, et cetera. they point to this and they say, look, hamas uses its people this way well, i think a lot of the quotes open to interpretation on such a divisive issue. and i know the article makes the point, but his ultimate goal is to appear to win a permanent ceasefire that allows hamas to declare victory by outlasting israel. so i think there s a real awareness within israel in many parts of israel that, that might be the strategy here on the her mass sayyed, there will be people saying that this is a fight we can t we have to outlive it and then you have these quotes which do seem ruthless another one says you ll remember when the political leader, ishmael hernia, his sons were killed. and there s a message apparently, these messages are coming from people have different views on sinwar as we said, he wrote that the deaths and those of other palestinians would infuse life into the veins of this city, the former new york city corrections commissioner, who it s just explaining a little bit here. this could be an is usually a drawn-out process it s just the beginning of what can be a pretty long and sometimes intrusive process. so you shouldn t take too much that it was just a first polite interview that a probation officer has wide berth here so this was the start of something that certainly not the end not the end, joining me now, cnn legal analyst, joey jackson. joey. good morning to you. it sounds like we got a slightly different version of donald trump than we often see on the campaign trail when he talks talk to his probation officer. i m still working on getting over the fact that this is the reality that we re living in, that this is what we re covering day in and day out considering he is the republican presumptive republican nominee for president. but what do you take away from what unfolded here? jc, good morning to you. it is a very pleasant surprise and quite unusual from what we re used to in terms of rashness, in terms of making statements about the system and being a victim in an injustice. and so yes, it isn t surprised. but remember we re big picture what this is about, right? there s something called a psi. what is a psi pre-sentence investigation and pursuant to that investigation, a defendant, as we look at here, now, a convicted felon is provided with the opportunity to give information with respect to things that are relevant about you. like what like your family background, like your mental health history and status, like the nature of the conviction and how it affected your ability to support and otherwise provide for your family? generally not getting into the facts and circumstances the case itself, which is why counsel generally doesn t even appear or need to for that matter. and the whole reason for that case, he of course, is that then you go from a psi pre-sentence invented that s the patient to a psr, right? lot of acronyms, pre-sentence report and that report is certainly helpful for a judge to provide sentencing to the defendant, having learned more about them, and then of course this comes with and along alongside what your attorneys will give, which is their recommended condition with respect to the sentence. and then prosecutors will weigh in and then the judge will certainly look at all of it and render a fair and just determination as to what sentencing should look like joey is plausible here. mean like i completely understand why this process exists for your average defendant who is not known to any of these officials in this system, right? i mean, how ever many cases come before them day in and day out. this is typically pretty routine thing. this is not a routine situation like if you re the judge here how much does this actual process do you think? do you think judge machinery knows what he s gonna do three parts to the question. i think number one, in terms of the nature and typical illness of this for mr. trump, it s not right. we know i think people in general about him. he s run for president before he served as president for he ran again for president. and he s running again. and so i think generally the typical defendant to your point, is not someone who s known to the judge and the judge is trying to get a broader perspective with regard to who you are, what you do. number two, in terms of the process itself, it s helpful and important for a judge in general because it does give a deep dive into who the particular person is, what their families about, what their mental health history, about who they are about what their thoughts in nature of the system are about to give you a better rendering of a decision number three, in terms of the judge, i don t think so. okay. see, i don t think judge machine has made up his mind you know, and i know that by nothing in terms of having spoken to him or knowing anything about it. but i think that the process provides for the nature of what happens and what does happen. what happens is, is you re attorneys provide their view defense attorneys with respect to what they fair. and justin appropriate prosecutors way in the department of probation can ways in because they will give casey they the department probation the essence of why he gave this interview a recommendation and i think the judge takes all that into account and let s not forget when you re attorney he s provide their memorandum. it s accompanied by all kinds of letters and documents and things about who you are, what you re about, the redeeming qualities you have and all the factors that talk about the aspirational nature of the actual in most instances, the aberration on nature. it s not typically who the defendant is, judge, this is something that was a one-off, your honor. whatever arguments you make, but there are multiple letters that come with that. and then of course, at the sentencing itself, casey very briefly, the attorneys are afforded an opportunity to make oral argument with regard to what they think it should be added. the defendant, him or herself, in this case, the former president has an opportunity to render some kind of public statement about how they feel. and then oftentimes you get victim impact statements two and so i think because of all that it would really be a disappointment and i m sure that s not what judgment shot is doing to say i ve got my mind made up, i m just going to render a decision. i don t need any of this. all of it is important i mean, sometimes come game de the sentencing day judges do change their mind right then and there. so see what happens here. very interesting, very briefly, joey, let me ask you about the other case that s unfolding. and that s a hunter biden the jury has this case. how long do you expect it to take for them to reach a verdict on something like this so you know, casey, that s always the wildcard in terms of the timeframe and i don t think we could draw anything into the time frame, of course, deliberation, just having begun yesterday, of course, this dealing with three different counts, did he lie to a federally licensed firearm dealer that he lie on the form with regard to the purchase of the weapon or did he illegally possess it? so those are the issues i think they re very clearly defined. what s a bit murky is whether or not there s really, was he addicted at the time, whether he thought he was addicted at the time, was he deceiving himself? what this evidence of that regard and let s not forget, he s got home-court vantage has families pretty popular in delaware? it matters. i think you have an african-american jury that is pretty intuned to what s appropriate, what s in just et cetera and so let s see whether or not we get a hung jury for finally, jury nullification, whether the jury says, you know what, perhaps it s something you did i think there s shaming addiction. we re not going to do that and then let s throw it out. courts has been arguing that, but the prosecution saying it s about line let s see what narrative the jury comes up with. well, know, sue. all alright. joey jackson for us this morning. joey thanks very much the story. the former house speaker kevin mccarthy, reportedly planning a revenge tour. nbc news reporting mccarthy is seeking to retaliate against republicans who voted to oust him last year. this has really been an ongoing thing, but it s starting with republican congresswoman nancy mace of south carolina, cobo, an nbc operatives aligned with mccarthy are directing big money into these races through outside groups. tuesday s challenge to mace is the first test, and then we ll see house freedom caucus chair bob good, who faces a primary in virginia next week two other anti mccarthy voters representatives, eli crane of arizona, matt gaetz of florida, also have primary challenges. this summer mccarthy denies it s a revenge mission and says he s not targeting anyone these are the eight republicans that you mentioned. you see them on your screen what s the first thing that comes to your mind when you see them just function, are you on political vengeance store? no no, i know you guys tried to say that. now, last week i went to los angeles, orange county, san diego raising money for the republican party are you okay. joining me now, senior congressional reported for punchbowl news. andrew does siderio andrew, this is revenge tour. this is the revenge tour. one to the tune of enantiomers, this case, $9 million in outside spending against her in the single house race and a single single house primary? yeah. yeah. it s that s wild. yeah. what are what is the likelihood that any of these folks are going to lose their primaries? well, look, i think it s very possible that nancy mace loses her primary, for example, today, i think that s the big race that everybody is going to be tuning into those other ones you mentioned probably not. but kevin mccarthy is very much interested in toppling the people who were sort of orchestrating the push to oust him from the speakership so andrew can you walk me through also the dynamics in the bob good house race in virginia because that one is really interesting. he is the freedom top of the freedom caucus. he is someone who has, it s not just kevin mccarthy. he s made angry. what s going on with that, right? so donald trump hasn t endorsed his his primary opponent, for example, which was quite stunning to learn, especially given that bob good is, as you said, the chair of the freedom caucus, and he s got a lot of conservatives both movement conservatives and conserve as on capitol hill, who are very much behind him and trying to make sure that he wins his race. he was one of the aid, of course, who voted to oust kevin carvey. so there s that dynamic there as well. i will tell you a lot of freedom caucus members are a little bit upset with donald trump and his political operation at the level at which he s, he s gone in terms of the intensity of trying to endorse me it s primaries. they think it s not productive, not helpful or not helpful to the conservative cause. in particular to be endorsing against these members particularly when you have bob good, who someone when who is the chairman of the freedom caucus, the freedom caucus have ten years ago is not the freedom caucus of today. it s basically a devotion to donald trump, right and bob good is especially so circumstance because he endorsed ron desantis early on in the presidential campaign. so there might be some bad blood there between him and donald trump, and that might have led to the endorsement of his primary opponent. but it s definitely an interesting dynamic to watch it multiple revenge tour is kind of taking their way through his district exactly how i would say it. so this is something that we ve been found how in closely on the show, different, different topic the questions about chatgpt the new kind voice of chatgpt and scarlet johanson, who is very upset about that to the point where she sued over the fact that there was a very uncanny pressure on hamas joining me now to discuss as cnn national security analyst shawn turner, shawn, good morning to you let s just dig in a little bit at to what blinken is doing here. the way that american officials are framing this in public is that they are waiting on hamas, that israel is on board with this american plan, but there does seem to be some murkiness around it. how do you see this playing out? especially in the wake of this very high-profile hostage rescue that also of course led to the deaths of scores of palestinians good morning, case you it s good to be with you when you he listened to israel s response to the biden ceasefire plan. i think that would most people are hearing is you re hearing comments like israel accepts the plan, urine comments like israel believes that this is a good first step, but we re not hearing a full-throated endorsement of the plan and i think that while that a lot of people are cautiously optimistic that this is the plan that will achieve a ceasefire. there s still a lot of unknowns here. look, i think that what i see here is a fact that israel this feeling, increasing pressure from the international community. it goes without saying that this is no longer a localized or regional issue for israel, that the pressure is intense and they re being criticized by all sectors of the globe so i think that what we re going to see here is we re going to, we re going to see the support of this plan continued to strengthen or going to see israel wait this out, and we re going to see hamas as we always see with hamas, try to leverage this plants to get as much as they possibly can. i think this is the best possible option that we ve had in a long time. so i m cautiously optimistic that this is going to work out shawn there s some reporting in the wall street journal about messages from mr. sinwar, who is the head of hamas, who has been messaging with hamas officials that the qatari and egyptian emissaries, and it s reported that he said, we ve the israeli he s right where we want them. and then he also compared what s going on with palestinian civilians to national liberation conflicts in say algeria end. he said, quote, these are necessary sacrifices and quote, how do you think that illuminates the thinking of hamas at this point? you, at this point 0.1 of the big concerns that we ve all had is the fact that hamas continues to use civilians to achieve their objectives. i mean, when we look at the number of palestinians who have been killed, it s, it s astronomical i think that what this does a message like that i think it s obviously not constructive, casey, because there is a deal that s on the table. and what hamas needs do if you read the language of a deal, it s very clear in terms of what hamas needs to do. there s no wiggle room for hamas. and so a message like that suggests that there is wiggle room at that there s some negotiation that can or should happen with israel, and that s simply not the case. this is a deal that lays out what hamas should do. and i think that the challenge punch that we see with hamas is that even though we see a message like that, hamas is not always in control you have a number of different groups and factions that be maybe making decisions that are not necessarily in line with with what the negotiators want to do so it s not helpful. but again, i think that that s the kind of rhetoric we oftentimes i m see. this is a good deal and there s a real opportunity here to really some of the pressure and two, and the humanitarian crisis in new details this morning about the israeli military operation that rescued four israeli civilians held by hamas this new video edited and provided by the israeli military appears to show some israeli soldiers escorting the rescued hostages toward military helicopters on a beach in gaza. these for israelis now reunited with their families and just beginning to recover from their months of captivity. among those rescued 26-year-old noa argamani, who is abduction during the october 7 attack was captured on tape. noa screamed for help as she was forced by hamas members onto the back of a motorcycle. and driven into gaza. the idf raid also resulting in the deadliest day of the war in six months. at least 274 people killed according to gazan health officials the idf disputes those numbers, saying that the number of casualties was under 100 cnn cannot independently verify the death toll and we don t yet know how many of those killed were hamas fighters and how many were civilians. but we do know that the hostages were being held in residential homes in a densely populated area cnn also learning this morning that some idf soldiers disguise themselves as hamas fighters and displaced palestinians to conduct the raid. joining me now to discuss, is cnn political and national security analyst david sanger. david, good morning. i m very grateful to have you here for folks just tuning in after the weekend. a very dramatic time for the israelis here at with this raid. how do you see the fallout here as we see these hostages reunited with their families, but we also try to figure out to count the dead among the palestinians good morning, casey. and i think you ve captured it right? it was an incredibly dramatic weekend. and i think there are three salient points about the rescue. the first is the operation itself was a miracle of terrific intelligence, great covert work, and getting in there and getting them out. then certainly something to be celebrated. there are more than 100 hostages left, but this was clearly a big win on saturday morning when when this all took place. the second is at once again, it came at a great human cost as many israeli operations in gaza have and this is the sort of brutal calculus of this, which is maybe it was under 100 pounds justinian s dead. maybe it was over 200 is a palestinian say, but the fact of the matter is that we saw a huge number of palestinian deaths in order to accomplish the long-sought release of these four and that seems to sum up much of what s happened during the war. i think the third thing we re discovering as monday morning rolls in here, is that after this dramatic weekend, the rescue did very little to change the fundamentals of the problem that is real faces benny gantz, the former defense minister and, and head of idf took a day off or pushed an extra day because of the rescue but resigned from the war cabinet shattering that view of unity and he did so saying that prime minister netanyahu who does not have a plan for the day after four administering gaza yeah, david, in fact, let me pause you there because i did want to get to that next with you and we have a little bit from gantz over the weekend and what he said, how he explained why he was leaving the war cabinet. let s watch sorry. can you regrettably netanyahu is preventing us from advancing toward true victory, which is the justification for the ongoing and painful cost of war that is why we are leaving the emergency government today with a heavy heart, but with full confidence i call on netanyahu, set an agreed election date. don t allow our people to get torn apart so david, he said there that netanyahu is preventing us from advancing towards true victory what does he really getting at here? because he also seem to suggest that netanyahu was unnecessarily prolonging the war right? this has been a long-held view, including among american officials that prime minister netanyahu knows that once the war is over, or at least a ceasefire takes place at the active fighting is done the investigations into october 7 begin in earnest. the intelligence failures israel obviously had a good deal of intelligence. this would happen that it did not respond to the idf s failures. that israeli defense force in responding that day. he assumption is that prime minister netanyahu couldn t not survive that and of course, one of the beneficiaries could well be benny gantz himself, who ran against the prime minister a few years ago, laws. but today is doing well enough in the polls, but it s not inconceivable that he could emerge victorious. also, not certain but what we re seeing now is the united states with benny gantz s help, tried to get the israelis to commit to what president biden snap elections situ in situation. one like it is a situation to which i cannot resign myself. the rise of nationalists and demagogues is a danger not only for our nation but also for our europe and a complicated situation for folks in the us who don t necessarily follow the ins and outs of the european parliamentary elections. but big picture is that we have seen kind of a across the continent these far right parties surging in a way that has really concerned the sort of center right? majority governing parties. and it so much so that you saw emmanuel macron take this pretty significant action. it s a risk for him to do this. why is he doing it and how does it help explain the big picture of what we re seeing here? hi, a lot of people quite baffled because off the back of a european election where in france at least the far-right, did extremely well he s now going into another election. he called it and it s going to benefit the right. many would argue because they can ride on that momentum, but he is effectively saying he wants to hand it over to the french people who he believes are generally moderate. and of his point of view. so he can prove that the european election, which is often a protest vote for european voters, won t actually hold in a national election. so a massive risk, and i think even the people closest to them realize that, but we ll see he, how marine le pen does out of that steadily over recent years she s been increasing in authority and power and she s doing what many of the european parties are doing, which is focusing on immigration. and ukraine and also environment. but on this basis that really resonates with a lot of people, which is that the cost of living is getting worse and worse inflation s going up. we can not afford to do all of those things. we have to hunker down a look at nationalism. and i think if you look at the overall parliamentary picture, then the moderate still hold it. but in the key country, the big economies, france, germany, and italy, the far right? excelled. so it s going to have a huge influence. yeah, we can put up on the screen for people to kind of see in color the way that this broke down in france. so let s set aside the yellow that s other, but that red piece which is clearly the most significant one for a named party, is the national all rally. those are the right wingers that 15% purple that you see the renaissance party, purple, blue. that s macron s party. and max, to be clear, we saw something similar play out in germany and in italy can you talk a little bit about how this strengthens the more right-leaning leaders who are in office in europe well you know, it s already got a right-wing prime minister. so she s empowered and marine le pen, as i say, he s been climbing steadily in germany. a lot of people would view that party. now the second most powerful party in the country as traditionally a very far right party. so it has huge influence because germany and france and italy are the three countries that have most influence over the european union i was interviewing a us expert based here in the. uk earlier on, and she was talking about how this will empower trump effectively. a lot of the wright was rising in europe before trump, but chump managed to popularize a messaging and they ve adopted a lot of that. so he certainly added energy to the rise of the right here in europe and it also means that the more senior these right-wing politicians become, the more contacts and power he has within europe. so it s very empowering to him and his foreign policy. he creates alliances specifically for him within countries which were traditionally us allies. so it has a it will have a big impact on trump if he gets into power and it will cause a problem for biden if it gets into power bi, it s going to be much less supportive of him and his policies going forward. yeah it s an interesting way to think about it. and i also think one of the things that donald trump has done that we remark on it, but i think perhaps not enough. and that is to normalize things that previously were considered out of bounds. and the politics and the way we re thinking about politics. and you can really see that in some of these right-wing up pushes, bringing things in that previously were considered to be verboten are not acceptable on our stages. max israeli military appears to show helmet camera from israeli soldiers coming under fire while rescuing those hostages. one resident of a refugee camp in gaza claims he saw special forces with the israeli military disguise themselves as hamas fighters. and palestinian civilians during the operation the operation did come at a great human cost. scores of palestinians dead, just how many? we don t know. gaza s health ministry says the numbers, at least 274. israel says it s fewer than 100. i am joined now by joel rubin. he is the former deputy assistant secretary of state in the obama white house. joel, good morning to you. wonderful to see you this morning let s start with the raid for people who are two doubt on a summer weekend, just waking up to this news, these four hostages rescued this clearly was something that i mean israeli families of hostages have been increasingly more and more upset about the fact that their loved ones have remained in captivity. what does this mean for them? yeah, it was a dramatic rescue without a doubt and have very high costs as you described with a palestinian loss of life what it means is that the israeli defense forces for a day for a moment, restored confidence in the israeli public about their capacity to deliver and to get their people out. but in the big picture, the best way to get israeli hostages out has been through deals, through a cease fire for hostage exchange, like one that we saw back in november. so a good day for israel, a unity didn t last long. obviously, the politics in israel very, very dicey with benny gantz. now exiting the coalition government. but it was something that the israeli public has been demanding. and now they want more action. they want to see the prime minister lean-in on getting a deal to get these hostages out. of course the toll here was very high in terms of palestinian life. it all so served to highlight some of the tactics that hamas uses talk a little bit more about where these hostages were found. and why there was perhaps so much collateral damage. obviously, much of it should be laying at the feet of the israeli forces that invaded here. but that s not the only thing at play, not at all. the case you re right, it was despicable. display of how hamas d values palestinian life. so many very clear these hostages were held in private civilian homes they were there for months and they were in the midst of what everyone in those areas new was a civilian areas. so israel, by finding these individuals, by rescuing them, it was clear that there were going to be civilian casualties. hamas doesn t care about palestinian civilian life. i i know we ve talked about this before, but this is perhaps one of the most a stark examples of that. if they cared about palestinian civilian life, they would be agreeing to the ceasefire proposal that has been out there and discuss secretary blinken s going out to the region to try to push for this, but in the meantime, hamas is embedding hostages in civilian areas with the clear understanding, this will cause palace let s see any civilian lives for a propaganda bonus may be for hamas, but i don t see how this is a real bonus for anybody in the middle of this conflict. they clearly are not looking at civilians as something to protect inside of gaza. so let s talk big picture for a second. you mentioned benny gantz, of course, announcing over the weekend and he s going to leave the war cabinet. he is, of course, someone that the us has really relied on in the course of these negotiations in this push for a ceasefire that president biden actually announced on a recent i ve friday. here s what jake sullivan, the national security adviser, had to say over the weekend. let s watch keith thinks the best way to get all of vestiges home is in a deal where they re brought out diplomatically, where there s no need for military operations to get every last hostage out. what we would much prefer to see is a ceasefire where the hostages come out peacefully. that is available. israel has said yes to it. now hamas needs to say yes to it. that s where president biden full effort, energy and attention is so bottom line, draw what s the holdup? while the holdup is hamas? the holdup is that hamas is i want to agree to a ceasefire that essentially pushes them out of the power. and that s the genius of this proposal, which is that it lays out a roadmap for preventing at the end state of resurgence of hamas in the gaza strip. and now that, that is, of course, very frustrating as well to the white house, because what we re seeing is the far-right ministers in israel s government rejecting that proposal as well. and now with ben against leaving the coalition it gives them a little more power in the near term, but it also puts the question to the israeli public. and i think this is why the president did go public with his proposal to get the israeli public to recognize the stakes, to put it back in the political arena. this question about how to end this war in a manner that we don t see a hamas resurgence in gaza and so the holdup right now is that hamas understands this proposal is against their interests and that s why we see the secretary going out. that s why it s frustrating that it s not yet done. but hamas, they re hoping for more days of violence, like on saturday where they don t have to make this agreement. and that means more palestinian lives are put at risk. machel rubin for us this morning, joel, always appreciate your experiments for being here all right, let s go now to politics. donald trump, tried to win over voters in nevada. a key swing state with his first official campaign rally since he was convicted on felony charges i tell you what? no third world country in during triple digit temperatures as trump rally them in an outdoor event in las vegas, nevada. of course, one of a handful of states that could help to decide the presidential election this fall, a new cbs poll shows trump in a virtual tie and a head-to-head race with president biden, both nationally and in these key swing states. today, trump is scheduled to have a hearing with his probation publisher of axios nick. good morning. great to hear so yeah, probation hearing for a presumptive sentencing name. you d sentenced you just read off the teleprompter there, i think speaks to the kind of interesting election where in, where that sentence one interest hide across as the country tied and state sentenced to one of the candidates will have a virtual interview with his probation officer. today yeah that s seen as pool. actually interesting because it s one of the first things, places where we seem to see maybe a little bit of movement. obviously the official way we talk about it is that it s tied. there s no clear leader, but there is a little bit get over movement toward biden compared to where this pole previously was. what does that tell you? it s pretty clear across the board that again, within the margin of error is and all of these poles we ve seen a slight polling bump four biden, and then a lot of the surveys were the vast majority of people say that conviction won t have any impact. there is 20, 30% of republicans who say it well, and remember, we ve been talking about for months and months it s in a month. this is a very tight election for donald trump to win. he needs to get more voters and he needs to get the last time. and so far, being convicted of a felony in new york is not leaving more voters for that. but again, all of these are the margin of error. it s like going from trump up to two biden up one that is essentially a coin flip election still. yeah, it is yes. very, very, very close. so let s listen a little bit to some of what trump had to say in this rally over the weekend because is there are a couple of things that stood out to us, including how the former president talked about, well, i mean, he he always uses very often inflammatory language about joe biden. but in this case, he was talking about suicide as well let s watch this du are there this is a front row joe. he said everyone this guy wouldn t it be incredible. he s gone to 250 if he voted for biden, even for by now, i don t think so. i think it would be suicide before by dry a bit extreme i don t know how a front row you thought about that. i think we re seeing that this is trump being trump, like they re even though there s a big conversation a lot about how much will they stick to the issues there s pulling out over the weekend that shows what a strong conjugation issue the economy is as opposed to conviction. and so can trump come out and just talk about the economy and immigration for the next six months. i think that little snippet shows that will been a challenge for some of the president s former president s advisers. they gotta to do that. yeah, let s talk about nevada specifically for a second at trump also was up there. this is sort of a typical line, but he said it in front of it. a crowd. again, it s a very heavily hispanic at stateless watch. what trump had to say about hispanic and african-american voters joe biden is also weighed. you re going all out war on the workers have america, especially african americans and hispanic in america i spanish americans and african americans are the ones suffering most with his incredible illegal alien group that s coming in so this is, this is pretty typical for how trump talks about this kind of thing. but i think what s going on in nevada is particularly interesting. i will say i have okay to a lot of sources recently who think that it actually may go for trump. this time around and it s part of it s part of the reason is because of some of the themes that he is talking about. there, there are a lot of workers that tourism economy, cassino workers, who in the past had gone for democrats who may actually go republican this time you hear this was a big, i mean, again, this is a point-slope election. there s a lot of things happening that people don t really understand because this is such a different election than ones previously. and i think one of the ones that republicans are trying to capitalize as those capitalizes, in row on minority voters with hispanic americans or african americans, as well. that s clear on the polling data that donald trump is doing better with those groups in previous republican candidates. and i think his campaign, his advisers, he, that is a huge, massive opportunity. again, the same way that if a small amount of those republican voters are moved by the conviction, if a small amount of minority voters are moved by some of the present former president s economic arguments that the election right, they
