Washington — House Democrats from New York are threatening to oppose future tax legislation unless it includes a repeal of the state and local tax deduction cap, amping up the pressure on congressional leadership to make that change in the package they’re planning to tether to President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill.
Democrats in New York’s House delegation except U.S. reps. Kathleen Rice, D- Garden City, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D- Bronx, signed a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D- Calif., saying: “This issue is so critical to our state and our constituents that we will reserve the right to oppose any tax legislation that does not include a full repeal of the SALT limitation.”

Washington — U.S. attorney general nominee Merrick Garland promised Monday that the Department of Justice would pursue any evidence of fraud in a federal investigation he may soon supervise of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s handling of nursing home deaths during the coronavirus pandemic.
“With all of these investigations, the Justice Department is open to evidence of fraud, false statements, violations of the law,” Garland said during his Senate confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate. “They normally begin in the relevant U.S. attorney’s office.”

Washington — Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer’s plan for $25 billion in grants for struggling restaurants will be included in the Covid-19 relief bill that Congress is preparing to pass in the next few weeks.
“Restaurants and bars, like our arts venues, are the places that suffered the most because when people can’t go out, they don’t go to restaurants,” Schumer, D- N.Y., told the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce on Friday. “They need special help, not just the small business help. ... It’s one of my very highest priorities.”
