Pentagon to lift Trump-era ban on transgender troops

Pentagon to lift Trump-era ban on transgender troops
“Trans rights are human rights,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, “and on this #TransDayOfVisibility, I’m pleased to announce we've updated DoD policy on the open service of transgender individuals.”
Reversing one of former President Donald Trump’s most egregious civil rights rollbacks, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday—International Transgender Day of Visibility—that it would soon allow openly trans people to serve in the U.S. military.
In a statement, the Pentagon said that as of April 30, the Defense Department’s Obama-era policy—which for the first time allowed trans people to serve—would be restored, “provided all appropriate standards are met.”

(CNN)They dreamed of serving, and now they can after President Joe Biden lifted the Trump-era ban on most transgender Americans joining the US military.
Paulo Batista held onto his dream, even when it seemed impossible. Ever since high school, Batista wanted to join the military and serve his country, inspired by his father's time in the Air Force.
"My father is a first-generation immigrant," said Batista. "This was some way to pay back and show love for the country. It was embedded in me, and it became a passion."
Batista joined the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) at his Florida school, but when it came time to enlist, his father needed him. Batista's father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and he put his own life on hold to care for his family. But he made his father a promise: he too would join the military and serve his country.

The United States military teaches troops they must believe in service before self.
“That’s part of the Marine Corps ethos is putting your troops, putting the mission ahead of yourself,” said Emma Shinn, a captain in the United States Marine Corps, who identifies as a transgender woman.
Shinn is also the president of SPART*A, the nation’s largest nonprofit working with trans people who are actively serving in the U.S. military.
“We show up, we are capable, we are qualified, and we help accomplish the mission everyday," she said.

President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that lifts the Pentagon's ban on transgender people serving in the military. It had been put in place by the Trump administration.
At a signing ceremony in the Oval Office, Biden said the order reinstates "a position that the previous commanders and, as well, as the secretaries have supported."
"What I'm doing is enabling all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform and essentially restoring the situation that used to be before, where transgender personnel -- if qualified in every other way -- can serve their government in the United States military," he added.

In a long-awaited move for members of the LGBTQ military community, President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday that repeals the Trump administration’s prohibition on transgender Americans serving openly in the military.
Under the Trump ban, the military could refuse to admit openly transgender recruits, and could move to discharge certain non-exempt service members (largely those who had not yet transitioned) if they attempted to receive medical care for or were diagnosed with gender dysphoria. The ban was estimated to affect up to 15,000 service members, according to the Transgender American Veterans Association.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order Monday lifting a Trump administration policy that largely banned transgender individuals from joining the U.S. military and prevented service members from transitioning while in uniform.
The executive order overturns a March 2018 memorandum issued by President Donald Trump that restricted military service for transgender individuals, and immediately halts any current involuntary separations, discharges or denials of reenlistment over gender identity concerns.
