trying to find people who may be trapped in their homes, many who perished when the waters came through. one local here described the impact on this area of these floods. >> thinking about all the devastation that i've seen all over the county, there are this some things that can't be rebuilt. these people, their water had got in homes that had never been concerned with water issues. now their homes are gone. where are all these people going to go? where are they going to live? if they don't have a family member that they can go to. >> reporter: here in jackson, crews are staging from this shopping center parking lot, going out and trying to find people amongst the destruction. people say it will be a long time before this place recovers at all and it will need a lot of help to get there. evan mcmorris-santoro, cnn,

>> evan, i'm curious. the death toll as it stands in newark is eight. do authorities have a handle where others are missing? it's a big city. there are a lot of homes, right. i'm curious if they've been able to account for everybody. >> reporter: well, we know last night authorities were out trying to rescue people, rescuing people. we heard about that on the subway trains, getting people out of the subway trains in their houses, they were calling on one. we've seen authorities going around, door to door, asking if they are missing anybody. everybody is accounted for. those efforts are underway. that's one of the reasons we've seen officials saying to people stay home, stay out of the way. this is still an active moment where they are actively searching for people. we don't know what the numbers are going to mean, we don't know what's going to happen with that, but we know it is still an active thing going on in new york, jim. >> goodness, let's hope they are able to find everyone who is in

still presenting danger. and, boy, takes a long time for structures to recover from this kind of damage, too. evan santoro, thank you so much. allison chinchar following this from the weather center in atlanta. allison, for those who are in the path of all this, what should they expect in the coming day? >> all right. so, the big news is the additional rain at this point is really going to be limited to eastern massachusetts, maine, areas like that because the bulk of the rain has really moved out of a lot of areas. you're seeing videos now of areas of new york and new jersey and pennsylvania. the sun is out, which is good. it will allow them to assess the damage. it will allow the clean-up process to begin because if it was still raining in those areas, it would delay them being able to get a lot of that cleared up. the one thing to note, though, we talked about this before. it's the river flooding. it's a delayed process. it's not like roadway flooding where the water eventually drains out. the river gauges that you talk
