University of Virginia Press John Churchill was a distinguished and beloved Arkansan whose posthumous collection, “The Problem with Rules,” is a continuation of his lifelong advocacy of the liberal arts. Readers may have known the Hector, Arkansas, native because they took his philosophy courses at Hendrix College or had an audience with him when he served as dean there. Others may have known him as one of the designers of the Arkansas Governor’s School curriculum or as the executive secretary of Phi Beta Kappa, the historic academic honor society. A lucky few may remember him as the author of an exceedingly wild (and unbelievably true) story about his family’s obdurate pet pig. Churchill was a true polymath brilliant, but also charitable and gregarious. He died in late 2019. Those who knew him may be comforted to hear his voice through this work, which reverberates with generosity, wit, and Monty Python references.

50 Best College Movies of the Last Five Decades By Kristin Marguerite Doidge, Stacker News On 2/11/21 at 8:00 PM EST College movies are a cinema staple, delivering those who attended college doses of nostalgia and those who didn t plenty of drama, comedy, and general mishaps to hold their interest. Films with college as the backdrop often focus on characters who are learning what it means to be an adult for the first time, and these stories rarely feature a smooth journey. Lawrence Turman Stacker gathered popular college movies from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, pulling each film s audience-based IMDb rating and critic-based Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer rating. All relevant movies were then ranked based on the Stacker Score metric, which weighs both the IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes measurements equally. The top 50 are presented here and ranked from worst to best. While college isn t always the focus of the films on this list, it is the setting at the very least. Also included are details about how the film and its creators have impacted college students and culture at large.

We received a few Christmas cards this year, all wishing us âa better 2021.â The year 2020 had been a hard year for most folks. Personally, the COVID-19 pandemic claimed three close friends. All were professors at the University of Alabama who played key roles in my career as a historian. Additionally, in August my wife Grace was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. It has metastasized to her lungs and associated skeletal structures. This is her third and probably last bout with cancer. Surgery in October put Grace in ICU for days. There was no Thanksgiving because, due to radiation and chemotherapy, Grace couldnât eat. Our daughter and her family cancelled plans to visit due to COVID restrictions that would have led to a two-week quarantine when they returned to Pennsylvania. Thatâs when I gave in to the current âcancel cultureâ by canceling Thanksgiving and Christmas.
