Husillos earns 400 metres gold in Torun three years after world disqualification

Spain’s Oscar Husillos earned European indoor 400 metres gold in Poland tonight - three years after he had seen victory in a European indoor record of 44.92sec disappear through disqualification for lane infringement at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham.
Husillos just managed to hold off a strong Dutch challenge from Tony Van Diepen and Liemarvin Bonevacia in a season’s best of 46.22, his expression swiftly changing from agonised effort to relieved joy in the spectator-free Torun Arena.
But if Dutch ambitions were thwarted in the men’s 400m there was no holding the Dutch phenomenon Femke Bol as she lived up to all expectations to win the women’s 400m final, improving her European 2021 best time by 0.01 second as she clocked a personal best of 50.63.

ROME, MAR 4 - Italian long jump sensation Larissa
Iapichino said Thursday she dies not expect the comparisons with
her mother, twice world champion Fiona May, to stop any time
soon.
"I think the comparisons will stop when I have won more medals
than her," the 18-year-old told a video-conference before her
debut with the national team at the European Athletics Indoor
Championships.
Iapichino holds the world lead with her recent jump of 6.91
metres in Ancona.
But she played down the high expectations of her.

World-class rivalries for European Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun

European Athletics will stage the first multi-discipline championships in the sport since the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic when the 36
th edition of its Indoor Championships start at the Torun Arena in Poland tomorrow.
Among the world-class athletes who will be taking advantage of this landmark opportunity will be Norway’s 20-year-old European 1500 and 5,000 metres champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who will seek to earn the 1500-3,000m double that just eluded him at these Championships in Glasgow two years ago.
On that occasion, having won the 3,000m title, Ingebrigtsen was tracked and outsprinted to 1,500m gold by Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski, who will contest both events for a host country seeking to top the medal table at the Indoor Championships for a third successive time.

Men’s high jump
While Covid-19 seems to have impacted this event in a big way, performance levels were already down before the pandemic struck.
Five athletes shared an indoor world lead of 2.33m earlier in the year, the lowest world indoor lead in 37 years. Outdoors, only one jumper, 22-year-old Maksim Nedasekau from Belarus, jumped 2.33m – the lowest world lead for 39 years.
