rival by at least 20 points at this stage has ever lost a party's nomination. so consider this new poll out today. former president donald trump not just 20 but 37 points ahead of his nearest competitor. it's a "new york times"/sienna college poll that also finds 54% of republican voters support him, just 17% ron desantis. but mike pence, nikki haley, tim scott all far behind. just 3% support. joining me now, former aide to speakers paul ryan and john boehner and msnbc political analyst brendan buck. brendan, what do you make of this huge lead for president trump in this poll? >> well, i think we've long known that donald trump has a stranglehold on the party. that's not terribly surprising. what was most interesting in this poll is it revealed to me the fundamental flaw of ron desantis's strategy. this poll is really high quality. it asks a lot of interesting questions. one of them was things that voters are interested in. and it looked at voters who are

The Story With Martha MacCallum

did you talk to him about the changes on the campaign team? they let go close to 40% of their staff and looking for a new moment here. what did he say about that? >> yeah, he said, look, the flaw is that they were trying to run a national campaign before they were running a local campaign. he said right now it's about the resources going to iowa, new hampshire, south carolina and nevada. the first four states that are going to vote as a part of the primary calendar. i asked him directly, do you have to win and will you win in iowa? he said -- he dodged it, but i think the answer is the desantis campaign has to win or come in a very strong second in iowa january 15. >> martha: the fox polling showed the former president well ahead in iowa and in new hampshire. so he's got an uphill climb. there's time. we'll see what happens. thanks, clay. >> keep up the good work. >> martha: you too, sir. so congress woman anna paulina

last week. the grand jury here in washington meet today and meet again thursday, so those are both possibilities for indictments. but to underscore your point, it doesn't mean it's going to happen this week. it could be a little bit down the road, but let's talk about location. give us your thoughts as to the fact this happen, is going to b unsealed here in washington, d.c., and not florida. why does that matter going forward? >> right. so, you know, as a lawyer, the technical reason it matters is because venue is proper in the district of columbia for these charges, and it is a fatal flaw in an indictment if you bring it in the wrong federal district. there are a lot of per accep perceptual reasons. people are concerned about the trial jury in the mar-a-lago case which will be in florida, a pro-trump area. i'd caution people to get overly concerned about those sorts of

>> geoff, i mean, why are they tiptoeing through the minefield? >> one of the most damaging effects donald trump has had on our party he taught us to mistake honesty for weakness and that's a fatal flaw. you watch these folks try to step up to the line and think they're playing cute orsome political adviser is in their ear about the next fund-raising, look, there is no other place to be on january 6th than it was wrong. there's no other place to be on the 2020 election than it was fair and legal. there's no other place to be on ukraine than vladimir putin is a warmongering thug. but, yet, he wants to blur all of this. i think this is a golden opportunity for somebody in the field to step up with all the energy and strength in their body to step up and say, donald trump is wrong, i'm going to prove it and i'm going to win the hearts and minds of republicans so i can win a primary and eventually beat joe biden. >> not only are you really not seeing it on the 2024 trail except from the obvious candidates but house speaker kevin mccarthy who, you know, had, of course -- let's just look at what he said in the days

doesn't -- he mentions the new york. case he doesn't even -- mention >> well, it's pretty disingenuous. this is a guy who was a drag in the military. if he had done, for example, the documents what president trump did, he knows he would be in prison. that's why he doesn't want to discuss that case. everyone is afraid -- they are tiptoeing through the minefield, because donald trump is still popular within the republican party. and they don't want to take it head on. >> jeff, why are they tiptoeing through the minefield, as david puts? it >> one of the most damaging affects donald trump has had on our party is that he's taught us to mistake honesty for weakness. that's a fatal flaw. you watch these folks try to step up to the line, and i think they are playing cute or some political advisers in their ear about the next fundraising. look, there is no other place to be on january 6th and it was wrong. there was no other place to be on the 2020 election than it was fair and illegal. there's no other place to be on ukraine then bladder vladimir putin is a warmongering slog.

convert that kind of enthusiasm to voters in iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, places where he hasn't been governor, then that will be a problem. he has to figure out how to uncork that knot. >> harris: doug, hillary clinton, somebody you know well failed to connect with voters, especially women and trump beat her. >> that's exactly right. hillary out raised donald trump in that election but her failing to connect proved to be a fatal flaw. the other point i would make about that chart is that while ron desantis narrowly out raised trump, trump has 22 to 12 million on hand for desantis. he has more cash on hand and harris, having been through this process with both bill and hillary clinton at different times. when you are 33 points in the
