Women's Hoops Hosts Arkansas in First ACC/SEC Challenge

TALLAHASSEE, Florida – The inaugural ACC/SEC Women’s Basketball Challenge comes to Tallahassee in the 2023-24 season, as Florida State plays host to Arkansas on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Network designations will be released at a later date. The matchup vs. the Razorbacks is the second confirmed game of the 2023-24 campaign for Florida State Women’s Basketball, with the other being a neutral-site game vs. UCLA at the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase on Sunday, Dec. 10, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

The Seminoles and Razorbacks meet for just the second time ever and the first since 2011. Arkansas reached the WNIT Great Eight last season and finished 24-13 overall and 7-9 in the SEC.

Florida State is coming off its 10th consecutive trip to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, currently one of just eight programs to enjoy a streak that long. FSU brings in a talented 12-player roster for the 2023-24 season headlined by returning All-ACC performers Ta’Niya Latson (sophomore guard) and Makayla Timpson (junior forward).

Latson Wins 2022-23 Tamika Catchings Award

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State Women’s Basketball’s Ta’Niya Latson has won the 2022-23 Tamika Catchings Award as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s National Freshman Player of the Year, announced on Tuesday by the USBWA. The USBWA has presented a women's National Freshman Player of the Year Award since the 1991-92 season. Two seasons ago, the award was named in honor of Tennessee legend Tamika Catchings, the USBWA's 1997-98 national freshman of the year and a three-time All-American. DePaul's Aneesah Morrow won the award last season. Latson will receive the award at the USBWA College Basketball Awards Banquet in St. Louis on April 12, which is hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club. The Miami, Fla., native recorded one of the best freshman seasons in collegiate basketball history, averaging 21.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, shooting 45.5 percent overall and 36.2 percent from 3-point range. Latson became the first freshman ever to lead the ACC in scoring and set the single-season scoring average record by a freshman in the conference with 659 total points. Latson also shot 85.9 percent (171-of-199) from the free throw line, the second-most free throws made in a season at FSU and the most since Carla Williams’ record-setting 189 made free throws in the 1995-96 season. Latson and the Seminoles earned a No. 7 seed to their 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament, and finished 12-6 in the ACC this season. Florida State’s 79.3 points per game this season is ranked 10th nationally. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected a women's All-America team since the 1996-97 season. Seminoles End Season Against Georgia

IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 7 seed Florida State Women’s Basketball ended its 2022-23 campaign after falling to 10th-seeded Georgia, 66-54, on Friday afternoon in the NCAA First Round held at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The Seminoles (23-10) were without the services of proven scorers Ta’Niya Latson and O’Mariah Gordon due to injuries. They also sustained a long time period without All-ACC Team member Makayla Timpson, who suffered a cut above her eye five minutes into the game and missed nearly the rest of the first half. Thank you for the ride #NoleFAM 🍢We'll be back 👏🏽 pic.twitter.com/e4XOT4Uwcl— FSU Women's Basketball (@fsuwbb) March 17, 2023 Undermanned with 7-8 players, Florida State gave everything it had. The turning point came toward the end of the third quarter and early in the fourth when the Lady Bulldogs went on a 14-0 run. Georgia turned a 43-40 lead to a 57-40 advantage with 7:43 left in the game. Graduate guard Taylor O’Brien concluded her collegiate career in fine fashion, scoring 15 points with four rebounds and two steals. O’Brien, who enjoyed a tremendous four-year career at Bucknell before transferring to FSU, got the Seminoles back into the game by scoring eight straight points to cut FSU’s deficit to 43-40 with 2:03 left in the fourth quarter. Redshirt senior Erin Howard led FSU with 19 points and nine rebounds, marking 26 consecutive games with at least one 3-point field goal made. The Madison, Wis., native caps her strong career having led FSU with 56 3-point field goals this season. Florida State started the game holding an 18-13 first-quarter lead, but Georgia’s matchup zone defense extended itself more as the game went on. UGA guard Diamond Battles led all scorers with 21 points. The game was mostly a defensive slugfest, with UGA shooting 39.7 percent overall and the Seminoles shooting 26.9 percent. FSU was able to out-score the Lady Bulldogs (22-11), 15-8, in second-chance points. Georgia out-rebounded FSU, 48-38. Florida State returns next season looking to reload despite losing O’Brien, Howard, Valencia Myers and Jazmine Massengill, whom all have exhausted their NCAA eligibility. The Seminoles look to make it 11 consecutive seasons of making the NCAA Tournament – a current run that only seven other programs have matched.
