Countdown to Iowa

hearing from a lot of trump's campaign people, people around him, they are very worried about turnout tomorrow because they are concerned if there is not a huge turnout he's not going to have the resounding victory that they're looking for. what is the concern about what that could look like? >> an expectations game. look at the polling, he was 48 in "the des moines register" poll. cbs surveyed today, nationally he's at 69%. so, it's, sort of, unheard of, the idea that the party would nominate someone who's not at 69 nationally. but on monday night, if he comes in with a number that's way lower than what the polls are forecasting, that provides a narrative to nikki haley or ron desantis or whoever to say, look -- that keeps the ball bouncing for them in new hampshire and beyond. they've been trying to lower expectations. the biggest win in a caucus, 12.8%. they're going to spend anything above that number. the reality is i think they need to be 20-plus to keep up with

i want to get, i want to get your sense, i think a lot of this top line is whether, the organizational structure. at the end of the day, us all campaigns do, they go down to how these people feel about the candidates. even in a caucus state, they matter more because you are turning out in that regard. how do you see the translation coming out of iowa, into new hampshire, for all of these candidates? maybe desantis drops out or whatever, the reality is, the play among the voters is going to be the important thing. what do you think, do it a little forecasting ahead, voters looking at iowa are saying, okay, they're coming here next. does this change for them? what happens? or does it solidify the opportunity. particularly given that new

hampshire has more democrats at play. >> so, i'll do a little forecasting, then a lot of forecasting. i've been thinking near term and for term on this. in the primary, the way that nikki haley is trying to win is by pulling in those independents, and, maybe some democrats in iowa. certainly some in new hampshire. that is a democratic play, you are watching this play out. nick they are trying to look at suburban areas around major cities, so in lynn county, around des moines. all of these areas, they've been spending time. it's more moderate, there putting this together in iowa. the way they're hoping to -- is by continuing the narrative of an upper trajectory. she's had that, they see that in the latest poll, in the pole

democracy itself. take a look at this january six antidote for 2021 profile of then representative peter meijer, whwaousted from congress after voting to impeach trump. meyer approached remember who appeared on the rgof a breakdown. he asked his new colleague if he was okay the member responded he was not, that no maer his belief in legitimacy of the election, he could no longer vote to certify the results, because he feared for his family's safety. it is that fear, folks, and in some instances, it's getting republicans to fall in line behind trump. there are countless factors that elected officials must wrestle with the forecasting a vote. but the threat of violence, i don't think it should ever be one of them. i mean, well. >> the reality is, it's on us. it's on us. >> who is? us >> we the people, u.s., us. as we are tolerating this, we are not holding these legislators and this former president and his ilk

crimes. and so, this idea that there is no separations, that somehow these are joe biden's indictments, of course they are not. it is not even the doj's, necessarily. they have a special counsel who is separate, and has his own authority. he went to a grand jury, and of the grand jury voted and found that he had probable, there was probable cause to show that he committed crimes. so there are guardrails in place to make sure that there can't be these political prosecutions. now, will that be the case if trump were to be elected? you saw in the argument during that hearing, trump's lawyer get up and say oh, well then all bets are off to. western district of texas, biden could be charged for mismanaging the border, which is not a crime. but he was very much forecasting what trump would do in office. he said there would be cycles of recrimination that would shake our republic. this wasn't a truth social post, this wasn't something they said on. the >> so why do you think the lawyer legally did such a poor job? is it just pleasing the client? >> i went to law school with

if a former president who tried to steal an election is running from the white house again to finish the job, what self respecting republic wouldn't have a way of defending itself against an enemy such as that? and keep in mind, donald trump was sitting there the entire time, glowering, according to reporters in the room. the ex president looked dour, scribbling notes to his lawyers. it sounds like his message got through because toward the end of the proceedings we heard some particularly trumpian arguments from his attorney when responding to the plain truth put forward by jack smith's team. >> that's not a frightening future. what he is forecasting is a situation where the floodgates will be opened. we are in a situation where we have the prosecution of the key chief opponent, who is winning in every poll. and is being prosecuted by the administration he wants to replace.

what he is forecasting is a situation where the floodgates will be opened. we are in a situation where we have the prosecution of the chief political opponent, who is winning in every poll. and is being prosecuted by the administration he wants to replace. that's the frightening future. that is tailor made to launch cycles of a combination that will shake our republic into the future. >> just a really classic trumpian propagandist lie right there, casually winning in every poll, said almost as a stipulated aside that no one can rebut. clearly comes directly from trump. that is the kind of thing the boss wants to hear. he sits there while three judges weigh his potential freedom. the entire argument from his legal team, all of it today, was just about as chilling a warning as to what is at stake in this election as anything we've encountered this far, which is saying something, save for the actual bloody spectacle of january 6th. today's arguments were clearly a test. they felt like that in the moment. you could feel it.
