SEATTLE , Apr 7 2021 (IPS) - “A crime against humanity” and “a disgrace to our great country”: that’s how 99-year-old Benjamin Ferencz, the last surviving prosecutor of the Nazis at the Nuremberg war-crimes trials, characterized the Donald Trump administration’s coercive separation of thousands of immigrant children from parents seeking asylum.
Former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein cited a statement by the American Association of Pediatrics that the family-separation policy was a form of “government-sanctioned child abuse” which could cause “irreparable harm” with “lifelong consequences”. He added: “The thought that any State would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable.”

TEGUCIGALPA — Honduran Foreign Minister Lisandro Rosales will on Friday lead a delegation to Washington to seek economic help following two devastating hurricanes that have contributed to increased immigration, three Honduran government sources said.

Tegucigalpa (AFP)
Dozens of Honduran civil society organizations on Monday demanded the "immediate" resignation of President Juan Orlando Hernandez and main government officials for having turned the country into a "narco-state."
Hernandez's brother was sentenced to life in prison by a New York judge at the end of March for large-scale drug trafficking. During the trial, US prosecutors said the president had been a "co-conspirator" in Tony Hernandez's crimes.

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden’s special envoy to a group of Central American countries began a two-nation tour aimed at addressing soaring migration by meeting Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei on Monday afternoon.
Ricardo Zuñiga’s visit to the so-called Northern Triangle countries comes as the number of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border leapt last month, adding urgency to Biden’s push to revamp U.S. border policy while trying to manage people flows.
Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras constitute the Northern Triangle, a region which in recent years has provided the bulk of U.S.-bound migrants.

On Tuesday, March 30, accompanied by an African asylum seeker serving as translator, Newsweek
gained access to the El Chaparral migrant camp in Tijuana, Mexico, just across the border from the San Ysidro border crossing near San Diego, which more than 2,000 people call home.
About 25% of the camp residents are children.
These are stories of some of those children, and the adults who try to teach and care for them.
For their safety and protection, we did not photograph them unless they gave us specific permission to do so, and we have given them pseudonyms.
