says the city is simply not built to handle a tropical storm hilary. what the city has been doing is trying to prepare the best that it can. what you're seeing throughout this area of mission valley is main thoroughfares like this one completely shut down. the reason for these barriers is because the street behind me, this is an area, if you're familiar with san diego, mission valley, that is a known flood zone. there is a san diego river over there and then all of the hills you see, some of the desert area, all of that, that funnels down here into the water and the infrastructure needs to hold. what the mayor has said is there's approximately three to four inches that have already come down and expected over the next 24 hours three to four times that much. that's why the san diego unified public school district has delayed the start of school by a full 24 hours. it was scheduled to start on

getting a lot of rain. some parts of southern california only get two inches of rain for the entire calendar year. we are definitely seeing at least a month's worth of rain, several months worth of rain in some cases more than a year's worth of rain in a 24-hour time frame. so, we know that the topography there, it is a big deal. we are going to see huge problems, you know. a lot of topography is mountains, you have rain falling in the mountains, it all funnels down into to the valleys below. it can fill the creeks. you can see life-threatening flash flooding in a blink of an eye. it is very dangerous over the next couple of hours across the state and, even points north. we are seeing impacts across nevada. as the moisture continues to trickle to the north we will

the city has had three to four inches already, and the expectation is, in these next few hours, the city could see three to four times that much. that's why you are seeing things like this. i want you to take a look. this entire road is completely closed off, and the reason why is because this area right behind me, this is really a bit of a concrete jungle. this is where a lot of the water from the hills, from the deserts, all funnels down into these drains. and so the concern is that, you know, you have drainage. and that's where you can run into some flooding issues. so the concern from the city is whether the infrastructure can take it, especially in august when people are not expecting it. and a lot of people aren't heeding some of the rules. all these barriers that were put up, we saw people were simply driving around them. it wasn't just one car, it was one car after the other.

hawaiian islands. we have an area of high pressure to the north, there's hurricane dora. the pressure gradient between these two weather systems are actually putting that squeeze on the hawaiian islands and what that's doing is helping pick up the winds out of an easterly direction. so gusts, get this, have been over 80 miles per hour. that's equivalent to a category 1 atlantic hurricane, however, we can't say that the windser directly associated with hurricane dora, but the winds are equivalent to a hurricane status. look at this, current wind gusts 24 miles per hour, that's at -- or that's sustained winds, that's at the airport within maui, however, we do expect stronger wind gusts especially on the west side because similarly to santa ana winds in southern california, once the air rides up and over mountainous passes and funnels through these canyons, it actually helps speed up the airflow, increase the wind speed. it also dries out the winds and it also creates warmer temperatures at the lower
