Leaders self-isolate after contact with Macron

BRUSSELS • A host of European leaders are self-isolating after coming into contact with French President Emmanuel Macron, who tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday.
Both Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his Portuguese counterpart Antonio Costa have tested negative for the coronavirus but will stay in self-isolation, their offices said.
Mr Sanchez will remain isolated and under medical surveillance until Dec 24 and will be tested again at that point, a statement from his office said.
He was the only member of a Spanish delegation to come into close contact with Mr Macron during a visit to Paris for an Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) event on Monday, it added.

Macron Says He's 'Doing Well' Despite Symptoms

Macron Says He’s ‘Doing Well’ Despite Symptoms
French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday said he was “doing well,” albeit experiencing some symptoms.
In what looked like a self-shot video from the presidential retreat in Versailles where he was isolating, Macron said he was experiencing symptoms that included headaches, fatigue, and a dry cough. He promised to give daily updates and be “totally transparent” about the evolution of his illness.
“I am doing well,” the 42-year-old French leader said. “Normally, there is no reason for it to evolve in a bad way.”
Macron said his infection “shows that the virus really can touch everyone, because I am very protected and am very careful.”

Europe braces for holiday COVID-19 surge, tighter restrictions

Europe braces for holiday COVID-19 surge, tighter restrictions
Europe has entered the final week before Christmas with multiple countries bracing for a post-celebration coronavirus fallout.
A number of countries are increasing their restrictions ahead of the holidays, while others such as Northern Ireland and Wales have already announced lockdowns to begin straight after Christmas Day.
Cases are spiking across Europe and currently many leaders are in isolation, after French President Macron tested positive with COVID-19 earlier this week, days after attending an EU summit in Brussels.
Slovakia's Prime Minister Igor Matovic, who attended the same meeting, has also tested positive for the coronavirus it was announced on Friday (local time).

Coronavirus-stricken Emmanuel Macron at French presidential retreat with fever

Coronavirus-stricken Emmanuel Macron at French presidential retreat with fever
As French President Emmanuel Macron rides out the coronavirus in a presidential retreat at Versailles, critics on Friday called out slip-ups in his virus protection behaviour, from a close-quarters handshake to repeated big-group meals over the past week.
It's seen as a bad example and unfair to his compatriots, just as France sees a new uptick in infections and doctors are warning families to stay cautious this holiday season — especially at the dinner table.
While Macron usually wears a mask and adheres to social distancing rules, and has insisted that his virus strategy is driven by science, the 42-year-old president has been captured on camera in recent days violating France's own guidelines.

Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine trial is now fully enrolled

Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine trial is now fully enrolled
From CNN Health’s Jen Christensen
Johnson & Johnson said Thursday that its late stage Covid-19 vaccine trial is fully enrolled.
The vaccine, made by J&J subsidiary Janssen, comes in a single dose. The trial now has about 45,000 participants.
The company said with the high rate of disease transmission among the general population in the United States, this number of volunteers should be enough to quickly get the data the company needs to determine if the vaccine works and to determine if it is safe.
J&J expects to have interim data by the end of January.

Was Emmanuel Macron careless in his conduct before testing positive for COVID-19?

Emmanuel Macron has raised eyebrows among several compatriots who have suggested he was careless in the days leading up to his coronavirus diagnosis.
The French president tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday and has since taken himself to a retreat in Versailles to isolate. He later said he was feeling "well", despite developing a dry cough, fever and fatigue.
Prior to this, however, Macron's calendar week was particularly busy, and included multiple face-to-face meetings, lunches and dinners - at least one of which appeared to break his own rules.

From Bows To Handshakes, How French President Emmanuel Macron Let Social Distancing Slip

Emmanuel Macron shakes hands with OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria at the Elysee Palace.
Paris:
Once an early adopter of the coronavirus-proof 'namaste' greeting, French President Emmanuel Macron was showing signs of letting his guard down almost a year into the pandemic.
On Monday, three days before his office said he had tested positive for COVID-19, Macron greeted OECD chief Angel Gurria with a warm hand clasp in the Elysee palace courtyard, pulling the 70-year-old into a loose embrace, a Reuters picture shows.
They were wearing masks, but Macron broke his government's no.1 pandemic rule: stick to what the French call "barrier gestures" and avoid handshakes, hugs and kisses.
