EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The United States restricts travel from India this week as the country battles a massive COVID-19 variant outbreak.
We’re hearing from local medical professionals about the chances of variants like this appearing in our region.
Dr. Gina Huhnke, the Director of the Emergency Department at Deaconess Hospital says, as of right now, there are no cases of the India variant in our region.
From what we know so far about that variant, Dr. Huhnke says not having as much access to the vaccine and having large numbers of people together increases the chances of producing the COVID-19 variant.

Indiana COVID: 4 questions as mask mandates set to expire by April 6

By April 6, mask mandates in Evansville will disappear – kind of.
Both Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and the Vanderburgh County Commissioners announced on Tuesday that they will follow Gov. Eric Holcomb’s lead and let the COVID-19 face-covering requirement regress from a “mandate” into an “advisory.”
Capacity restrictions will fade away as well. But some masking requirements will linger – especially in K-12 schools and government buildings. And businesses will be free to enact restrictions of their own.
“We’re not saying don’t wear masks,” Winnecke said. “We’re saying wear masks … but the city government is not going to mandate it.”

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Deaconess officials are warning residents to be cautious while out the cold weather, saying the number of emergency room visits tend to rise during the winter months.
This warning comes after an accident at Reitz Hill earlier this week. According to 911 records, a man went down the hill and rammed into the field goal post on the practice field.
His injuries are unknown, but he was taken to Deaconess Midtown Hospital.

Leadership Everyone Announces Celebration of Leadership Nominees

Leadership Everyone Announces Celebration of Leadership Nominees
2020 was a rough year that saw every aspect of our daily lives turned upside-down. Businesses found themselves under restrictions that not only limited the number of people who could be inside their establishment, but also put a dent in their ability to make a profit, and nearly every non-profit in the area saw a dip in donations thanks to the cancellation of annual fundraising events. However, as the old saying goes, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going."
We see it any time a problem of any kind arises. Certain people step up to lead the charge, refusing to let the situation get the best of them and their community with innovative and creative ideas. It's those individuals, and those who see a need within their community and work toward creating a solution, that Leadership Evansville looks to recognize each year with their Celebration of Leadership Awards.
