Libya's oil industry falls hostage to politics, again

Libya’s oil industry, the lifeblood of its economy, has once more fallen hostage to a political schism, as the re-emergence of parallel administrations has forced many hydrocarbon facilities to close.
The state-run National Oil Co (NOC) this week declared a halt to operations at two major oil export terminals and several oilfields, halving output to about 600,000 barrels per day in a country that sits on Africa’s biggest oil reserves.
The latest in a succession of political fissures since the 2011 fall of late Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi cracked open in February, when the parliament, based in Libya’s east, selected a new

Libya has a unity government, looks for return to stability

By Hamza Mekouar – Libya’s parliament on Wednesday approved a unity government to lead the war-ravaged North African nation to December elections, a key step towards ending a decade of chaos. Oil-rich Libya descended into conflict after dictator Moamer Kadhafi was toppled and killed in a NATO-backed uprising in 2011, resulting in multiple forces vying for power.  “This will be the government of all Libyans,” interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah said, in a brief but emotional speech after the vote. “Libya is one and united,” he added.
After two days of intense debate in the central city of Sirte, parliament approved Dbeibah’s cabinet, with 121 of the 132 lawmakers present voting in support, the parliament spokesman said on live television.   “Thank you for your trust,” Dbeibah told lawmakers. “Thank you for putting the nation’s interest above all else.”
