In 17
th century Japan, Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada) has come home to a peaceful life with his family. That is soon interrupted when his nemesis Bi-Han (Joe Taslim) arrives to wipe out every living member of Hanzo’s family, ending in a deadly martial arts duel between these two ninja assassins. Bi-Han believes himself to be victorious, sending Hanzo to his death. However, Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) arrives on a stream of lightning (looking like a character out of John Carpenter’s
Big Trouble in Little China) to take the hidden infant daughter of Hanzo to safety.
Flash forward to present day, and we meet Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a washed-up MMA fighter trying o support his family on occasional $200 fights at the local boxing gym. After losing another match one evening, Cole and his family find themselves under attack from Bi-Han, who now calls himself Sub-Zero, until they run into former Special Forces Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), who distracts Sub-Zero long enough for Cole and his family to escape, but not before Jax directs Cole to find Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee). As it turns out, Cole is a blood relative of Hanzo, destined to reunite selected Earthrealm warriors to defeat the Outworld warriors led by Sub-Zero. However, the Outworld warriors are hot on the trail of Cole, Sonya, and her prisoner Kano (Josh Lawson), and after a brief defeat of Syzoth (a lizard-like creature capable of invisibility), Kano agrees to lead Cole and Sonya to Raiden’s temple for training. This all leads to a few showdowns between the Earthrealm and Outworld warriors before the credits roll.

Bloody & brutal Mortal Kombat gets back to video game basics

Ludi Lin and Max Huang in
Mortal Kombat.
When the original
Mortal Kombat film came out in 1995, it was among the first wave of movies based on video games, coming just three years after the game itself debuted in arcades in 1992. Like virtually every other video game adaptation since, it was much derided for its laughable plot, dialogue, and, most importantly, action.
Twenty-six years later, not much has changed in the reboot of the franchise except one key thing that lines it up much better with the aesthetic of the video game series. In this
Mortal Kombat, the central figure is MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan), who is initially unaware that he shares a heritage with the great Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada), an 1800s-era Japanese warrior whose family is slaughtered in a brutal opening sequence.

Mortal Kombat Is Hollywood's Latest Disappointing Action Film

Mortal Kombat Is Hollywood’s Latest Disappointing Action Film
Vulture.com

Hollywood has forgotten what to do with the human body.
This truth has seeped into every genre of film today. Musicals lack wit and the understanding that more than just the face can tell a story. Superhero flicks and IP franchises retain an unfortunate stranglehold on the industry but make legible the utter sexlessness in American cinema as a whole. This year’s
Mortal Kombat adaptation — which dropped simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max last Friday — is another paltry reminder that Hollywood has abandoned the sincere pleasure action films provide: pointing a camera at a person in motion to showcase their beauty and savagery.

Mortal Combat

HBO Max, Downtown Center, Park, Sunset Drive-In
Directed by Simon McQuoid, this most recent installment in the Mortal Combat franchise follows MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan), whose career seems to be fading fast. It's all but over ... except just maybe he's the only offspring of 117th century ninja clan leader Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada), who was defeated by evil Bi-Han/Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), who slew the whole Hasashi bloodline except for a hidden infant daughter found by Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano)—lowercase god of thunder—who saves the girl so she could continue the Hasashi bloodline and its prophesy that the blood of Hanzo Hasashi will unite a new generation of Earthrealm champions to defeat Outworld before Outworld wins a 10th Mortal Combat tournament and takes over Earth.

Reasons why Mortal Kombat deserves a sequel

Unless you’ve been banished to the Netherrealm, you’re probably aware that the highly anticipated
Mortal Kombat movie dropped this weekend. Fans have been waiting over 25 years for this live-action adaptation — and the numbers speak for themselves. The trailer broke YouTube viewership records when it dropped in February, clocking over 116 millions views in its first week, and despite the pandemic,
Mortal Kombat also led this opening weekend's box office, as well as set HBOMax records. The question remains, though: Was it enough to break the curse of bad video game adaptations? Director Simon McQuoid’s first feature is light on a cohesive script but heavy on action, and at times is a goofball gorefest with more deep cuts than Mileena has teeth.

Mortal Kombat Is Chock Full of Characters, Clichés, and Cool Fights

Screenshot: HBO Max
After spending the last two decades re-watching 1997’s so-utterly-bad-it’s-good
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, fans like me finally got a new live-action movie in the franchise. Just like the previews promised, 2021’s
Mortal Kombat comes with great fight scenes and a lot of faithfulness to the many characters it includes from the source material. But it also delivers a bland lead and an abundance of clichés. The combination of silly action movie tropes and seriously fun fight scenes result in a middle-of-the-road movie that can be entertaining—if you know what you’re getting yourself into.

The Ending of 'Mortal Kombat' Explained

The Ending of 'Mortal Kombat' Explained
The newest addition to the Mortal Kombat universe teases a sequel in the best way possible.
Warner Bros.
When a new movie in the
Mortal Kombat franchise comes out, most people assume that it is going to contain an epic showdown between Outworld and Earthrealm, (otherwise known as, you guessed it, a Mortal Kombat). The reality of
Simon McQuoid’s newest addition to the Kombat Cinematic Universe, though, is a little different.
McQuoid’s film provides some background of the classic Mortal Kombat tale, while also indulging in its modern-day continuation. To make a long story short, the rivalry upon which the franchise is predicated starts in 17th century Japan, when Sub Zero (
