Jeff Zimmerman: Isbel’s defense is MLB ready and he has a line drive swing with 25 SB potential. He’s hit a ball 110 MPH, so he’s not devoid of power. Think Whit Merrifield but a lower batting average. Victor Robles but fewer steals.

Dallas Sees an Influx of Expensive Restaurants as Pandemic Winds Down

You can sense the excitement in the Dallas restaurant industry: Patio weather is here, thousands of people are getting vaccinated every day and dining rooms are beginning to welcome back customers who’ve previously stuck to takeout.
The excitement isn’t limited to current restaurants. In 2021, we’re poised to see a boom of new openings, and many of them are going to be very expensive.
Tasting menus are in again. At Monarch, in downtown’s National Building, diners can choose to sign up for a $290 tasting of “the best our menu has to offer.” On Greenville Avenue, two new tasting spots will debut this summer: Shoyo from longtime Nobu sushi chef Jimmy Park and Carte Blanche by married chefs Amy and Casey La Rue. Casey has worked for Michelin-starred legends Daniel Boulud, Joel Robuchon and Thomas Keller.

Salt Bae's Super-Expensive Steakhouse Nusr-Et Comes to Dallas, and We Don't Care

OK, fine: Downtown Dallas has a new steakhouse, Nusr-Et, which charges up to $1,000 to grill you a steak and then theatrically bounce too much salt off somebody’s body and onto your meal. Are you happy?
Nusr-Et is a global chain of 18 ultra-expensive steakhouses in cities like New York, Dubai and Istanbul, which has been greeted with hostility wherever it goes, and not just for the prices. But about those prices: The cheeseburger is $30, steak “spaghetti” is $80, vegetable sides are all $19 and a piece of baklava for dessert is $25. A mustard-marinated beef tenderloin runs $140, and the tomahawk rib-eye, which is called #SALTBAE, is $275.

After a Year of Pandemic Pain, Some Dallas Restaurateurs Are Ready to Get Political

On March 8, 2020, a crowd converged on Four Corners Brewing Co. for a festival dedicated to Filipino food. Popular, rising-star pop-up businesses run by Filipino-American chefs with day jobs  served more than a thousand customers that day. At 2 p.m., the wait for a bowl of noodles was 50 minutes, and another line was keeping people standing for an hour.
It felt like every food lover in Dallas was there. In one line, I chatted with
Texas Monthly taco editor José Ralat, and at the ice cream booth,
D Magazine dining critic Eve Hill-Agnus worked serving scoops.
None of us knew this would be the last time the Dallas food community partied together. Two days later, Dallas County reported its first known case of COVID-19. On March 17, the county’s dining rooms and bars closed by public order.

In East Dallas, Invasion Serves Massive Sandwiches with a Generous Spirit

Invasion was supposed to be primarily a sandwich restaurant, with occasional side gigs doing good for the community. Instead, in its first year this tiny East Dallas diner became a hub for goodwill, volunteering and feeding the needy.
All that charity started the day before Invasion opened. On Monday, March 16, chef-owner Airric Heidelberg gathered his team for a pep talk before “soft opening” began the following day and they started offering sandwiches, bowls and chicken tenders to the public.
“I’m giving a speech to the team, getting them ready, and I paused,” Heidelberg recalls. “The TV was on, everyone was staring at the TV, and it said ‘shutdown.’ I stopped the meeting.”

Top BBQ Spot Zavala's in Grand Prairie Temporarily Closed by Storm Damabe

Then came Thursday.
“We went to check up to do prep,” Zavala says. “I go in there and the first thing I see is water dripping. On the last day! I didn’t even know that we had pipes in the ceiling.”
But the 1967-constructed building had pipes in the ceiling, and they had burst. Water poured out of light fixtures. HVAC systems were damaged, $4,300 of food was ruined. And, most obviously, there was a great big hole in the ceiling, which Zavala jokingly called a “new sunroof” in an Instagram post.
Now the barbecue spot is closed for repairs, with a reopening date uncertain but likely to be in April.

Remembering Joe Distelheim, a Hardball Times Mainstay

March 1, 2021
Baseball lost several legends in 2020, and our little corner of the baseball world was not spared. Joe Distelheim, a long-time editor and writer at
The Hardball Times, passed away on December 30 from Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He was 78 years old. News of his passing only recently reached those of us who worked with him at
THT.
Joe left an indelible mark on
The Hardball Times during his extensive tenure there. Indeed, his tenure may have been the longest of anyone associated with the site: records going back that far are sketchy, but he worked for
