The Sachs Program announces 2021 arts grants

Share
The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation, in its latest grant cycle, will fund 25 arts projects with $177,000 in funding. The grants support, among many other themes and explorations, work that asks bold questions about speculative futures, translates the stories of frontline workers during the pandemic into theater, and spotlights marginalized voices that might otherwise go unheard.
“With our annual grants, we’re always thinking about how we are supporting marginalized communities, thinking about balancing our concrete aims in doing that, and being responsive through calls for supporting Black and AAPI artists,” says Chloe Reison, associate director of The Sachs Program. “And I do feel that, with those particular calls especially, we are reaching more people and that’s contributing to the diversity of our more general pool.”

This spring, the Graduate School Alumni Association sponsored the first of the new Alumni Conversations program, with the inaugural talk featuring the History of Art Department.
The Zoom session was hosted by GSAA board members and department alumni Carmen Bambach ’81, ’88 PhD, and Stephanie Grilli ’80 PhD, and was spearheaded by department chair Tim Barringer. It introduced alumni to current students, new faculty members, ongoing curricular initiatives, and to the recently opened facilities for object study and laboratory of conservation at West Campus.
“One of the aims of the doctoral program is to ensure that whatever their final research topics, students gain exposure to art of a wide range of media and periods and to a spectrum of methodologies of approaches that ranges widely across time and across global geographies,” Barringer said. “We are committed to the idea that art history is a global discipline.”

Penn Libraries receives gift of works by renowned photographer Arthur Tress

Share
The University of Pennsylvania Libraries today announced the gift of works by the renowned American contemporary photographer Arthur Tress. Given by an anonymous donor, this outstanding collection – part of which has already been appraised at $4.2 million—joins another recent gift of Tress photography given to the Penn Libraries by J. Patrick Kennedy and Patricia Kennedy, parents of a 1997 Penn graduate, for a combined 2,500 photographic prints.
Together these collections document Tress’s diverse and fascinating career and represent the largest collection of Tress photographic prints in the United States. In 2018, Tress, among the most original artists of his generation, gave the Penn Libraries his collection of Japanese illustrated books, which served as inspiration for his own artistic vision.
