the work that you have done more to, i always find you existed this incredible interception of deep pragmatism, like you sort of know what's going on for real. but also with the lighting and a dose of hope and aspiration and i wonder how you are able to hold those two things side by side. i >> think that my hiv status has informed everything. once i decided that it was up to me to keep making my dreams come true -- and that carries over to everything. no matter what the challenges are with the obstacle is, with the defeat or failure quote unquote might be, there is always something. there is always a hopeful somewhere. focus on that. foot put the energy on that. keep driving towards that. it's going to get brighter. keep going.

end of the day, it's more important that you do your job as a global citizen. >> you know, going back to arthur ashe, although he was a prominent activist for racial injustice abroad, he was very reluctant and very quiet to publicly share his hiv status. why do you think that was? why was it so much harder to speak up about it in, i think it was back in the 1980s. >> yeah, so, he finds out in 1988, he believes he contracted it in 1983 and what he was saying is that he was trying to protect his family. so, at that time, and many people probably don't remember, but if you had aids, i was not only a death warrant, but people treated you awful. and he's trying to protect his family, he's got a young daughter at that time. and he believed that when he came out, if he ever came out, which he did in 1992, that there would be a lot of backlash. not just towards him, but towards his daughter. so, he was really trying to protect his family. >> how heavy of a burden do you

in the late 1980s, the aids epidemic was affecting millions around the world. curry had been diagnosed with hiv in 1987, and by1991 it had progressed to aids. john curry returned to the west midlands and spent his final years with his mother, rita, before passing away at the age of 1m. john's openness to his hiv status really set the groundwork for normalising what hiv as we know today is about. obviously, we lost millions of our community and people worldwide to this horrible virus. i did have an uncle who was gay who was banished from the family when he was 16 years old, and he passed away of hiv when i was 16, 17 years old and it broke my heart. i didn't quite understand what was going on at that point because he was really never spoken about within the confines of our immediate family, but i remember being absolutely heartbroken hearing of his passing because he died without knowing the love of his own mother.
