cnn newsroom. >> it is monday, january 15th, 3:00 a.m. in iowa where voters are just hours away from officially kicking off the 2024 race for the white house. >> the state is home to the first in the nation presidential caucuses. iowa republicans will have to brave some brutal weather to make their voices heard with snow cf falling across the stat. the state's republican chair is predicting a robust turnout despite the cold. >> the latest polling shows donald trump with a very comfortable lead. and all the hopefuls spent sunday crisscross ing the state looking to drum up last-minute support from undecided voters. teams have been following the top candidates in iowa and c kristen holmes was with donald
factor not on the ballot. let's go to kristen holmes just south of des moines. so what is the trump campaign's closing message to iowans tonight? >> anderson, donald trump in his only, vent of the weekend, spoke for nearly two hours and had a very long and multi-layered message. one was airing of grievances. two was attacking nikki haley and three was stressing how important it was to show up and caucus on monday. listen to just some of what he said. >> if you want to save america from crooked joe biden, you must go caucus tomorrow. the very first step. you can't sit home. if you are sick as a dog, you say i've got to make it. even if you vote and then pass away, it's worth it. i don't think -- get up! get up! you get up and you vote.
in the hawkeye state for the final stretch of this campaign, speaking directly to voters and candidates themselves. here's what ron desantis and nikki haley have told me in the last 12 hours as they make their closing arguments. >> donald trump is the party of the washington, d.c., establishment. they lined up behind him. i'm the candidate that would be a change agent in washington, d.c. i like that contrast. >> i'm a conservative governor. i was a conservative ambassador. i'm going to be a conservative president. at the end of the day, i'm going to treat people with respect, i'm going to overcommunicate everything happening and i'm going to focus on lifting up everybody, not just a select few. >> i want to bring in my great panel of reporters who are also here trudging through the snow and the cold weather here. jeff zeleny and kristin holmes, both of cnn, seth herndon of "the new york times" is finally here. >> we're finally here.
a personality, a narcissistic sociopath and is not going to let anyone else win without trying to destroy them. i don't know how this -- i don't see what the end game is for any of the challengers to donald trump frankly. he's not going to let anybody else win. >> yeah. and david, to that point, one of the things that happened earlier today was trump went after vivek ramaswamy of all people for the first time. and our kristen holmes was explaining on this program that part of it was because he didn't like that ramaswamy was taking some little digs at trump here and there. that kind of gets to a point how this has been such an unusual cycle and these nontrump candidates have really bent over backwards to not go after him. the front-runner in this race, which is just so unusual, it just doesn't happen. it happened this time. >> yeah, it happened this time. look at one of the races that was really important to these primaries. and that is the nikki haley situation.
and day, eight days. so you just have to put on that warm coat and get out there. i said it to one of our people and they said oh, that's good news. i said why is it good? because their people don't have the enthusiasm to vote and my people will walk on glass. they don't care, right? right? >> our kristen holmes is in des moines right now. kristen, what are you hearing from your sources inside the trump campaign? i should note to our viewers, it is negative 7 degrees where you are in des moines. i'll stop talking so you can get through this quicker. what can you tell us? >> yeah, it is very cold, jim. got a little gust of any in my face and it is not pleasant. we are waiting to hear from former president trump. he's doing a video rally from a hotel in iowa tonight. it is not open press. just something that is streamed. but what we are waiting to hear from his team is the de mdes
cnn's kristen holmes is in iowa with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, victor and amara. donald trump and his team's message is twofold, one is get out and caucus no matter what, ignore the weather, and the other is to temper down expectations. they know polls have had him up leading by a margin of 30 points, they do not believe the margin will be that big. senior advisers continue to say anything over a 12-point win would be a historic win. you have to remember that a win is a win, but what his team is trying to do is set the momentum for the primary season. and also to offset any momentum that some of his rivals might have. we know they are concerned about nikki haley, particularly in new hampshire, both the campaign and the super pac are spending $4.5 million advertising against haley already, particularly on immigration. now, it was clear during his tele-rally that haley is still on donald trump's mind. take a listen to what he said. >> i know nicki very well.
look like in the rural areas especially, where people have to travel a great distance, fred. >> right. no one knows and that's part of the excitement of it all. eva mckend, thank you so much. hopefully people will be really careful as they venture out because these are potentially very dangerous conditions. we have a team of correspondents covering all of the campaigns. let's start with kristen holmes following former president donald trump. minutes ago, he was talking. what's happening now? >> reporter: he just stepped off the stage here in indianola. it was a packed event, the only event he was having over the weekend. he's doing a couple smaller things but those are unplanned rallies after the weather caused him to cancel three of the four rallies he had planned. and you can really feel the enthusiasm in the room. now, as for what donald trump's messaging was, one part of it was don't be complacent. show up and vote. this is something we have heard from him time and time again. we know that he is privately very concerned about the weather. the whole point of what they are
