Changing Faces of Immigrants Crossing through Ciudad Juárez and into the United States: Reflections on Migrants, Culture, and Crime

In recent years, unauthorized US border crossings by non-Mexican Latin American nationals have
increased significantly. This article examines the impact that these new migrants have had on Ciudad
Juárez, Mexico. It focuses especially on the period immediately preceding the COVID-19 pandemic to the
present. Since 2018, Central Americans, Cubans, Haitians and Venezuelans have passed through Juárez
in record numbers, and many have settled at least temporarily there. Through ethnographic
observations and interviews the author analyzes the impact the new migrants have had on border society and how
Juarenses have responded to each of the immigrant groups. Acts of charity and generosity toward the
migrants are common, but so too are xenophobia and hostility, especially from local politicians, tabloid
journalists, local law enforcement, and members of organized crime. As large numbers of migrants,
especially Venezuelans at present, have flooded into downtown Juárez, the impact has been
transformative to local business and street culture and led to brewing social tensions on the border that
may worsen in the future.

Marie Martine grows worried about what do to next after a failed attempt to be allowed to remain in the U.S.
Their paths never crossed but, in March, they each made what they hoped would be their last leg: They surrendered to Border Patrol agents, one in El Paso, the other in Del Rio.
They met remarkably different fates.
Agents in Del Rio gave Jeanniton, 23, a “credible fear” screening that put her on a legal path to seek asylum — she acknowledged she was afraid to return to Haiti — and they released her to travel freely to a friend's apartment in West Palm Beach, Florida.

in august of 1996, osama bin laden declared war on the united states. literally issued something he called a declaration of war against the americans. by that point u.s. authorities considered bin laden responsible for a hotel bomb in yemen in 1992 that was apparently targeting u.s. troops, but it killed two tourists instead. authorities in saudi arabia considered bin laden responsible by then for another bombing targeting a u.s. military training facility in saudi arabia. that bomb killed seven people. 1996 comes bin laden's declaration of war. two years later in 1998 he issues another anti-american declaration. this one saying that all muslims anywhere in the world have it as a duty to attack americans. later that year on august 7, 1998, bin laden bombs went off at the u.s. embassies at kenya and tanzania wounding thousands of people and killing more than 200. two years after that, the bombing of the "uss coal" killed 17 american sailors. by the time the september 11th attacks happened, osama bin laden had a big resume of terror attacks attributed to him.
