Public defenders in Hennepin County condemn traffic stops that target Black drivers

Hennepin County public defenders, joined by a state legislator, rallied in downtown Minneapolis on Friday to condemn the disproportionate number of Black drivers stopped by police for minor infractions compared to white motorists. About 50 people showed up for the rally on the steps of the Hennepin County courthouse to protest these traffic stops, which many say criminalizes "Driving while ...

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A man who was apparently angry over the death of Daunte Wright has been charged with shooting at a St. Paul police officer in an ambush.
Prosecutors charged 24-year-old Jamoni Raekwon Blackstone of North St. Paul with attempted murder this week, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Saturday.
According to a criminal complaint, the officer was watching stores for potential looting or burglaries on April 13, two days after now-former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter shot the 20-year-old Wright during a traffic stop. Potter is white. Wright was Black. The officer said someone opened fire on his car, forcing him to drive out of the area. The officer wasn't injured.

Eleven days ago, Daunte Wright and his girlfriend,
Alayna Albrecht-Payton, were pulled over by former Brooklyn Center Police Department
Kim Potter. During the encounter, Potter shot and killed the unarmed 20-year-old Black Minnesotan as his girlfriend watched in horror. The brutal attack that killed Potter and injured Albrecht-Payton took place just a few miles from where
George Floyd was killed 11 months beforehand and it triggered protests that were just as important. Wright has become a household name and communities around the country are waiting to see if Potter will stand trial. Meanwhile, the Wright family mourns the loss of their son, cousin, brother, father and much more. Today, the Wright family is preparing to do something it hoped it wouldn't have to do for another 50 or 60 years, lay Daunte to rest.

Leonard Pitts Jr.: 'A riot is the language of the unheard'

‘The anguish we are suffering cannot translate into violence.”
So said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in the wake of yet another police killing of yet another unarmed African-American man. The sentiment was altogether fitting and proper, especially given his city was the epicenter of a national uprising last year after one of its police officers — Derek Chauvin, found guilty Tuesday on all three charges brought against him — killed a handcuffed, unarmed and unresisting black man named George Floyd by pushing a knee into his neck for nine and a half minutes.
That captured-on-video killing stunned the world by its nonchalant cruelty, igniting both vigorous protests and spasms of violence — fed-up people, opportunistic leeches and even far-right provocateurs all meeting in the streets to make war. The nation endured long nights of rioting: the shattering of glass, the wailing of sirens, the looting of merchandise, the burning of businesses.

your honor, the state of Minnesota rest mr nelson, anything further. The stage is now set for the long awaited closing arguments in the trial of Derek chauvin and the longer awaited jury deliberations, notably jurors didn't ever hear testimony from Derek chauvin, who until thursday only spoke through the past in the form of body camera video presented before the guy down. He was was oh going crazy, wasn't going now for the moment, I wouldn't go in the back of the but confirmed in court, jurors wouldn't hear testimony from him in this trial. I will invoke my Fifth Amendment privilege today, outside of chauvin's decision, a lot of court centered on a familiar face, the return of pulmonologist Dr martin Tobin, who prosecutors used as a rebuttal witness to testimony that carbon monoxide could have played a role in George Floyd's death, Pointing to a blood oxygen saturation report that showed George Floyd's was at 98 when he died. Does that tell us anything whatsoever About what the carbon monoxide content could have been at a maximum? Yes, it does. If the hemoglobin is saturated at 98%, it tells you all there was for everything else is 2%. And so the maximum amount of carbon Carbon monoxide would be 2%. Tobin was among the over 40 witnesses that recalled total in this trial. From those steps away from George Floyd on May 25 2020. Mr. Regan, wait a minute from Yeah, I can't deal helpless to law enforcement on the use of force that day. Was this a trained Minneapolis Police Department? Defensive tactics technique. It is not. I felt that Derek chauvin was justified, it was acting with objective reasonableness and doctors on the cause of death. There's no evidence to suggest he would have died that night except for the interactions with law enforcement. Now a process almost a year in the making is just days away. As a dozen jurors have a weekend to prepare for what will be one of the most significant decisions in Minneapolis history. If I were you, I would plan for long and hold for short.

Tensions rise in US amid police shootings, Chauvin trial

By Jordan Williams - 04/17/21 10:03 PM EDT

Tensions have increased in the U.S. over the past week amid new reports of fatal police shootings and in anticipation of the verdict in former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin's murder trial.
Ongoing protests broke out across the country this week over police shootings of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, and Adam Toledo, a 13-year-old boy.
In addition, cities are preparing for unrest as the nation waits for the verdict of Chauvin, who faces multiple charges in the killing of George Floyd, a Black man who died in police custody in May of last year.

Amber Ruffin sings through the pain of another truly terrible week in America

Amber’s back! After taking a little time off, Ruffin and trusty side-man Tarik Davis caught up on everything that’s been going on in the country since they took a bit of a break. And, sure, there were some restorative laughs to be had at the expense of plummeting GOP star and seriously alleged sex criminal (and Nazi-chum) Matt Gaetz, plus an extended monologue bit about The Rock’s apparent seriousness about a presidential bid that allowed Amber to write herself a Peacock-subsidized shot of hooch on the air. But, as Ruffin confided to Davis, her week back at work was undeniably “shitty.” You know, with, as Ruffin dutifully ran down, the ongoing Minneapolis Police Department officer Derek Chauvin trial (for murdering an unarmed Black man), the beating and pepper-spraying of U.S. Army officer Caron Nazario for no reason by white Windsor, Virginia police officers, the “piece of shit officer (Kim Potter) who shot that 20-year-old,” and the caught-on-camera killing of 13-year-old Adam Toledo by a cop named Eric Stillman in Chicago.

Kimberly A. Potter, the white Brooklyn Center police officer who resigned after fatally shooting Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old black man who resisted arrest during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, was formally charged Wednesday with second-degree manslaughter after days of protests and riots.
"Certain occupations carry an immense responsibility and none more so than a sworn police officer," Imran Ali, Washington County assistant criminal division chief and director of the Major Crime Unit, said in a statement cited by KSTP Wednesday. "With that responsibility comes a great deal of discretion and accountability. We will vigorously prosecute this case and intend to prove that Officer Potter abrogated her responsibility to protect the public when she used her firearm rather than her Taser. Her action caused the unlawful killing of Mr. Wright and she must be held accountable.”

The former officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright made her first court appearance over Zoom today.
There was no plea in today's hearing and a judge said Kim Potter is not allowed to use, possess or transport firearms.
Potter is charged with second-degree manslaughter in what police described as an accidental shooting during a traffic stop.
Activists want a more serious murder charge filed and Wright's family wants a conviction, but says justice is unattainable.

'It's jaw-dropping': Racine County police leaders 'shocked' by Daunte Wright's death | Crime and Courts

Wright
Mount Pleasant’s police chief called the killing of Daunte Wright “a catastrophic mistake, a disaster.” A Racine police sergeant said it was “a terrible tragedy.” Nearly identical statements from the chiefs of the Sturtevant and Waterford police departments said they were “shocked” of the death of Daunte Wright during an attempted arrest in Minnesota.
Wright, a 20-year-old black man, was killed Sunday in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, a city of 30,600 that shares a border with Minneapolis, bringing large protests back to the Twin Cities even as ex-Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin remains on trial for the May 25, 2020, death of George Floyd.

San Antonians will have a chance to properly pay their respects to Daunte Wright Sr., the 20-year-old Black man killed by police in Minnesota last weekend.
Digna Candelario, a San Antonio resident and mother of one, announced plans to host a peaceful gathering at Travis Park for Wright, who was shot and killed by former officer Kim Potter during a traffic stop. The event, which Candelario said will be a joint rally and memorial, will also be a chance for locals to mourn Marvin Scott, a Black man who died in police custody last month.
