Opening night kicks off with the premieres including the
Summer of Soul documentary from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

Making his directorial debut, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson takes viewers to the Harlem Cultural Festival, which took place three months before Woodstock in 1969. The event hosted over 300,000 people and featured Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, and Nina Simone. However, no one has seen the footage since it’s been “stored in a basement for 50 years,” according to Sundance. Until now.

Exploring the worth of our memories and how they link in our brains can be exciting, also terrifying. This film wants us to think about what these memories mean, but more importantly, how these memories can be gamified, automated, simulated, disseminated to—anyone. Here’s another wake up call to remind us where we could head if we don’t hit pause to review.

The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t just affected the way we watch the Sundance Film Festival — online from home, rather than trudging around Park City — but what we watch, as the coronavirus has become a topic of some of the festival’s films.

On January 23, 2020—the opening night of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival—the "novel coronavirus" outbreak in Wuhan, China, was still a secondary news story in the United States, with only one confirmed case in this country. While attendance was down a bit—approximately 4 percent less, according to Sundance Institute CFO Betsy Wallace—things still felt somewhat normal, with "normal" in late-January Park City being a crush of people in confined spaces, enjoying one of the preeminent international film festivals in the world.
Plenty has changed in the intervening year, as the pandemic raged through the U.S. and throughout the world. For film festivals like Sundance, that meant dealing with the realities of public-health needs, including cancellation of some 2020 festivals while others moved to a digital, virtual format. And it soon became clear in this tumult that Sundance 2021 probably wouldn't look anything like Sundance 2020.
