In 2015, a few days before Christmas, 24 Syrian refugee families were waiting in a wind-battered port, west of Glasgow, for a tiny ferry to take them to a remote island where they would begin life anew. Fleeing a civil war that had already displaced 12 million of their countrymen (over half Syria’s population), they had been granted asylum by the Scottish government.

Cannes Film Festival, the film was instead listed as part of its Cannes Label program due to the festival's cancellation during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Toronto International Film Festival quickly took up the world premiere bragging rights, only for it to be shown as part of their virtual festival since lockdown was also in effect in Canada.
From then on, Limbo went from festival to festival (including the BFI London Film Festival) garnering an exclusive, yet enthusiastic fanbase who were lucky enough to catch the film at one of its screenings.

Limbo — Scottish director Ben Sharrock's comic drama about misfit refugees struggling with life on a remote Scottish island — is set for a theatrical release on April 30, 2021.
After nabbing two BAFTA nominations for best film and best debut feature,
Limbo will get a limited release at the multiplex. The film centers on Omar, a young Syrian musician waiting to hear whether the British government will grant him asylum.
Sharrock spent time working for an NGO in refugee camps in southern Algeria and living in Damascus in 2009 shortly before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. There he formed a network of friends whose personal stories inspired the film.
