Their scepticism was warranted. After all, Dogecoin is a joke — a digital currency started in 2013 by a pair of programmers who decided to spoof the cryptocurrency craze by creating their own virtual money based on a meme about Doge, a talking Shiba Inu puppy. And investing money in obscure cryptocurrencies has, historically, been akin to tossing it onto a bonfire.

A Dogecoin investor who claims to have gambled his entire life savings on the token, becoming an overnight millionaire when its price suddenly rocketed, chose not to cash out at its peak—and is now back down to six figures after the market plunged.
But 33-year-old Los Angeles resident Jaysn Prolifiq—legally known as Glauber Contessoto—told
Newsweek he does not regret hanging on to his tokens, even as their value drops again.
Financial experts warned others against taking a high-stakes risk like Prolifiq's.

Bitcoin may receive indirect support from an unlikely source—Dogecoin.
Seeking Alpha, a crowd-sourced content service for financial markets, offers an intriguing view of Dogecoin, the parody cryptocurrency launched in 2013, and its relevance to Bitcoin.
"Every buyer of Dogecoin is (perhaps unwittingly) making a statement about the legitimacy of the Bretton Woods world order," the company said. "The zoomer generation is having a good laugh while exploring the intersection of central banking and technological disruption."
In July 1944, delegates from 44 nations met at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire and pegged the value of the U.S. dollar to gold.
