Jesús Luzardo’s early exploits with the A’s make the left-hander seem older to manager Bob Melvin.

“Experience-wise, it feels like he’s 25,” Melvin said. “We have thrown probably more at him at an early age than maybe anybody since I’ve been here.
“The reason is because he’s a really talented guy. I said in the offseason my expectation of Jesús is to be a top-of-the-rotation starter, and that probably starts this year.”

A.J. Puk might play on the A’s pitching staff this season. But the left-hander, who had shoulder surgery in September, started spring training on a positive note.

Bob Melvin said Puk “looked great” in a bullpen session Wednesday during the team’s first spring workout. Puk, the A’s 2016 first-round pick, had the shoulder “clean-out” after recurring discomfort kept him from pitching in a game in 2020.
