worse. no, i know. and there's no way to say that without yourself sounding biased, obviously. to say i'm telling you it's both sides but also them, but i really do think that's true. and i want to give one example that was really sort of front of mind today of one side sort of being worse, being less tethered in reality, and that was because today was jobs day. it's a big deal in the business press and even in the media generally because it's the day the bureau of labor statistics releases all the job stats for the previous month. and it was a good jobs narrative. there was 266,000 new jobs that beat expectations by quite a bit. the unemployment rate ticked down to 3.5%. that's a 50-year low. it's good a lot of people are working. it's good people are working. we're happy ability that. now, there are a lot of places i think if you look into the data, if you sort of sift through it
recession where the jobs narrative overtook the climate narrative. but the lesson is that there are oil companies, big oil companies in the coalition that was working to pass that carbon price. the reason is they have a great business. it's incredibly durable and incredibly profitable. what they want is price certainty. they want to be able to plan, and they're willing to accept a carbon price, some of them, if they have to if it's made clear that it's inevitable politically because they can still run a great business and still believe in the viability of the oil and gas business. they provide a different story in public, but in private they're planning for this price. so the politics -- we see these politics as impossible and captured by lobbyists and frozen. the reality is in 2009 we as a country were that close to doing it. >> we're going to be that close again. >> we have to -- >> here's the deeper question, right? i think this structures our conversation about fracking as well, which is when we look at the short term it's reduced
that's why this is going to be a really bad election for the democrats. this immigration debate is going to be part of that because it feeds into this animosity that people have towards illegal immigrants because they feel they're taking away jobs. i think that for holder to do this lawsuit is a disaster for the democrats politically because it feeds into the job narrative and the atlantic jobs narrative. i think republicans are going to take advantage of this and do very well in the election. >> what do you make, jack? the federal lawsuit, was it a mistake or a move that really addresses reform? >> it addresses reform. i don't care whether this is popular or not. i don't care whether the majority of americans think this is right or not. the civil rights movement would have gone down in flames if we were talking about popularity. it's something that must be done. the obama administration is making a hard call, a good call in this case. and you know what is this they may pay the price in the short term but i would argue history will be on their side. >> rand paul, he's supposed to be a man of the people, an
