Ellen Marie Bennett was a line cook in 2012 when she started her apron business with $500.
Hedley & Bennett is now a multi-million dollar company outfitting chefs like Martha Stewart and Matt Horn.
Five takeaways from Bennet's new book can help leaders avoid micromanaging as their businesses grow.
This article is part of a series called "Secrets of Success," which examines specific leadership tips from prominent business leaders.
Ellen Marie Bennett was a line cook at Bäco Mercat in Los Angeles when she plunged into entrepreneurship on a whim. She'd excitedly promised her boss, Chef Josef Centeno, she'd make 40 aprons for his staff in four weeks. The only problem was that she'd never designed or made an apron before.

A New All-Day Italian Destination Gives Even More to the Downtown Scene

Il Fiore
Are Angelenos witnessing the renewed rise of Downtown LA’s dining scene? Perhaps, given the amount of movement currently happening in the area, from sky-high open-air hangouts to big-name chefs reviving long-awaited plans for rooftop hangouts. The latest addition to the landscape is Il Fiore, a restaurant focusing on flavorful Italian fare in the heart of the Financial District.
The new Il Fiore quietly began serving last week from its ground floor space at 819 S. Flower Street, the base of the O Hotel. The restaurant’s unique setup means there’s actually two chefs on site: Joel Stovall (who worked for Josef Centeno for years, most recently at Orsa & Winston), and Clay Cassis, who has worked at Vespertine and Bestia. Together the pair is turning out everything from daily breakfast and lunch for the hotel, with options from granola and avocado toast to house-smoked lox and focaccia de recco. Dinner is a more robust turn, featuring classics like cacio e pepe and braised short ribs along with vegetables roasted in nori butter and a pork cheek papardelle with papaya and heirloom tomatoes. Stovall and Cassis will even be growing some of their own ingredients from a nearby garden, and foraging for others around the region.

Guy Fieri Launches Flavortown Kitchen in Los Angeles as Delivery-Only Restaurant

Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Kitchen
Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives host Guy Fieri is doing what all worthy celebrities do these days in the food space: open a delivery-only restaurant that promises to expand their brands while serving mostly unremarkable food. Seriously, has anyone ever tweeted or Instagramed an extraordinary experience from a celebrity cloud kitchen restaurant? Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Kitchen aptly serves some of the celebrity chef’s favorite dishes, from bacon mac n’ cheeseburgers and jalapeño pig poppers to “The Crazy Cuban Sandwich,” so maybe the TV host’s food can change minds about the potential of delivery-only restaurants.

Winston Pies has secured a new location in Santa Monica, with plans to formalize its new facility on Ocean Avenue sometime in early March. Owner Brianna Abrams’ popular pie shop, which first opened in Brentwood in 2017 before expanding to West Third Street, is taking over the long-dormant former Joan’s on Third offshoot at 1705 Ocean Avenue, and will use the much larger facility to expand its customer base and delivery range, and to greatly grow its production volume and nationwide shipping.

Whether you’re always on the hunt for great booze-free drinks or you’re simply giving your liver a break after a year of drinking heavily—2020 was tough on all of us, no judgment—some of L.A.’s best bars are making it easy to have a dry January.
Last year was unsustainable for so many of the city’s favorite cocktail bars, and while many of our favorite go-to spots for alcohol-free cocktails and creative sippers are either closed or not offering their full menus, a number of spots across town still have you covered, whether you’re looking for nonalcoholic local craft beer, some of the city’s best sodas, or a gin-less cocktail from one of L.A.’s top gin bars. Here’s where to find alcohol-free drinks this January.

LA Restaurants and Chefs That Stepped Up for Their Communities in 2020

LA Restaurants and Chefs That Stepped Up for Their Communities in 2020
Restaurants were an essential part of helping communities this past year

2020 will be the year that upended the restaurant industry. It’s difficult to talk about the year in review when everything changed, when people and businesses suffered during the pandemic. In light of the challenging year for everyone in Los Angeles, we asked food writers and industry folks about restaurants they thought stepped up for their communities and stakeholders.
Mona Holmes, Eater LA Reporter
Post & Beam’s chef/owner John Cleveland — and numerous South LA restaurants — worked with Councilman Marqueece Harris Dawson to prepare meals for seniors from March until June. The program ended June 12, but Clevelend extended the program by fundraising within the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw community. I can’t think of another restaurant so committed to its community like Post & Beam, which also comes with Cleveland’s friendly demeanor.
