>> dead cat bounce. don't tell meat ball we'll watch for jerome powell's testimony later. juliana, the united kingdom inflation rate hit another 40-year high as food and energy prices continue to rise. it's inflation we keep saying a global issue, not just here in the united states. through much of europe battling it as well. how are consumers and businesses there in the united kingdom reacting to this country's cost of living crisis? >> well, you know, john, you talk about inflation as a global issue. that is absolutely true. but here in the uk, we're also seeing signs of domestic inflationary pressures building. the inflation for europe came in at 9.1% from may, up from 9% in april. it was in line with economist's expectations but it is poised to get worst. economists are expecting inflation to hit double digits by autumn. in materials of consumers and businesses and how they're reacting, there's certainly a lot of focus on wage discussions at the moment.

raise the jar to all five layers. raise the jar to the best gelato... you've ever tasted. talenti. raise the jar. time now for business. for that let's bring in cnbc's julianna tatelbaum who joins us live from london. good morning, juliana. it was a volatile session yesterday on wall street, but two consecutive days of gains. what should we make of this possible trend? >> well, john, it was a choppy session yesterday. ultimately the s&p 500 did end about 1% higher, but we were down as much as 1% shortly after the open yesterday. we also saw a lot of action in fixed income markets. u.s. ten-year treasury yield everyone is watching very closely crossed back above the 3% mark yesterday. it has bounced around since then, but that was a notable feature of trade yesterday. consumer discretionary was the underperformer of the day.
