2of8Fred Marziano, 50, a Marin County Sheriff s deputy, poses for a portrait on Thursday, January 18, 2021, in Petaluma, Calif. Marziano got COVID-19 last March and the symptoms never went away. He was an athletic guy, and now he uses a walker that he named Wally. He got sick at the same time as Matt Willis, the Marin County public health director, who s 54. Willis returned to work in April. Marziano just announced his retirement. So it s been a long journey. March 19 was when I first got sick. And I went through the range of all the normal effects of coronavirus at the very beginning, the first month or so. But then we noticed that things kept persisting - shortness of breath, the cough, dizziness, fatigue, you name it, I was still facing it. And the biggest thing for me was the cough and the shortness of breath. And those are the two main things that I want to overcome as time goes on, but those are the main lingering ones that are still bothering me, Marziano said. It s been a whirlwind of emotions. At first I was scared because I got the virus cause I was one of the very first ones. I was the twenty third person up here to get it and nobody knew anything about it. Honestly I was very scared because I didn t know what to expect. Marziano said he would visit the hospital and be treated, but sent home because they didn t want me there at the hospital. As time progressed it moved on from being scared of the virus per se to just okay, how am I going to live with all this or am I going to have to live with this and what are we going to do to fix it? And the answers that I m always getting are we don t know. I honestly don t know what to expect, Marziano said.Yalonda M. James / The ChronicleShow MoreShow Less
