speaker? >> he's making a bet that the motion to vacate, the threat to dump eliminate out of -- dump him out of the speaker's office yet again is something the rebels don't actually want to do because they saw the chaos the last time around. they saw the damage it can do to the party. he's making a bet that's a lot of grousing. we'll see if that's true. i suspect it is in this case because i think there's a recognition among those rebels that if you roll the dice again, you could get an outcome that they're going to like a lot less than speaker mike johnson. the last time around, remember, democrats and the problem solvers caucus came right up to the edge of saying that we're going to step in and get a more moderate speaker that we're comfortable with. if that happened this time around, that suddenly means they do not have the power that they have over mike johnson. >> but kara, what johnson is talking about, which is basically making a deal that's going to have a lot of republican opposition and he's going to need democratic votes
not already won the case on appeal. a more repeat appeal to pause the trial ended in defeat. kara scannell joins us with more on what happened in court. kara, what was it like in court today? >> this was the closing moment in the case and was hear for opening lgz and again today for closings. initially the judge didn't allow him to speak so he wasn't going to speak. after all the attorneys finished their closing arguments he said to the judge can the former president please speak. the judge gave him the remaining five or six minutes of the day where he said you can talk but you have to work within the ground rules is talk about the evidence and the law and trump didn't. he proem claimed he was an innocent man and being purseicated. he said this is political witch hunt. what happened here, sir, is a fraud on me and he continued to go on and attack the investigation. the judge gave him a cue he had
>> reporter: so after trump's team gave their closing statements then it was the new york attorney general's team. they outlined to the judge trump had committed fraud on his financial statements for ten years beginning in 2011, and they argued the judge should find him and his adult sons liable. wolf? >> kara, what is the new york attorney general saying about all this, and what's the bottom line as far as what's at stake for trump? >> reporter: well, the attorneys in court had argued -- made their argument on the law. and what one of the state attorney generals had said is the court should infer trump acted with intent to defraud arguing about his apartment that was overvalued that they acknowledged was a mistake, but the attorney general said that was screaming evidence of intent to defraud. after the court wrap asked all was said and done, the new york attorney came out to address the cameras. here's what she said. >> this case has never been
property near wall street to make those remarks again. at 2:30 will of course bring them to you, as they happen. >> certainly we will be awaiting much more ahead, a lot of interesting stuff already happening there as we heard from kara, she was in the courtroom. i want to bring in cnn senior political analyst -- cnn legal analyst carrie cordero, we see this, carry the. trump, even when he was facing legal liability, he sees political opportunity. he certainly took it in that monologue he gave in court. what do you think of what he said and what you've heard, so far today? >> it is interesting that the judge did apparently allow him to have some statement. his attorney gave the actual closing argument which was quite lengthy, but then he did -- he was able to say something in his own defense. what's always interesting about this case is that the legal judgment on liability, because of course this is a civil case, has already been made by the judge. this is all about the penalties, and a lot of the arguments that the former president's lawyer
fraud. the attorney general's lawyers saying you can't stick your head in the sand as a defense. >> kara, thanks for that report. i want to bring in our legal and pliical experts for analysis. >> i don't think he helped himself in front of a judge. perhaps that would have appealed to a jury and regular citizens, but i don't think that would impact the judge in any positive way if anything because the judge then had to turn to his lawyers and say calm down your client, i think that probably -- he did himself more harm. but i don't think that was even his point. right, his point was to be able to make a statement and use it for political purposes down the road. >> and that's clearly what he did. norm eisen, let me get your sense what's the risk right now for the trump organization? >> well, it's substantial, wolf, including that when all of these trial and appellate proceedings are concluded, it may no longer be called the trump

before it is even tried. which is unusual in a criminal case. because under his understanding of presidential immunity, he has the right to not even be tried. in most criminal appeals, you have to wait until you are convicted. but in a very narrow set of circumstances, you can argue that you don't even have to go to trial. that is what he is arguing. it is a tough case for him i think. >> coates: it's a really uphill battle for a lot of reasons. i remember the argument if i could shoot someone on fifth avenue, i could shoot someone and knowing. kara because i live in pennsylvania avenue, and that's all i need. of course the court will look through the lens of the, wild wild west argument. many people, jeffrey wrote a book on the supreme court, they all have this assumption it will all be decided according to who appointed these judges. that is not the case? >> it's not always the case,
