friends, and my community, than i am disappointed by the outcome. special counsel, david weiss made a rare statement defending the case ultimately, this case was not just about addiction, a disease that haunts families across the united states, including hunter biden s this case was about the illegal choices defendant made while in the throes of addiction this conviction comes to the possibility of a decades in prison, hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. but that is the upper range of sentencing possibilities. it s widely expected here that hunter biden would face something far less. say that president biden is handling this emotionally and with his family i m late in-person, although the biden family has in the past sought privacy during events related to hunter s legal battles. but today, choosing a very republic show of support at the delaware air national guard, where you saw president biden hugging hunter, hugging his wife, melissa biden, and giving a kiss on the head to no here s how that response came in will you accept the jury s outcome, their verdict no matter what it is? yes. and have you ruled pulled out a pardon for your son? yes. you have he was not asked about a potential commutation of a potential sentence, but the sentencing is currently expected to take place in the weeks before the election. wealth. kayla tausche at the white house for us, kayla, thank you. i want to dig deeper right now with our legal and political experts of course, khardori or former federal prosecutor, i ll start with you. what do you make of this fascinate the fascinating information we ve learned at least so far from jurors about how they reached this guilty verdict. well, it may think it s a testament to their honesty that the president s status as our commander-in-chief apparently did not weigh into there deliberations in any serious way. i do share the view of one of the jurors who described this as a potential waste of taxpayer money but nevertheless, that juror voted to convict hunter biden, understanding evidently that it s not that person s decision to decide whether or not the case should have been brought, but it was brought the judge the evidence and reach the conclusion that i think was largely unavoidable. jamal, let me get your thoughts and your mouth. simmons is with us. hunter biden, of course, is not a candidate. he s just the president s son. so what do you think the actual political impact of this conviction could be? i don t think there s going to be that great, but political impact, most people are not going to be swayed by this because most people have had some experience with their lives as the tragedy of addiction and gone down the road of what happens if people in their families who are addicted. so on one hand, you ve got the president signs and who is an addict? two substances on the other hand, you ve got a former president who has been convicted of 34 counts of hiding hush money payments to as pornstar mistress to keep her from going public during the midst of a presidential campaign. they re not the same thing. i think most voters know that alyssa farah griffin is also with us. alyssa, i want you in our viewers to listen to the house speaker mike johnson s reaction earlier today to this verdict. listen to this mr. speaker, you ve been saying two-tiered system of justice for some time. here s the president sayyed being convicted on three counts as that undercut your client it doesn t every case is different and clearly the evidence is overwhelming here. i don t think that s the case and the trump trials and all the charges that have and brought against couldn t have been obviously brought for political purposes. a hunter biden is a separate instance does this verdict elicit take the steam out of the republicans baseless claims about the weaponization of the us justice department of course, while it absolutely undercut said just taking a step back, we re in uncharted territory here were the same department of justice that indicted donald trump in the mar-a-lago documents case. and in the january 6 case, also just convicted the sitting president, son of a crime through a jury this is anything underscores that our justice system works without fear or favor despite the imperfections of it, it is something that works to be objective and i think it dramatically undermines this claim that it s a weaponized system. if you re an undecided voter, who d wasn t really sure what to make of the trump conviction. you her on the one side, on the right, that this was a weapon and on the left that no. a jury of his peers found him guilty. you re seeing this and i think you re saying, oh, wait, the system does seem to work regardless of who s who the name of the person that is on trial on kirsha, you were in the courtroom. my for much of this trial, hunters, sentencing, as we know, will likely take place in the fall before the election how much time, if any, is he realistically, realistically looking at? and does he have a chance on appeal? look, i would think he would be looking realistically at potentially months in prison if the prosecutors decide to seek a prison term and the judge is seriously considering it that would be consistent with sort of a first-time offender in this space. i m sure he will be arguing for a probation and he would have a good claim to probation given his history in and the uniqueness of this prosecution. but i think at the sort of the extreme he would looking at months, not not multiple years in terms of its appeal prospects. look, i do think he has a colorable appeal here based on his argument that the second amendment basically renders this prosecution unconstitutional and a prohibition it s not generally speaking, then as applied to him, unconstitutional. i have no idea how that issue will be resolved, but the supreme court has issued some very pro-gun rulings in this area. and if you were to follow the logic of the bruin decision to a t, there is a pretty good argument here that the laws under which biden was convicted are also unconstitutional as applied to him under the second amendment two, very interesting jamal or the timing of the verdict and eight, created a rather bizarre optics situation with the president biden delivering a previously scheduled speech, speech about gun safety. what just hours after his son was convicted on felony gun charges? the white house also later canceled the daily press briefing. is this a bad look for the administration? what do you think it s a bad day for the administration, but more importantly, it s a bad day for the president and for his son, but it s a bad day in a personal way, not really one about the administration and its policies. the president s policies aren t guns had been clear for a long time. he passed the assault weapons ban. but i just wanna go back to something we were at a minute ago with alyssa can you imagine a world where obama prosecutor, when after don junior, ivanka trump, while barak, while while donald trump was president he allowed that prosecutor to go after them, indict them, see them commit, can see them convicted, and then said he would not he would not pardon them. i can t imagine that world we all know. that s probably not the case. donald trump would i think we just lost, we just lost. that has a commitment to the rule of law that we just have never seen before. guard jamal standby, alyssa, the trump campaign statement reads in part, and i m quoting now, we read it this trial has been nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the biden crime family. is this verdict something the trump campaign can seize on politically? what do you think? so i actually see this totally different than jamal does. i actually think this could be a boon for biden. it s certainly doesn t help trump. and i think this sort of this statement afterwards spoke to the fact that if anything, it proves this point that the system is not weaponized, that donald trump s own conviction was legitimate 52% of americans approve of the conviction as many is 16% approve of the trump conviction so when you start dealing in those realities, electorally, knowing donald trump s name is on the ballot, not hunter biden s. i think they re realizing that this might undercut his biggest vulnerability, which it just has to be somewhere where you have what they call constructive possession, where you have access to it, whether it s locked away or not. but that would be a serious violation of not just a us federal law but also florida state law for a convicted felon now, let s set that aside for a minute authority say this is a complicated defendant he lives a complicated existence. he doesn t carry weapons, he s guarded by secret service but this is a detail that they want to resolve and make sure that that gun is accounted for all right. good reporting. thanks very much, john, for that report. let s discuss this and get some analysis from former federal prosecutor, at least adamson and cnn senior law enforcement analyst, charles ramsey alise, could trump s admission that he still holding onto this gun impact potentially his sentencing. it s coming up. what july 11, how soon does he have to turn this gun? well, that s a good question. well, if i think technically he should have already turned this gun in as was just reported donald trump was convicted of a felony. and so at this time, he would be considered a felon in possession of the firearm. now, new york has a very clear road map to how defendant needs to surrender their firearms post-conviction, it s a little bit different when we re talking about federally or other jurisdictions, when the conviction happened elsewhere however the by the letter of the law, once he is convicted, he can no longer be in possession. so it is odd to me at todd blanche would have sat there as he made this admission and not thought of this before the interview, we need more information when he says it s in florida, is it it is house. did he surrender it? where is it but assuming argue window, it s in mar-a-lago. that s a potential problem now, directly to your question as to whether or not it will impact sentencing. again, it s the facts and circumstances is the former president holding onto the firearm and just refusing to relinquish it. i think that would be a data point. the judge were merchan will take into consideration. but is this really just a case of figuring out how to surrender it or is he in the process of transferring ownership? all of those details will matter. come sentencing de chief ramsey, as you know, in new york officials said this information will be passed along to florida police to quote, and i m quoting now, take whatever steps are necessary if trump doesn t voluntarily return his gun what authorities do you believe have to step in well, you know, i think not at this has come to light that they ll work toward getting that gun. he s not supposed to be in possession of the gun. he is a convicted felon. but this is a situation where, you know, he s really living in two different places. i mean, he spends a lot of time in new york also in florida. the one gun is in florida now he had two others that he surrendered last year shortly after he was indicted so he s already given up two of the guns. this is the one that s outstanding i really find it hard to believe that they would not make every effort to try to turn that in as soon as possible, or leases trump potentially at risk of being criminally charged for illegally possessing a firearm yeah. so i don t think he is now, again technically, could they charged him perhaps if the circumstances are correct, if it is in mar-a-lago, if it is within his constructive possession, then yes. it s a very serious charge. they could charge him federally i just looked into it prior prior to speaking with you, it carries a term of a potential ten years in prison of slightly old statistic, but from 2021, the united states sentencing commission said 96.9% of defendants charged with that crime. were, were sentenced to prison. so very, very serious, risky, which is why i don t know why todd blanche would have not made sure that the gun was surrendered to authorities prior to the psi, but very unlikely because he s still in between the conviction and sentencing. and there isn t a clear legal requirement of when and how he surrenders the gun in florida. chief ramsey, your the former police chief here in washington, dc. former police commissioner in philadelphia, is trump getting more leeway, right now or is it standard for convicted felons to take time? to return their guns well, is that standard for convicted felons to take time to turn in a gun i m not aware of that occurring with any degree of frequency, but i do think that they will make some allowances to give him an opportunity to turn to gun in i d be surprised if that doesn t happen now, he is guarded as john miller said, by secret service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, he has a nice guy. he s got, but earth of his life, he ll have that kind of protection. and so there s a lot going on. this is unprecedented. we ve never had a homer president convicted of anything and so now this is just one of those things. it s very serious. i m not trying to make light of it, but i would doubt very seriously if this is going to be something that s going to go beyond a day or two before that gun is located, turned in chief ramsey. thanks very m going to send them a message every day, maybe every week. i ll be changing the flags. windsor also secretly recorded chief justice john roberts, who rebuffed her when she made a case for a more christian society we live in a christian nation and they are supreme court. so be guided know that we live in a christian nation. i know a lot of jewish and muslim hello, friends who would say maybe not. and it s not our job to do that job, the decide cases, especially and so far no comment on these secret recordings from the supreme court or from the job justices are from justice alito s wife. now the supreme court historical society, they hosted this dinner where the recordings were made. this is a yearly event and it s held inside in the court building. were members of the society are allowed to buy tickets for themselves. and one guest. and then of course, the gathering provides members this rare access to the justices as we saw in these secret recordings, wolf, it ll be interesting to see if any of their rules change after this secret recording. yes, it will. let s see if that happens. jessica schneider. thank you very much. i want to discuss this with our cnn legal analyst, steve vladeck. he s a professor at the university texas school of law. steve, do you see these comments from justice alito specifically as inappropriate? and is it reasonable to question his impartiality wolfe, i think what i m struck by in those recordings is the contrast between justice alito who, you know, for better, for worse, took the bait and who had no problem expressing views on subjects that you probably shouldn t have versus what we heard from chief justice roberts, which is basically what they teach in judge school, ought to be the answer when judges are asked to weigh in on contemporary political debates so i think justice alito is remarks are probably right up, if not over the line, wolf, the problem is putting them in context where this is not a one-off, where we re seeing so many examples of justice alito saying things like this in public suggested that he has very strong political views now he s having a hard time checking those at the door. well, if i think it s the aggregation of all of these public statements by justice alito. that s really the source of the cause for concern. because you know steve, this is the second controversy involving a martha-ann alito ginni thomas, also has faced questions about her political activities. so how does that impact perceptions of the us supreme court? yeah. i mean, i think there s no question that it has some bearing on public perception of the court. i mean, we really ought not to be judged by the actions of our spouses that certainly my wife s position about me but i do think it s worth stressing that the real question here is not can justice x participate in case why? the real question is, are the justices behaving in a way that is enhanced in public faith in the integrity of the court as an institution or not. and so for as much as justice alito has tried to suggest that the entire flag controversy are basically his wife s fault. i think his responses have not suggested that he is especially concerned about the message that the flag sent. his responses at the supreme court historical society suggest that he s not particularly concerned about being publicly associated with deeply, intensely divisive political comments and so wolfe, i think again, the question is whether if you look at this as a whole, there s reason to worry, not about individual justices in individual cases, but about whether there are justices on the supreme court who really do cede part of their job as picking a side and who are caring about when winning versus what we heard from chief justice this is robert, which is their job is to basically toe the line politically and decide the cases before them. we don t expect the justices to be saints, but we do expect them to at least appear publicly as if they are completely uninvestigated. and i think that s the concern that all of this behavior by justice alito by justice thomas, by their spouses is really brings us back to steve trip over the last several days. what s interesting of course, as we all know that elections are typically decided by the economy. but this is an election, of course, it has two wars that are raging overseas. there are the biden has been making the case about democracy that says major selling point. this is how voters view how the issues that are important to them, economy number 130, 1% immigration number two, we ll talk about that in a second. presumably think democracy is 16%, but still the issues about ukraine and the israel-hamas war ranking lower down sudden when you cover the white house for the associated press, how does the biden campaign believed that these issues, foreign policy issues, may have an impact or do they not think you ll have much of an impact come november well, there s a lot contained within that foreign policy category. obviously, we know that one of their biggest weaknesses is the biden administration s handling of the war in gaza, which has really dissolute progressive disillusioned progressives and young voters when the, on the issue of democracy, which you can also put into this foreign policy category, as we have seen over the last several days with president biden and france, they believe that is a really fundamental issue that unites not only their coalition, but kit gets those independent voters, those so-called nikki haley voters that we have seen persistently turnout in these primaries. they believe that that is something that could attract them to their sayyed. and that s why you saw that s one of the reasons why you saw biden speaks so forcefully in these issues over the last several days, he never really said the words donald trump, but you see the political subtexts. you can t help but see that contrast that president biden and his aides are trying to implicitly make against you know, someone like donald trump who disparages the nato alliance, who has said, who has given the green light to putin to do whatever he wants and biden says that is not the way and you really invokes the memory of d-day invokes the the honor of these army rangers to say what would they ask us? to do? we they would ask us to. one quote was vanquish hateful ideologies and you can t help but think that president biden was thinking about donald trump at that moment and look, but you talked about trump versus biden on some of these issues, isn t voters view them according to recent quinnipiac paul preserving democracy as joe biden i ll play a lot seven points, but he is losing. he s underwater. and what the israel-hamas more in russia ukraine, war, morrow i mean, what do you explain that? because trump is barely talked about what is policy is on the israel-hamas war or on ukraine for oh, he s been pretty clear on ukraine. he was impeached the first time because he held up military aid to ukraine. but about how to end this war. yeah, you know, except for that he d ended on day one. what this one was the president. but what s interesting about that, the bad numbers on gaza are about internal democratic divisions that young people and progressives are angry with biden about that. i think that as if biden can succeed in conflating foreign policy in the threat-to-democracy, which is pretty high up on those list of concerns foreign policies way down. but democracy is way up. if you can conflate them, i think that can help them. and what really struck me about the president and europe the things he said could have been said by any president. in other words, of course, we re going to defend democracy and our allies. but because he s running again, someone on a pretty openly authoritarian platform who said nice things about putin disparaged nato allies said, we don t really deserve belong in ukraine. it s not our fight. that s what made this contrast. so explicit want to turn to what you have is what you, some breaking news here about a major issue that president is going to confront and dealing with immigration. right now, if you look at this is isaac story from this morning, biden nears huge next move on. immigrations. you tries to win over latinos in key states this past week, he moved forward in an executive action that angered a lot of folks on the left to try to clamp down on migrant crossings at the southern border. this time a shift. what is it? what are reporting is that the president is very close to moving forward on what would be the next round of executive actions. it would be to make work possible legally for long term undocumented immigrants who are married to americans it sounds like a small group. it s actually about 800,000 people, predominantly latino, when you think about the effect that this haves, it s not just on those people themselves, it s of course, on their spouses under kidd on their whole networks around them, that really makes a reverberating effect through millions of people. by the way, many of those people concentrated in arizona, nevada, georgia, places of the president has been behind a specialty with latinos. there s a political benefit here, but to folks who are been involved with this, this looks a lot to them like daqqa to 0.0 this time, 2012, it was june 15, 2012, barak obama created the daca program for people who had been brought here as children, unknowingly to, so that they could be legal status that to a lot of people was one of the turning point moments for obama s reelection campaign. there is a deep desire to replicate that both in terms of the policy effect here and in terms of the political effect. yeah the political factors. one thing we ll look at it right now. obviously, both polls showed that biden is struggling with on the issue of immigration is what it is major vulnerabilities, but had a biden s bars versus trump s supporters look at the idea of undocumented immigrants and whether they should be able to stay in the us legally if certain requirements are met, the recent pupils that 85% of biden supporters would are supportive of that. but just 32% of trump s supporters such a divide here, but it s clearly he s moving. you could say, to the left to try to placate those concerns is hearing one, how he s been heroin and certainly i think it reflects the kind of cross pressures he s feeling. when the number of issues not only immigration before in policy, this is a president who s tried to be everything to everyone in a lot of points. and with on both the border. and i think in foreign policy you ve seen the difference the gold teeth on that. i think that biden. okay. man, obviously with this is a strip that has flipped to a political liability and i think it s because democrats have not had an affirmative position on a lot of these issues. they have been able to criticize donald trump and republican actions, but there has not been a unified view from both top of the party to the base. well, what to do about immigration? and once you do a look abroad, but i think it s important that we don t see these issues as completely separate. when people talk about the economy too often bring up the fact that we re, that we re giving a lot of money into ukraine in israel when people talk about foreign policy, they ll bring up preserving democracy. these things are working together and also biden s perception, even things like age, the perception of him is not in the driver s seat of kind of events, but reacting to advance, it s something that happens on the foreign policy states that is contributing to his perception of unpopularity domestically. so these things are all kind of all working together to create a really difficult picture for this president. but i think what we re seeing now is the is the white house trying to take a more active role in shaping ahead of this debate so that by the time donald trump makes these arguments, he can point to very specific things that he has done recently specifically on the issue he has someone isaac mentioned about the impact that leads me like dog got the biden team looks kinda views this as darker. 22 of you covered this very closely at that time biden has struggled since then, with hispanic voters. this is having any impact. do you think with that key demographic or is this something similar in any way to what obama did more than a decade ago? well, i was i was talking with some some people who work in this space and there s so much anger after the border executive action that the president role that this week, that there s some thought that they might not even want to praise whatever affirmative action that the administration roles that that would help these undocumented immigrants. but i think another thing to remember too, is that president obama in 2014 rolled out something similar on executive action that was actually blocked by the supreme court. and it was never implemented. and now i m sure biden s team i m sure biden s lawyers are trying to make sure to craft this proposal in a way that they feel could withstand scrutiny. but first of all, the supreme court is a lot more conservative now than it was in 24 14. and he s already going to he could do these things either on the border or on that. it could get blocked by the courts. and then what does that do? then what does that do? those people who he s trying to thwart such a good point, but i m talking to democrats about the premise of biden s campaign part of it was a belief that the legal problems will make donald trump inherently uncollectible. we have not seen that come to fruition and so what the harris is doing, i think it s to try to make that true in a way that democrats have not been able to kind of make that reality such so far, but their belief that they would inevitably have a risk? certainly we haven t seen that in the polls so far, but this is a race that s going to be won or lost on the market a tiny little shift of voters could make a big difference in battleground states speaking up, falling in line yes, i spoke to i spoke to a number of the sum of those vulnerable republicans in the house. so people will represent districts that joe biden won some districts even by double-digits. and i asked them, you have a convicted felon at the top of the ticket. are you still going to support now that trump has been convicted, are you planning on supporting him in november versus joe biden yes. yeah i already he voted for him in the primary november the way this is about the american people. i have no issues in supporting donald trump for president the united states. he s the republican nominee on the republican yeah. a lot of my constituents are i think even more than supportive now because democrats went way too far. having a convicted felon and a the other ones indicated they did look at another political universe you have a candidate who has some baggage. you re vulnerable member, you run away from, you don t want anything to do with them. hollywood tape in 2016 when we did see some on endorsements, but most of the party rally behind him because they know they re the republican lawmakers you talked to. they ve either accepted or maybe are residing to the fact that president trump is their party s nominee. and they know they cannot lose their base of supporters if they want to win they do need to attract the independent voters, which is why they say things like, well, we re supportive of trump, that we don t like the verdict and all that, but let s talk about the economy let s talk about immigration. that s how they tried to broaden their own coalition of voters. and i was just blast for the past manu, but remember when joe heck in 2016 shamelessly on endorse trump on live tv after access hollywood, i remember strategists at the time saying that s kind of where his campaign started going downhill because you really need to cole are really bring together, consolidate your own based first. yeah, good, good reference and then 2012, there s also but it was also the dynamic here is that there are republicans in the swing districts who are fine with endorsing trump than the love vulnerable democrats, vulnerable senate whether it s having any impact at all on voters while new polling shows there are some small size of shifts. broadly speaking, it has not made much of a dent in trump s standing, at least not yet. new poll from fox news shows the former president still ahead several key states, except notably in virginia, where the poll shows the race is tied. and of course, president biden won virginia in 2020 by about ten points or panel is back just a little bit deeper than that fox news poll about how independence, what they view, this has an impact in these swing-state, the hush money verdict the guilty verdict their 29% of voters in virginia say it matters up to 44% in florida, then you have the doesn t matter, 68% in virginia, all the way down to 52%, say it doesn t matter now we don t know that that means whether they re going to actually vote or they will vote but it doesn t seem to be. again, not a game changer. look, we always said this was the weakest of all the cases against him. it turns out it s the only one that s probably going to happen before election day and most people say it s not going to change their votes. npr, pbs, marist had a poll, 60 something percent said it won t change their votes, but 17% said they would, and that matters in a battleground state. so it might happen around the edges, but the biden campaign has to figure out how to make it matter. i don t think they re very clear yet on the best way to do that instead, you had actually been speaking to some of these voters throughout the course of these legal cases in your podcasts, you talked to a voter about whether they would switch to biden. this was someone who had said they were going to vote for trump and now will they switch vote for biden now that he s a guilty guilty in this case? so i was thinking along the lines of the january 6. now i m comprising yup. if you went after my mat and you re able to get them on something like that. that might make me change my mind, but this being a big item on i m sorry. it just doesn t sway me. i think it was a crime i am that in another world, if he was another person and nobody would have touched it, would you? this? is an arizona republican voter. cells as mine hasn t changed. yeah, this is part of two groups we spoke to. the first, which includes cart, was people who had set in the october york times paul, that if trump was convicted of from by, away from trump toward biden. and so that can to the point about margins make a small difference. but i would caution against saying this doesn t matter at all. donald trump s donald trump s legal problems have been ingested by most people well, and it s part of the reason democrats have done better and things like the midterms as far the reason joe biden has a narrative to tell swing voters in independence, because oftentimes it has come back to hurt donald trump. donald trump is a weak general election candidate, partially because of these things, all of the polling would tell us that republicans will be better served if someone else was at the top of the ticket, how ever because he s going up against another week candidate and joe biden relative to each other. he s still retaining that level of support. so that s what really came through in this poli. and it s not the people did not care about donald trump s baggage, is that it wasn t enough to overcome some of the unpopularity of joe biden. that s what we re seeing. that s a little more deeper rooted. i think some democrats expect, of course, the fact that a lot of these other cases almost certainly will not get reach a verdict november then it shows you that voter may not be swayed. we ll see, but i do want to turn to the other big criminal case. so hunter biden case, the president s son, there could be verdict this week. in fact, the instill question about whether hunter biden will testify. it seems unlikely he will in his own defense in this criminal case what s been we ll see what the fallout is depending on what the verdict ultimately is, what s been notable is there s been a shift a bit in trump s own messaging about this from 2022. now hunter, you got thrown out of the military. he was thrown out dishonorably discharged. that s not true. was it two years. and he didn t have a job until you became vice president. i feel very badly for them in terms of the addiction part of what they have, right now, because i understand the addiction world and i ve also not only a brother, i ve lost a lot of friends to addiction so suddenly he s changed his tune and hunter biden well, like many people saw that moment when the debate that followed that in 2020, when joe biden spoke very personally in viscerally about his son facing addiction and families of the face as one of joe biden s best moments in the campaign. donald trump seems to be responding to that. i think the other thing here is that this case is it s really complicated what happened with hunter biden here. it s not about drug use, it s about the gun charges related to drug use and trump s supporters are trump aides have said that they feel like this is not the kind of thing that they would like to be prosecuting the case on hunter on it doesn t get to the business dealings, it doesn t get to joe biden enriching himself. look, if you re going to get into complicated family dynamics with a lot of children the trump family has some you don t but speaking obviously says personal issue and the president, but politically zero concern in the biden camp about what a guilty verdict may mean for the president november they think that people will view these things separately. well, i think they re trying to make sure that these legal his legal hunters legal cases don t get conflated with what the present for the former president has been convicted of. and they are so different, obviously not only different facts, but hunter s a private citizen donald trump is the republican nominee. what what he does has a direct bearing on the american people, whereas janiot, you can i really argue that. but i think the democrats are really trying to make sure that in the eyes of the public that those two those two issues are kept separate. i think the concern among democrats is just the impact on president biden himself and he is a father. i this is his son going through very difficult moment and a moment of for soon and then the ceremony will begin at the octave try-on. then there will be a parade, precession to the lose, a palace where biden, french president emmanuel macron will attend a working lunch and both leaders are expected to give statements to the press before macron welcomes the president. and the first lady to the famous musee d orsay for a statement dinner. the close ties between the u.s. and france will be on full display today as biden continues to push his message of saving democracy and freedom following his d-day anniversary speech friday cnn senior white house correspondent kayla tausche is live and paris this morning. hello, kayla. we are expecting to see the president at the moment for this welcome ceremony. a walk us through what we will see today well, hello, or should we say bones zhou are from paris, amara today after a point in few days in normandy, the red carpet is now being rolled out in paris where president biden and president macron will now engage in a series of events to deepen the collapse variation between the two countries on a number of fronts, you will see them momentarily arriving at the arctic triomphe with local school children western ideology. they have grown much closer, but certainly president macron is keen to hear about president biden s prospects for reelection and whether as president biden has said, america is still morning for being with us. so let s talk about that speech that we heard from biden up on that famed clifftop obviously, there was some echoes of reagan s address at that same location in 1984 we heard biden there make his case for america s leadership in the world, but he also had a political pitch for those of us here at home. what did you make of what he had to say though he did not mention trump specifically? yeah, he was never going to mention donald trump by name. that would be a big headline because that would be a qbi accused of politicizing this historic memorial to these fall heroes and the people who actually were successful in storming the beaches. and so he has to walk a fine line between reminding americans and the world of democracies challenges today it s one of the top issues on the ballot in terms of what people of both sides think without making it too political and he can t make his entire election pitch all about democracy, given that a lot of americans face more common concerns about pain for bills paying for food and gas. and so they re not going about their lives thinking about democracy all day long. what do you think the white house is hoping will come up today s state visit with the french president well i think, the white house wants to send a message that the u.s. and france are aligned totally on ukraine. tried to see if they can move the ball forward in getting piece in gaza and israel. and i think they want also remind americans of the problem progress that they ve accomplished in terms of pushing back russia from ukraine. they ve had they have rare. this is one of their top foreign policy victories. but it s still uncertain and trump has said he is kind of less in zelensky s corner and people on the right are very skeptical of having a very drawn-out war and it s taken a long time to get weapons back to ukraine. and so they ve had to they ve had some tough spots in terms of zelenskyy is aides were saying, hey, one speech in normandy is not going to to help us out too much. we need weapons, we need training for pilots. if you look, just over the past several months, of course, macron and biden have been aligned when it comes to foreign policy, when it comes to the big picture with ukraine and obviously trying to prevent putin from expanding his empire. and of course the war in israel. but macron has taken a different approach and the way he thinks the western world should defend ukraine and also the way that he has condemned israel more publicly. what will you be looking for when it comes to their joint statement? well, they usually work these things out, weighing advance and there s not gonna be that much daylight between the two liters on major themes, the u.s. france or are huge allies. but i m going to what s interesting is that macron s team wanted a press conference joint press conference with biden. they turned that down. there is issues about an logistical issues they ve also had disagreements about china, france, macron has been more warm towards president xi and france has wants to maintain their commercial relationship with china more than the u.s. and i expect that to be talked about a little bit in their joint statement and in their private meeting what about their political calculations as both leaders meet today, i mean, they re both suffering low approval ratings, right? so if you could just give us context on both their perspectives as they have this meeting well, most people don t vote based on foreign policy or a meeting with a foreign leader, not as many french americans who are looking at this relationship, but i think that macron and many european leaders are afraid about biden s political standing they don t want to deal with donald trump one more this, is someone who has said to vladimir putin, you can do whatever the hell you want. if those, if countries are not paying their nato dues and so that is something that is macron can t endorse biden, but he s giving him a bear hug during an election year and this is biden s only state visit abroad during the seizure. and so of course it has good timing. but europe is afraid that it s going to get abandoned by trump, who is going to be more isolationist if he wins reelection, what is significant that you have president biden on this state visit during a very busy election year, daniel 8:00 p.m. local time, he will be holding a press conference and the expectation is that he will announce his withdrawal. now, he his party is not part of the the ruling coalition led by netanyahu. he joined the israeli war cabinet after 7 october, really, is part, a, part of a unity government. however, he has had differences his with prime minister netanyahu for many months. now he has been pressing for some sort of end to the war in gaza. but netanyahu doesn t seem to be in a great hurry to do that. now, we understand, however, that both of them basically agreed that they don t want the creation of a palestinian state something that president biden has pushed for eventually. and neither of them is in favor of the palestinian 40 running gaza after the war. nonetheless guns has had better relations with the biden administration. then the prime minister netanyahu gantz has actually gone to washington in defiance of the wishes of the prime minister but the fact that his party is not part of the ruling coalition means that his departure isn t necessarily going to result in the fall of the netanyahu government. it may however mean that the extremists in his cabinet will have even more influence on the prime minister timur emmer up, victor been wiedemann thank you so much. within our scene and military analysts, kernel cedric latent and cnn political and national security analyst david sanger is also a new york times white house national security correspondent and the author of a new cold war s, china s rise, russia s invasion and america struggled to defend the west, gentlemen, welcome, good to see you, colonel, let me start with you and kind of put together the news that we got from the top with ben wiedemann. and this expected departure of benny gantz does his departure dramatically change the execution of the war by the idf? said that there could be more extremist who have louder voices within this coalition of netanyahu s. what does the war cabinet without gantz look like on the ground? well, good morning, victor. i think it looks less moderate and if you can use the term moderate in quotation marks because the way the idf has conducted this effort, it, this war effort in gaza, it s really doesn t look like it s a an operation if they re handling with kid gloves, they re using brute force tactics in many instances and ben described at the top of his port there are still very major operations going on. so in the short term, the departure of the potential departure of defense minister against will not change those operations. and in fact, it could basically exacerbate debate the tensions that are already very high between the civilian population in gaza and the idf. so i think these are the kinds of things that we have to look for. i think that against this departure may result in even less moderate approach. when it comes to the conduct of the war david, betty guys gave netanyahu and ultimatum. he wanted to hear the plan to get the hostages back to israel. and what is the plan for a post-war gaza if he didn t get that, he was out on june 8th. he s not getting that and we ll get to that a little later. but what s the white? get house view of this likely departure well, on one hand, they are completely in gantz s camp. here it s the white house that has been pressing for a plan not only a short-term plan on the military sayyed, but an end game plan here for how gaza would be administered, for how long israeli troops would remain, four, how do you define the defeat of hamas? because as we learned after 911, you never completely defeat a terror group. obviously new members joined and so forth. but you want to get to a zero point, which president biden thinks he israelis arad right now, where the terror group cannot launch another major attack which of course is just what the president said the other day. so gantz s had much more of a direct channel back-and-forth with the pentagon, with secretary, lloyd austin, the defense secretary certainly with jake sullivan, and national security adviser and his departure is actually going to make it a little bit harder for the administration to talk to the war cabinet there are accustomed to ganz. he used to run the military. they consider him to be somebody who thinks and military terms and it s going to leave them more dependent on talking to netanyahu. kernel weight and cnn has learned that the cia is circulating a report that concludes a netanyahu is likely to defy the u.s. demand for the plan. the plan that benny gantz once as well about what happens after the war his belief is that he can avoid an exodus of military leaders, of members of the coalition if he speaks in vague terms here about what he wants to do next for in gaza how does that, if at all influence what the us does as it relates to military support, financial support for israel well, this is going to be very interesting question, victor, because it may not be the administration who wants to do this. the biden administration, but this could very well play into our hands of those elements in the us who do not want to support israel. there have been calls even from the nwa cp to stop arming israel, to stop weapons supply for israel. and if those kinds of efforts bear fruit, they could very well and create a big rift between israel and the united states. it was really be the first time in a long time that we ve actually seen a cutoff of arms from the us to israel. and i think it s a very distinct possibility, if netanyahu gets his way. and in essence kicks the can down the road forever and ever. and it does not come up with a plan and in essence says stalls everything so that he can not only maintain power, but keep the military operation alive for a very long time, a quickly david, how big of a threat politically is betty gods to netanyahu now outside of the war cabinet, if he does, it leaves a few months ago, we would ve said a significant one. israelis hold pretty highly for his opposition party but that has decreased some in the past couple of months. it ll be interesting to see if it comes back back now as he s operating from the outside, instead of the inside in some ways, he may be a bigger threat to netanyahu as an outsider. and thus more free to be a critic david sanger, kernel, cedric leighton. thank you thank start with you. there will be a lot of pretty pictures today some fantastic champagne tonight in the meantime, in-between time, what s the work that is to be done well, i m the pomp and ceremony parade in france. that he came back insistent that the united states too big military parades in washington and his military had to talk him down from this. so you ll see a lot of great scenery on the recently raising less suggestion that the west should be putting troops into ukraine, something the president opposes so you ll see a little bit of jiaqing on that. but i m sure they ll do their best to make her that doesn t come out. it s one reason there s no joint press conference and speaking of the pomp and circumstance, if you gentlemen will hold on for a bit as we take a listen to these buy on the issue of substance. and i want to get to you, colonel leighton let s talk about ukraine, because obviously ukraine is top of mind for both president s as zelenskyy was there for the d-day commemorations. we saw that he had the meeting with president biden on friday where he thanked him for america s reversal on policy allowing us weapons to be used inside russia for counter attacks but of course, biden also apologizing for the delay in funding colonel, how important is it for president biden and macron to be in lockstep in strategy when it comes to crime because we ve seen some differences, right? i mean, macron has been, i guess bolder in his approach to ukraine wanting more direct military involvement by nato allies. what are your thoughts on his approach versus the us one of the great things about this is that as we watched the two presidents lay the wreath to add the tomb of the unknown soldier s in france, in paris let s be honest the way in which they re doing this together is kind of the way the country s really want to act in terms of ukraine now, when it comes to the actual fact of the matter, there on slightly different timetables. so it s not anything that can t be bridged but one of the things that the french have announced is that they are going to provide training in mirage 2000 jet fighters for the ukrainian armed forces and that is going to make a really big difference. in the war effort in terms of beefing up ukraine s air force that will be in conjunction with the team training that is already happening. i not only in the united states, but in denmark and there s also supposed to be a trading center in romania that is being set up with french health so these are the kinds of things that will be a part of the effort. now, in terms of artillery and air defenses, the french have provided and in the process of providing even more weaponry in that, in that area to the ukrainians the united states, of course, as also do this in the preponderance of military aid is still coming from the united states, but basically france is leading the european collision to support the ukrainian war effort and i think president mecole seize this as being really a very important bulwark that he s setting up an essence of buffer zone with ukraine at the center of this buffer between an expansionist, russia desire by russia to move forward to consolidate its power and in essence to challenge nato, france recognizes that any challenges to nato are really challenges to its sovereignty and instability to note, maintain its independence as a european power. but it also means that the french are willing to to some extent to shoulder more of a burden, at least in the political sense. now in the 5-methyl, since that s a different, a different issue nic robertson to you now, both of these men are watching the calendar and they know that the us is about five months out from that s not funnel election and the former president donald trump could possibly be in the oval office again, how much does that calendar and the potential for a change in leadership here in the us influence what is happening today, what will be decided and emmanuel macron s position today is a concern and it s a concern because of the recognition that president putin in russia will just exploit any tiny difference that he spots in the nato alliance in terms of positions, whether it s macrons forward leaning desire to put military trainers on the ground inside ukraine, united states reticence to do that compared to an even more potentially isolationist situation in the united states under donald trump, if he becomes president and carries out some of the things is indicated that he would do yeah. as the clock counts down on that because they re putin would not be looking at exploiting small differences. there would be, in essence, if that was to happen a major rupture in the nato-like alliance and the belief in countries like france and germany and the baltic states and the new members like finland and sweden is that putin would massively try to exploit what he would perceive as a weakened nato because it wouldn t have the united states support that the money going into ukraine and the weapons going into ukraine could be faltering. so the clock ticks. there is nothing i drew. these leaders are perhaps less that president macron can do and maybe more that president biden can do in terms of finding ways to win the narrative and win the election in november. but the calendar is against both man and there are no assurances today that president biden can really give him emmanuel macron or any other european leader that are going to assuage their fears that an isolationist, the united states could be a reality they re dealing with by this time next year, of course, emmanuel macron tried to have a strong and positive i m robust relationship with then-president trump. but even that, despite his best efforts, faltered along the way. so there s a real realization macron has dealt with a president trump and knows the realities of the difficulty of how that relationship could be. so it s hard to it s hard to know what precisely the nature of the conversation, but undoubtedly it s going to be a topic and undoubtedly macron would look to biden any assurance and reaffirmation. biden s come confidence that he is going to win the election but at the same time, we ve also saved macron aggressively push for a self-reliance self-determined europe, and less dependence on washington. i want to thank all you, effort to tor battleground states and recruit black and latino voters for trump and the gop here s the catch though, in the announcement a source told cnn the republican national committee, and the trump campaign are quote aware of the initiative and they plan to be resources where needed. but this was not a directive from the trump campaign. so it seemed like they know he s doing this, but nobody asked him to do this. and those no urgency to help him help them center is god s plan is expected to focus on michigan north carolina, georgia arizona, nevada, and pennsylvania. so let s go to philadelphia this past weekend trump campaign, they actually hosted a black americans for trump up prevent. this one is cognac and cigars because you know how much we love hennessy the philadelphia inquirer points out that the first event was in northeast philadelphia. one of the widest and most conservative parts of philly congressman byron donalds was the main speaker. and for the rest of the week, he had to clean up or explain or defend comments he made that day about black families being together during jim crow let s talk about this muddled messaging with michael harriet. he is a columnist for the grill and author of the black aif history, the and whitewash story of america. michael good to have you. thanks for having me. so let s start here with why is tim scott doing this? and is he the best? i guess ambassador for the gop to get black and latino voters. he s, he s expecting to get them for trump and the gop when he couldn t get them for his own campaign. well, no part of the reason tim scott is doing this is not like you said, trump didn t ask him to do it is part of like he has some leftover campaign money. any wants to be vice friend? so why not use this to by the vice presidency, he s best positioned out of all the candidates, like to be the black vice president. so that s part of it. and the other reason is, i mean, let s be honest, i d like you know, here black people talk about like, let s go to the tim scott party yeah, you don t want to go right out to the tilt kind of it. but tim scott is partially dorna s to kind of make a men s to his own black constituents in his own blackstone, which is also a part what i don t understand because the way tim scott speaks about race in racism in the country now and he says there is no structural racism, there is no institutional racism is not the way he has always spoken about. if this is tim scott in 2016 talking about racism and the scales of justice, watch this so while i thank god, i have not endured bodily harm i have, however, felt the pressure applied by the scales of justice when they are slanted i have felt the anger the frustration, sadness and the humiliation that comes with feeling like you re being targeted for nothing more. then being just yourself that was 2016 and he one on the same ballot is donald trump won reelection in 2022. what happened? there? donald trump happen right so i ve talked to tim scott about this issue about justice in policing. remember, for years tim scott was trying to push through police reform or the water scott notification act four years, but all that would away with donald trump, right? because this current republican party is not really a conservative party, is the party of fealty to one guy. and what one guy dictates is what you have to do or be on the outs with the entire republican base. and so tim scott has set aside all nest of this. he has been fighting for for his own self-preservation. and that is to serve donald trump, the lord and savior. here s what byron donalds said this week about black families and jim crow so one of the things is actually happening in our culture would your now starting to see in our politics is the re, in the region invigoration of black families with younger black men and black women that is also hoping so breed the revised hi have a black middle class in america. you see during jim crow going to go back to orange and grow back family wants together during more black people were not just conservative, but you always have 50 serving of my are more black people holy conservative leak and then hew, lyndon johnson. and you go down that road. and now we are where we are now he could. have made that point without invoking jim crow. why the frame work of american apartheid around families and families staying together? well, first of all, yeah, like you said, like, i don t even know why he spent the rest of the week defending stuff that he brought up. but i think that he was dog listening to a particular part of his base, white, not the black men, but there is a segment of black men who wish that they could return to the days when women didn t have all the rights that s one of the parts of that that we don t talk about that he s kind of dog whistling to like after the civil rights act women also got rights and that is why marriage rates in every race decline because they could have bank accounts, they could get jobs. and that s one of the things that he was dog whistling too. but the other thing is that he was dog whistling two part of his constituency because at those events, mostly white and at those events like those constituents who are gathered their they also are what to return to that jim crow time. that s the place that they want a return. that s what they re talking about, what they say make america great again. and that was also or not those people michael harriet. thank you for having us understand this outreach to says that when they found out that only 2% of that financing with the companies founded by women. and less than 1% went to company started by women of color. it became their mission to close that gap with a grant program for black women entrepreneurs but their work is now on hold after a new federal well appeals court ruling fearless fund was soon on behalf of a group called the american alliance for equal rights. and they argue the program violates the law. and they say programs that excludes certain individuals because of their race, such as the ones that feel this fund has designed and implemented are unjust and polarizing. now, the aer is led by edward blum. now he s not a household name, but i m sure, you know, the fruits of his work recently he s the legal strategist who supreme court case dismantled affirmative action in college admissions. a blom is not trying to hide his continuing crew say this headline conservative activist who took down affirmative action is now going after law firms, diversity programs is featured on his groups website. his group is also going after a southwest airlines travel award program for hispanic students. the smithsonian institute, a national museum of american latino, in march blum touted as settlement that promised the museum s internship will now be open to all ethnicities but not just blum. it s taken up this cost since the affirmative action ruling conservative groups like here s have targeted a range of programs from those studying reparations to a program meant to help pregnant women of color now with that context, let s bring it now. ariane simone, she s the ceo and founding partner of fearless fund. thank you for being with me this morning. let me start here with i think is probably a pedestrian question, but i want to let you run a little bit with it. why socially, why culturally are these efforts successful, and why the fearless fund? i can t exactly tell you why the fearless fund, but what i can share is the impact that we have had prior to the fearless fund being in existence. black women had an average fund raise of $30,000 when the fearless fund was bounded, it came on the scene. we were cutting seven figure checks to black and brown women. our thesis is that a woman of color co-founder must be on the founding team and that is the impact that we have had. we ve raised somewhere over 60 million. we ve deployed investments at our investment vehicle and at our foundation, we have deployed grants as well as health education programs. i can t exactly say why we were targeted, but we this is the impact that we have and maybe some view it as a threat so among your list of investors, bank of america, jpmorgan, chase, mastercard, ally paypal does this ruling jeopardize that support that you then pass on to the women you award these grants well, there s two things going on. there s our foundation that s where grant programs are held. and there is our fund which is our investment vehicle, since the lawsuit, i can say that we have not had a closing on the funds sayyed, where we raise capital in order to invest in women of color since the lawsuit, we have had some corporate partners step up on the foundation sayyed, can continue those programs, but on the front side, we have not had a closing since the litigation has taken place. so there was a study from goldman sachs in 2020 that black business owners say that they were denied bank funding at a rate three times that of what we heard from are they heard from white business owners? what does this ruling practically mean for black women invest entrepreneurs and maybe other organizations that like yours target investment in this community that is at the front of the line when it comes to starting new businesses in this country it is very concerning. we only exist due to the racial disparities that exist as you stated, just recently, that there have been many times where people of color and black women and black people have been denied funding and financing there is no reason why black women are the most founded entrepreneur demographic, while receiving the least of the funding that takes place. there s no reason for that at all. these programs are at stake and they re at stake because this is a precedent case. this being used as a benchmark way to establish case law for what is either violating the law or accepted by the law. so yes, this is definitely very concerning and i hope everybody is taking note on simone ceo and co-founder of the fearless fund. thank you so much for your time this morning. the pardon of a man who murdered a black lives matter protester, daniel perry, was released from prison last month after the pardon from governor greg abbott. now, a jury convicted it. did perry of murdering garrett foster at a black lives matter rally in 2020 foster was the fiance of whitney mitchell and whitney is a quadruple amputee and said, foster had been her sole caretaker for more than a decade she was at the press conference this week with garrett foster mother, sheila foster, where this challenge to the pardon was announced. now, here s how daniel perry s attorney is responding kalisa garcia is making a mockery of the laws of texas and the state constitution which give governor abbott this power well, travis county district attorney jose garza is with us now alongside sheila foster, garrett foster s mother thank you both for being with me. and let me start here with you, da garza, texas constitution, our region just a section of it. the governor shall have power on the written sine recommendation and advice of the board of pardons and paroles the majority thereof to grant reprise commutation of punishments and pardons. why is perry s attorney wrong? the governor s power to issue a pardon is not on limited and that s because the governor is not a king. he s not a monarch. keats still has to operate inside of our democracy and inside our democracy, there are rules that are laws that govern how pardons can be issued and what steps need to be taken before a pardon can be issued. in this instance. those laws were clearly violated. but texas also has defense council would read a little further in the constitution. he would also see that the texas this constitution has one of the strongest separation of powers clauses in the country. and as a result of that, it prohibits the governor from interfering in the role of the judiciary, which is exactly what he s done in this case. this pardon makes a mockery of our justice system. it has inserted politics above the law and above justice, and we intend to continue the fight. them to uphold this conviction or garrett and for his family ms foster, to you, you ve spoken about not just what this pardon means for you, your family, your son, but what this means potentially for other governors, for other offenders, the legal system it sets a precedent. it sends the wrong message it allows people to copycat what he did and how would everybody feel if that had been a trump rally? would he be pardoning this man if that had been a trump rally the garza, you say that this interferes with a judicial system if that is the threshold let me just give you some some room here to explain that. how does it interfere? i mean, the the guy oven or has the power after conviction on advice from the pardon and paroles board that happened here where did he interfere? let s let s talk about this from a couple of different perspectives. first of all this part is wholly unprecedented in many ways. the request for a pardon was issued less than 24 hours after the jury verdict the part in itself was granted after the appellate. i m sorry, before the appellate process even began it is the first time in the history of the state of texas that have governor has pardon someone before the appellate process has run its course. but the other piece of this is that the rules are clear. that in order for a pardon to be granted in the case defendant is asserting actual innocence. that the defendant has to either provide evidence from the district court or provide written letters from from two of the trial officials and in this case, none of that happened because all of this is political. let s remember that the governor old for this, pardon? i m after being bullied by tucker carlson and other right-wing voices on conservative media and so no one should be surprised that they circumvented all of the rules and all of the normal legal process to get to this political outcome. certainly the power of pardon is a strong one, but it is not an unlimited power. and it should be insulated from politics. that s not the case here sheila i having spoken with several parents in your position after losing a child, the conviction of the person who murdered that child is part of the healing not closure. i don t think there s ever closure, but healing how has this period since the pardon been for you i ve been sick ever since the governor announced his plans to pardon. i haven t been able to return to work because i am so sick because of the stress we waited nearly three years for a trial and when we finally got a guilty verdict, i was able to sleep fully for the whole night for the first time since my son s death. and then 18 hours after the jury verdict the governor announced his plans, departed it has wreaked havoc on my health and now that he s done it i don t i don t function normally anymore i m just honestly terrified how is weekend? i know saying yeah, i saw her last week and visited with her and she s she has struggling this is not right. there s nothing about this that is fair. there was nothing wrong done in that trial and they are just using this for political pandering. i should also say the documents show that perry texted in may of 2020 quote, i might go to dallas to shoot looters close. quote, and also shared racist messages, including white power memes, as well. now there are 14 attorney s general who are asking the department of justice to look into this see if there had been federal laws broken sheila foster, district attorney, jose garza. i of those heroes was corporal waverly woodson junior. he was an army medic, part of the 320th barrage balloon battalion that all-black unit landed on omaha beach june 6, 1944 and 80 years after spending hours treating wounded soldiers as he was injured himself. copa woodson was posthumously awarded the distinguished service cross that s the second highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the army. and on friday, the us army, the first army, honored woodson and his melody associated press took these photos of the ceremony and they described the metal being laid there on the sand and soldiers saluting it. the api described the metal being passed around among the soldiers delicately. and it was explained that we want to be able to say that this metal came from omaha beach and was at the site of woodson s actions corporate woodson son, steven is here also with this is shyam brown. she chronicled the stories of heroes like stevens dad in a new documentary a docuseries, in fact called erased world war 2s, heroes of color welcome to you both. and steven, let me start with you because i understand there was a reporter from the api who described to you over the phone what that ceremony was and what they did and as you heard it, what do you feel i was overwhelmed with emotion. victor, it was extremely well-done i actually did get to see portions of the video and on there s truly unbelievable and honored what does this mean for your family for your 90 mother? what does this honor, now, me it s a tremendous honor to our family. we ve been in pursuit for recognition for not only my dad, but just african american soldiers who participated in d-day invasion is 320th and by receiving this honor, it s just a little bit more of closure of recognition for all african american soldiers have participated in d-day. my dad s heroism was outstanding, but it s true honor, our family and shy. and do we know how many now black service members participated on that day in 1944? so with the free 20th, there were over 1,000 african american troops as a part of that barrage barrage balloon battalion and as well as the free 20th who were the only black combat unit to land on the beaches of d-day. there were also a lot of labor troops and so within our documentary series, we ve looked at combat unit combat units as well as people who would have been serviced troops at the time. so yeah, there s we re still discovering stories and it s just it s been an amazing journey to be a pole. according to the army, more than 1 million you in black people served during world war ii we know why they weren t recognized 80 years ago or even 50, 40 years ago. but why are they so under-recognized today, cheyenne oh, that s a tough question, but i think there s a way of rewriting history and what we mentioned in my film is that there are plenty or history books films, documentaries, which often leave out the black experience in world war two. but what we know is it was world war there were over 8 million people of color who served in world war two. and i think those stories need to be recognized and it s taken so long because i think it s hidden history and i think it s incredibly empowering and brave what these men and women do and had done there. so i think it s, i think it s who writes the history, what historians know, what archivists know. and another thing is a lot of the time to black troops what photograph, and they weren t recorded but in my film, you see black troops on in kettering in middle england. so we managed to discover that footage, but it was really, it s quite difficult to find a large array or photographs and footage steven, i understand that your family is now calling for your father to be honored with the medal of honor yes. matter of fact, we ve been in pursuit for this or with this for a number of years. my mom is really karatay, the torch or a majority of the time and with her being 95 now, she s doing great. but she has asked me to step up in and take her place in pursuit of my dad s recognition. so everything is going along fine senator chris van hollen from the state of maryland has copyright infringement the claim is that they are reggaeton songs derived from an instrumental by jamaican duo cleveland, cleaving brown. and white cliffs, steely johnson called fish market from 1989. allowing it now to move forward. wayne marshall is here. he s an ethnomusicologis t at berklee college of music and co editor of the book reggaeton weighing good to see you so this beat this dembo beat is everywhere. how foundational is it to the genre of reggaeton? oh, i mean that basic beat is absolutely foundational to reggaeton. a lot of people would say without that beat, that rhythm, it s not reggae tone. and you can find that beat propelling most reggae tone souls so this judge is now not determined whether the beat pattern is original work are warranted copyright protection you study this, does it first appear in fish market in 1989 or has it been around forever? well, yeah, it s a great question and perhaps a crucial question and one that will start to come out as the trial proceeds and it really depends on how you define it. obviously, steely and clearly or making the argument that they brought this rhythm into shape. and in an original and protectable way back back, then but it really is a question that basic beat that get to get, get to that we hear all the time and reggaeton. and that really define the sound of dancehall reggae in the late 80s and early 90s on the other hand, could be heard as a far, far older and more traditional rhythm these days we call it dembo pointing back to a dental rigueur record by sciubba ranks called dembo but 100 years ago, you would have heard somebody referring to that basic rhythm as the harb and anera because it was so closely linked to havana and in various other moments in time, it s been known as the tango. that s where tango gets its name. it s been known as bamboo law. according to robert farris thompson the great chronicler of afro diasporic culture in his work on tango he notes that back in congo, it was known as a mach-e new the call to dance. and so it s also not wrong for you to respond that way and apparently people have been responding that way to that rhythm for a very long time. one of the more than 100 artists who have been sued is, as i mentioned, bad bunny his album in 2023 was the most streamed album on spotify, 4.5 billion streams. what does this lawsuit mean in this moment of man? i save growth for reggaeton right? yeah, i mean, as you note reggaeton has been a massive growth sector in the music industry in general, bad bunny has been on top of the world more or less for several years. we had the story of days by sito back in 2017, making a record run up the anglo pop charts. so there s a lot of money, there s a lot of money, and reggaeton. and i think that s part of the backdrop here, is that jim making musical style has been a part of the global mainstream for quite awhile. and it has sort of defined the global mainstream through, through reggae tone for the last possibly 20 years, certainly the last decade or so. i think you ve got a lot of jamaican producers and artists looking around and seeing a lot of people who are not jamaican exploiting beats that they think really are from jamaica. and they re wondering what they ve been left out. yeah. and that is certainly the undertone of this now is reclaiming the origin of some of this music as so many around
