Skeptical Science New Research for Week #23 2023

Open access notables
Back in April of 2020 Chi Xu et al. captivated some public attention with their paper Future of the human climate niche,  which explained a reasonable case for its startling conclusion about routine habitability of large parts of our planet now supporting dense populations. Now come the same researchers along with added talent to refine and extend those results, and the news isn't getting better. Quantifying the human cost of global warming paints a grim picture. Here are our stakes in play, as reflected in the abstract:

FRIDAY’S FORECAST
Clearing skies for the evening will help us to once again drop below freezing overnight. The days with highs in the 30s are numbered though, with a nice warm up expected for next week.
Winds tonight will die down, but still add a chill to the air. Sunshine will follow us from today into the weekend and really begin to warm us up.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) - WAFF is keeping an eye on next week’s winter weather threat, which comes with a chance for power outages.
Ice, wind, fallen trees — all of these things could cause power outages.
Lauderdale County EMA Director, George Grabryan, said during these potential icy events you should be prepared to lose power.
“You need to start preparation before it even hits. You need to make sure where you live that you have sufficient groceries that you don’t have to cook and of course a manual can opener is always good. You need to have a plan if you were to lose power or lose heat,” said Grabryan.

KILLEN, Ala. (WAFF) - More than 4,400 Alabamians have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
That’s within two weeks of the state receiving shipments.
In just five days residents and staff at the Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home will have their turn to roll up the sleeves.
On Tuesday, a group from Walgreens will set up a COVID-19 vaccine clinic. The workers will give the shots to residents and staff and then report back to the health department.
