The SeAH Woon Hyung Lee Foundation will bring Mozart's comic opera "The Marriage of Figaro" to the stage without a live audience March 20 as part of its "Opera Bucket" series at the Seoul Arts Center. The concert will be aired online on Naver TV and YouTube starting from 7 p.m. on the day.
Opera Bucket concerts were first started in 2015 to inherit the will of Lee Woon-hyung, the late SeAH Group chairman and an avid opera fan. This year marks the sixth such concert to be held.

(LEAD) Cardinals’ Kim Kwang-hyun struggles in spring debut vs. Mets
March 5, 2021
St. Louis Cardinals’ South Korean starter Kim Kwang-hyun was shaky in his spring training debut against the New York Mets, unable to take advantage of an extra opportunity to right the ship.
Kim gave up four runs — one unearned — in 2/3 of an inning across two stints on the mound against the New York Mets at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter, Florida, on Wednesday (local time). The left-hander struck out two and walked two while allowing four hits.
Kim, a former MVP-winning starter in his native South Korea, is entering his second major league season. In a truncated, 60-game season in 2020, Kim was 3-0 with a 1.62 ERA in eight appearances, including seven starts.

5 Koreans Preparing to Make Mark in New MLB Season

March 03, 2021 11:02
Five Koreans will play in Major League Baseball in the upcoming season as infielder Kim Ha-seong and pitcher Yang Hyeon-jong have newly joined the San Diego Padres and the Texas Rangers.
The other three are Ryu Hyun-jin of the Toronto Blue Jays, Kim Kwang-hyun of the St. Louis Cardinals and Choi Ji-man of the Tampa Bay Rays. Choo Shin-soo, who played for the Rangers, left the club to play in Korea. They are now taking part in spring training, for which exhibition games started on Sunday.
Kim Ha-seong went 1-for-4 in his first two exhibition games for the Padres in Arizona but hit all four balls hard. In Monday's game against the Chicago Cubs, he lined a ball directly at the left fielder in his first appearance before hitting a hard single his second time up, while on Sunday he flied out to the outfield twice against the Seattle Mariners.

By leaving MLB for KBO, Choo Shin-soo becomes eligible for Tokyo Olympics
February 24, 2021
Perhaps lost amid the excitement and hoopla over Choo Shin-soo’s signing with a South Korean club after 16 years in the majors is this little nugget: Choo will also be able to play for his country at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.
On Tuesday, Choo signed a 2.7 billion-won (US$2.4 million) contract with the SK Wyverns of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), a club soon to be renamed following a takeover by Shinsegae Group’s discount store chain, E-Mart.

(Yonhap Interview) Durability, versatility give Yang Hyeon-jong advantage at Texas Rangers’ camp: coach
February 17, 2021
Having recently signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers, veteran South Korean pitcher Yang Hyeon-jong will try to win a major league job at spring training this month.
And given his proven track record of durability and ability to command multiple pitches, Yang will have every opportunity to make the major league club, said Rangers’ pitching coach Doug Mathis.
In a phone interview with Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday, Mathis spoke highly of Yang’s success in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with the Kia Tigers, and how he feels that history should help the Korean pitcher in the United States. Mathis even got a firsthand look at Yang, having pitched in the KBO for the Samsung Lions in 2011 during Yang’s fifth season. Mathis was 5-2 with a 2.52 ERA, and started Game 1 of the Korean Series as the Lions won their first of four consecutive titles.

This Year in Sports

Sports now and with it being the last Monday of 2020, it's time to take a look back at the year that was with our sports editor Paul Neat joining us in the studio.
Paul, it has been an eventful year but began with some success for the Korean national football team?
Yes, it did.
Way back in January, South Korea won the AFC U23 Championships in Thailand, beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the final. Giant defender Jeong Tae-wook grabbed the game’s only goal in extra time.
Starting as he meant to go on it seems, it turned out to be quite the year for Son Heung-min. In February he became the first Asian player to score 50 goals in the Premier League.
