going to come down. to kristen, thank you very much. with your reporting. and i want to go now straight to john king at the magic wall. so john, finally, tomorrow it begins. iowa. so what are you watching for? >> well, finally, erin, 24 hours from now, we'll be counting votes. we'll be watching the wall fill. in 9 nine counties in iowa, many of them rural. that's key to donald trump. let's go back to what you've been discussing with your panel, kristen there for a sext second and show the poll. excuse me for turning my back. i want to stretch this out. ted cruz came back, he was behind and he one against donald trump. rick santorum won in 2012, surpassing mitt romney. but the lead was nothing like that. donald trump at 48%, nikki haley at 20, santorum at 16. so this would be an earth-shattering what if someone beat donald trump in iowa. so largely, it seems to be a fight for second place. but can trump stay under there? so what do you look for? one of the key things, erin, we talked about this a little the other night. if you look at this, the deeper the shading, the more

and day, eight days. so you just have to put on that warm coat and get out there. i said it to one of our people and they said oh, that's good news. i said why is it good? because their people don't have the enthusiasm to vote and my people will walk on glass. they don't care, right? right? >> our kristen holmes is in des moines right now. kristen, what are you hearing from your sources inside the trump campaign? i should note to our viewers, it is negative 7 degrees where you are in des moines. i'll stop talking so you can get through this quicker. what can you tell us? >> yeah, it is very cold, jim. got a little gust of any in my face and it is not pleasant. we are waiting to hear from former president trump. he's doing a video rally from a hotel in iowa tonight. it is not open press. just something that is streamed. but what we are waiting to hear from his team is the de mdes
>> no question. but i think the point that david and kristen are raising is an extremely significant one, as we move into the general, he's going to be the nominee. how long can you really keep donald trump in this more reserved place? everything we know about him, everything we've seen, you know, he doesn't like to be scripted or when he feels he's under attack or pressure, you know, doesn't react in a really bombastic way. and so, you know, i think if they're banking on keeping a disciplined donald trump to win the general>> it does help when fox provide him these safe spaces to do town halls where he doesn't get significant pushback, as opposed to tough questions to haley and desantis. >> he can go to fox news and find a safe place or a home there, but he's still going to have to compete with joe biden. the thing joe biden and kamala harris are doing is they're actually campaigning now. kamala harris was in atlanta, georgia. she's been in south carolina
deportation. >> now, this all comes as the final des moines register poll shows nearly half of caucus goers in the hawk eye state support the former president. trump would win the highest share of iowa republicans for a non-incumbent in history. kristen holmes is with the trump campaign in iowa for us right now. a lot of the same kind of incendiary rhetoric coming from the former president, kristen. what can you tell us? what did he say? >> reporter: yeah, jim, i think he was making up for lost time after he cancelled three of the four events. he was here speaking for nearly two hours and touched on almost all of the same messaging that we have heard for the last several months, as you talked about. immigration, they believe that is key to his win. he also talked about his legal problems. at one point he talked about the fake elector slates, bringing up that all of this was unfair in relation to his indictments. take a listen.
and his team, that he's going to win by a large margin tomorrow. but the question is, just how big of a margin, and will it be enough to stop the momentum they see from nikki haley not only here in iowa but particularly in the new hampshire. we know his team has been very concerned by her rise in the polls there. they are spending $4.5 million combined just ahead of the primary, just attacking nikki haley. just for reference, his team is spending $0 attacking florida governor ron desantis. they're pouring all of their money into these attacks on nikki haley. and he spent a significant portion of his time today going over nikki haley's record, saying that she wasn't suitable to be president, that she was weak, a message we're likely to continue to hear the next couple of days, the next couple of hours, as we lead up to these caucuses. >> all right, kristen holmes with the trump campaign. did not think we would hear the former president invoking thomas jefferson today, but here we are. kristen, thank you very much.
