Hamilton was the joint winner of the World Sportsmen of the Year award last year along with Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi.
It was the second time he had gotten his hands on a prize after being named the Breakthrough of the Year back in 2008 when he won his first-ever World Championship.
After his 2020 victory, Hamilton said: “Thank you, Laureus Sport, for this incredible award of World Sportsman of the Year.
“To think my name is going to slot in alongside the legends who have won this award before me is really humbling.”

Skiing superstar Lindsey Vonn has backed the International Olympic Committee’s move to effectively outlaw podium protests at future Games but supported athletes wishing to highlight human rights issues in the build-up to Beijing 2022.
Vonn, who retired in 2019 as one of the most successful skiers in history with both world and Olympic golds, 16 overall World Cup season titles and a women’s record 82 individual World Cup race wins, insists that while the podium is a “sacred place”, officials must ensure other means for athletes’ voices to be heard.

NEW ORLEANS, April 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA, along with partners the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Brees Dream Foundation, and Nike, announced their continued commitment to improving the health and well-being of New Orleans youth, an investment that has already impacted the lives of over 1,500 young people. The partnership is part of a five-year commitment of $500,000 to support sports-based youth development (SBYD) programs serving New Orleans East, a geographic location that has the densest population of youth with very little resources. These funds will be especially critical now as organizations safely return to play and work to help kids heal and grow after one of the toughest years this neighborhood has faced.

Sir Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes in running for Laureus awards

Hamilton, Mercedes on Laureus awards short-list
Date published:
February 24 2021
Sir Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes team are both in the running to repeat their previous successes at the Laureus World Sports Awards in 2021.
Hamilton was the joint winner of the Sportsman’s award last year along with Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi and, unlike the Argentine, has made the six-man short-list again.
The 36-year-old Briton coasted to his seventh World Championship title in 2020, equalling the record held by Michael Schumacher and also surpassing the German to hold the highest number of F1 race wins, 95.
In doing so, Hamilton played a large role as Mercedes clinched their seventh consecutive constructors’ World Championship, winning 13 of the season’s 17 races.
