LONDON (AP) — Les McKeown, the former lead singer of the 1970s Scottish pop sensation Bay City Rollers, has died suddenly at the age of 65, his family said Thursday.
A statement from his family posted on social media said: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father Leslie Richard McKeown.” The Scottish singer died at home on Tuesday, it added.
Formed at the end of the 1960s, the Bay City Rollers enjoyed huge success in Britain and abroad with their tartan outfits and pop tunes like “Bye Bye Baby,” “Shang-a-Lang” and “Give a Little Love.”

Les McKeown, who has died aged 65, was the frontman in the Bay City Rollers, the Scottish boy band who took the 1970s music world by storm with “Rollermania”; his vocals were first heard in 1974 on Remember (Sha-La-La-La), which shot to No 6 in the UK charts, heralding the start of band’s most successful period.

The Bay City Rollers died Tuesday, April 20, according to a message posted by his family on his Twitter feed. He was 65.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father Leslie Richard McKeown,” the message reads. “Leslie died suddenly at home…We are currently making arrangements for a funeral and ask for privacy after the shock of our profound loss.”
In the ’70s, The Bay City Rollers were global teen idols, inciting “Rollermania” among their screaming fans, nicknamed “The Tartan Horde.” The band sold 120 million records, mostly in the U.K., the U.S., Australia and Japan.

Les McKeown, the former lead singer of the 1970s Scottish pop sensation Bay City Rollers, has died at his home in London, his family announced Thursday.
A statement from his family posted on social media said: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father Leslie Richard McKeown.” The Scottish singer died Tuesday at age 65, it added.
Formed at the end of the 1960s, the Bay City Rollers enjoyed huge success in Britain and abroad with their tartan outfits and pop tunes like “Bye Bye Baby,” “Shang-a-Lang” and “Give a Little Love.” They had a fanatical teen following and sold more than 100 million records. Some in the British media called them the “biggest group since the Beatles.”

Former Bay City Rollers frontman Les McKeown has been remembered following his passing, aged 65, after appearing on the Costa Blanca south in 2019.
“We say Bye Bye Baby one last time from the Villamartin Plaza to our dear friend Leslie Richard McKeown who left us Tuesday evening,” Casey Shaddock who booked McKeown’s Bay City Rollers to perform in Spain told The Leader.
“Our sincere thoughts and condolences go out to Peko, the family, and all of the band,” said Shaddock.
Shaddock, the President and spokesperson for Villamartin Plaza, said: “It was a pleasure Les, ‘Villamartini’ as you always called it, will always remember you.”
