A 'DJ Academy' gives Philly and Camden kids a chance to experience their musical heritage

A ‘DJ Academy’ gives Philly and Camden kids a chance to experience their musical heritage
Kevin Riordan, The Philadelphia Inquirer
The After-School All-Stars program has introduced thousands of Philadelphia and Camden middle school students to the possibilities of careers in robotics, fashion, engineering, mural arts, and even watershed management since 2014.
But the 2020 launch of a “DJ Academy” in the midst of the pandemic was a different sort of learning experience for students and teachers alike.
“The DJ Academy gave students a chance to dream,” said Christopher Pender, director of programs for the Philadelphia-Camden chapter of the national nonprofit After-School All-Stars program. “Cosmo and Carlo took the class to the next level.”

Husnaa Haajarah Hashim sees poetry as transformative
A former Philadelphia Youth Poet Laureate, Penn junior Hashim reflects on her writing and scholarship during this moment when Amanda Gorman, the youngest presidential inaugural poet, is bringing national attention to poetry.
Husnaa Haajarah Hashim, a Philadelphia Youth Poet Laureate, is a junior at Penn, an Africana studies major, and creative writing minor.
Watching Amanda Gorman, the first National Youth Poet Laureate, perform her poem at the presidential inauguration, Penn junior Husnaa Haajarah Hashim
thought of herself as a 10-year-old African American girl getting her poetry published for the first time.
Hashim is one of the celebrated young writers, like 22-year-old Gorman, in a new generation of poets.

Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium to help administer vaccines

The consortium will begin administering the vaccines when Philadelphia enters Phase 1B of its distribution plan, which includes critical essential workers and is expected to start sometime soon in early 2021. The organization’s vaccines will be available for city residents only.
The city’s Department of Public Health announced Tuesday who will be eligible for the vaccine during Phase 1B, including first responders, service providers working with high-risk populations, public transit workers, food handlers, child care and education providers, high-volume essential retail workers, and those who manufacture critical goods. However, signing up via the consortium’s form does not guarantee you will receive the vaccine during Phase 1B.

Staffing agency perseveres through challenging times

When the novel coronavirus pandemic hit in March and schools closed, Tara Aldrich wasn’t sure if her educational staffing agency would survive.
She leads Educators On Call, which specializes in providing substitute teachers and paraprofessionals to charter and private schools.
The pandemic has caused the agency to lose some its clients and teachers.
“COVID has done a lot of damage business wise,” Aldrich said.
“It’s been a scary time for me. I wasn’t sure that we’d make it through December. I was like if we don’t have teachers out there, how we are going to survive this, but opportunities were presented.”
