Hungary to Help Slovakia Test Sputnik V After Licensing Controversy

Hungary to Help Slovakia Test Sputnik V After Licensing Controversy
Slovakia has ignited a controversy around the Russian Sputnik V vaccine after its drug testing agency not only announced that it cannot license the vaccine due to missing information, but even asserted that the Sputnik V doses currently in use around the world are only the same in name, not composition. Despite Sputnik V’s producers demanding the return of their vaccine over the statement, Hungarian authorities have promised to help Slovakia test the Russian vaccine in EU approved labs. Meanwhile, multiple countries in Europe have begun preparations to purchase the vaccine through bilateral deals with Russia.

PRAGUE, April 10. /TASS/. A formal review of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine for Slovakia will be carried out by a Hungarian lab, part of Europe’s OMCL (Official Medicines Control Laboratory) network.
The decision was made during Friday’s visit to Budapest by Slovakian deputy premier and Finance Minister Igor Matovic, who recently had to resign from the post of the country’s premier. His resignation came as a result of a governmental crisis triggered by Sputnik V purchases, made before the jab’s use is officially authorized in the European Union.

“We are in a pandemic and our principle weapon for ending this and saving lives is the vaccine,” vaccine coordinator Capt. Joseph F. Penta was quoted as saying in a news release. “We owe it to ourselves, our family and country to make every effort to stop the pandemic.”
Receiving the vaccination was voluntary and medical personnel were on hand to answer any questions about the process, the release said.

The Latest: Quebec imposes earlier curfew for Montreal

By The Associated Press
MONTREAL —- The Quebec government is imposing an earlier curfew for Montreal and the suburb of Laval as it tightens COVID-19 restrictions for the second time in three days because of a third surge of coronavirus infections fueled by more contagious virus variants.
Premier Francois Legault announced that beginning Sunday, people in Montreal and Laval will have to remain at home from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. or face fines of more than $1,000 Canadian (US$800).
Last week, Legault placed Quebec City, Levis and Gatineau under the earlier curfew, advancing it from the previous 9:30 p.m. start. The government also closed schools and non-essential businesses in those three cities for at least 10 days, and Legault announced Thursday that those measures would be prolonged until April 18.
