Hello: Jason Hewlett

Next up on our list of backlogged Hellos is Jason Hewlett, defensive athlete from Youngstown, Ohio. Hewlett represents one of three recent 2023 Michigan commits from Ohio, as the Michigan staff tries to build a bridge into the Buckeye State more seriously than at any other time in Harbaugh's tenure.     GURU RATINGS RATINGS BY SITE 247: 6'4/220 On3: 6'3/215 Rivals: 6'3/215 ESPN: 6'3/210 4 , 90, NR Ovr #21 ATH, #10 OH 3 , 89, NR Ovr #32 LB, #16 OH 3 , 5.6, NR Ovr #44 ATH, #23 OH 3 , 79, #42 MW #33 OLB, #14 OH 4.01 3.93 3.66 3.87 COMPOSITE RANKINGS 247 Composite On3 Consensus MGoBlog   3 , 0.8752, #684 Ovr #55 ATH, #20 OH 3 , 87.9, #565 Ovr #57 LB, #1 OH 3.5 , #479/762 Ovr #57/84 Edges since 1990 3.75 3.79 3.84 Last row is Seth's conversion to a five-star scale. Links are to profiles Everyone seems to agree he's either 6'3" or 6'4" and somewhere in the 210-220 lbs. range. The rankings have much more disagreement than the measurables. 247 is pretty bullish on Hewlett, ranking him in the 4 tier, while Rivals is the lowest on him, putting him outside the top 20 of players even in the state of Ohio. ESPN and On3 are somewhere in between, leaving the composite ranking juuust short of the top 500 nationally, but he has the profile (just from the rankings) of someone who there is going to be a range of opinions about. Not uncommon in today's mess of a scouting landscape.  [AFTER THE JUMP: Guess his position!]

Upon Further Review 2022: Defense vs. Colorado State

Help, what are all these words? The UFR Glossary. Substitution Notes: Backups got a lot of play. Morris and Harrell were the starters at edge, with Taylor Upshaw matching them for snaps as Morris slid down to DT for pass rush packages. Backups were Derrick Moore and Braiden McGregor, with spot appearances at weakside for Eyabi Anoma. DTs were Mazi and Jenkins with Graham and Benny rotating in (more for Jenkins than Smith) and a third team of Rooks and Goode. Safety was Rod Moore and Moten, who rotated with Paige until Moore came out with the starters for Kolesar. Sainristil held down nickel all game, including when CSU went 2TE. CB was DJ Turner and Gemon Green mostly with Will Johnson rotating in for a drive here and there. Formation Notes: Updating the “Hi” column this year to provide more information on the secondary alignment. Press/Off are self-explanatory. “Fld” or “Bdy” mean only the field or boundary CB is playing off. Reminder that "Hat" (as in: tip o' the…) means the other team's player did a thing all on his own. It can be positive (helped) or negative (nice job, guy on other team). CSU's favorite formation was a 3-wide with the TE half-flexed. Michigan's formations were mostly the same as last year's plus this 5-1 look from Nickel personnel (that's Barrett at the top). I called it "Nk 5-1" They also rolled out a 3-3-5 look with Upshaw (on the 45 below the hash) dropped back like a LB. Nk 3-3-5. And this was the look before the 4th and 7 strip-six, which I called "Y-Stack" because the SS, WLB, and Edge are all over the TE, with Paige down near the LOS. Michigan brought the house. On epithets, pseudonyms, sobriquets, and general patronymity: When I say "Green" I mean Gemon; I'll use "German" when it's his brother. The Johnson is Will, and if Quinten plays he can be Q-Jo. "Moore" is Rod Moore, and Derrick Moore is "D-Mo." The Pollards are going by their first names, Micah (the LB) and Myles (the CB). NHG=Nikhai Hill-Green. Juice=Julius Welschof. And Kody Jones is K.Jones for the purposes of future-proofing. Apologies to the people who asked me to use full names, but the tradeoff is fewer mistakes. Also "PR" means pressure, "cov" is coverage, and "RPS" is rock-paper-scissors, IE effects of the play calls. Let's do this! [After THE JUMP: So many guys to talk about, one huge caveat]

Himself at Maximum Volume: An Excerpt from THE HOT SEAT by Ben Mathis-Lilley

From the Editor: We're about to launch into the season preview week, so what better time  to yell "Here's some important reading material!" at you. Fact is, the preview is going to be as useless in a week's time as the notes an author took in 2020 while preparing to write a book about Harbaugh's program at Michigan. Friend of the blog Ben Mathis-Lilley, who's written for Slate, the NY Times, MGoBlog, and some publications that don't make you throw things, has written a book about Michigan and being a fan of it. Last year he spiraled through Michigan's program, from the outer rim of insane fandom (IE an MGoBlog game thread) to the core of Schembechler Hall, to capture all the frenzy, absurdity, and potency of college football as an institution, specifically ours. What follows is an excerpt from this book, which is called THE HOT SEAT, A Year of Outrage, Pride, and Occasional Games of College Football. It can be purchased in myriad mysterious ways like giving money to an online bookstore, giving money to an electronic bookstore, or transacting with a purveyor of audiobooks. There are also two Live Events for this book that may be in your proximity and featuring guests of interest:   ANN ARBOR BROOKLYN When August 30 (tomorrow), 6:30pm September 13, 6:30 pm Where Literati Bookstore 124 E Washington, Ann Arbor 48104 The Dram Shop 339 9th Street, Brooklyn 11215 With Austin Meek of The Athletic Jane Coaston of the NYTimes Link? Link! Link! Also we might have him on MGoRadio, as soon as we figure out if we're doing that in-person this year. Anyway, I said there would be a sample. It's from the part that's mostly interviews with people who know Jim Harbaugh personally, like Josh Metellus, Donovan Peoples-Jones's mom, and Ben Muth, a star tackle for Harbaugh at Stanford who's now a writer for Football Outsiders (IE the place that's qualified to call Michigan the #1 team in Special Teams). In classic Ben Mathis-Lilley fashion, he got all these guys talking all about who Harbaugh really is as a person, then convinced them not to take any of it back, probably because it was only going in a book and not some website that everybody reads.
