How Rodin found beauty in deformity

Did a grisly medical museum inspire the twisted forms that led the sculptor to his breakthrough?

Art and science seem chalk and cheese in our own time, but scroll back 150 years and they were enthusiastic bedfellows. Any swish soirée in Vienna or Paris would have included as many neurologists as novelists, and nobody batted an eyelid when, in London in August 1881, specimens relating to a lavish medical congress were exhibited next to the Royal Academy of Art in a temporary “museum”.

A Harris County grand jury has indicted three people who tried to illegally influence races in two Houston-area state House districts during the 2020 election cycle, District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Friday.
The impacted districts were House District 132 and House District 142, currently represented by state Reps. Gina Calanni, D-Katy, and Harold Dutton, D-Houston, respectively. Dutton's reelection bid made headlines earlier this year after questions were raised about whether one of the candidates on the ballot in his March primary actually existed. None of the allegations involved the voting process or the casting of illegal ballots.

HOUSTON – Earlier this year, State Rep. Harold Dutton (D-Houston) faced his first runoff in his 36 years of representing District 142, and it was all because of a candidate who prosecutors said never existed.
Dutton got the highest number of votes during the Democratic primary in March, but not enough to avoid a runoff with the second- and third-place finishers.
Prosecutors said Friday that an investigation revealed that the third-place candidate, Natasha Ruiz, was actually Natasha Demming, who filed under a false name. Prosecutors accused Demming of conspiring with Richard Bonton, who was another candidate in the District 142 race, to manipulate the vote.

Harris County Grand Jury Indicts Three Democrats for Election Fraud

By KTRH News
Dec 11, 2020
Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced that a Grand Jury indicted three people Friday in two different failed schemes intended to affect the outcomes in two Texas House of Representatives’ local districts during the 2020 election cycle. The impacted districts were HD 132 and HD 142.
“Our democracy depends on keeping our elected officials safe from coercion and our elections free from illegal manipulation,” Ogg said. “Those indicted today crossed the line from dirty politics to criminal activity and they will pay the price.”
Democratic political consultant Damien Jones was indicted for Coercion of a Public Servant and False Caller Identification Information Display for an anonymous threat texted to then State Representative Gina Calanni in an attempt to coerce her into resigning her position in HD 132, instead of running for re-election. The threat was made on Dec. 2, 2019 just days before the 2020 election filing deadline. Instead of resigning, Calanni reported the threat to the Texas Rangers, who in conjunction with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Public Corruption Division, investigated the complaint. If convicted of the two Class A misdemeanors, Jones faces up to a year in the Harris County Jail and up to a $4000 fine or both.
