Crown calls moose driver's testimony 'an insult'

The defence says a Sahali resident was doing a favour for a friend when he was caught with illegally shot moose in a pickup he borrowed from a friend.
But a prosecutor said Wednesday that Waldemar Sancewicz tried to use a native man as cover in case he was pulled over for illegally transporting dead wildlife.
The trial in provincial court finished Friday with final submissions from the Crown and defence lawyer Matt Ford.
Sancewicz is charged with unlawful possession of dead wildlife and making a false statement to an officer, both offences under the Wildlife Act.
Sancewicz told provincial court Judge Stephen Harrison that a mechanic whom he knew at a local truck shop called him, asking Sancewicz to transport moose shot by another man who occasionally worked at the shop.

Social workers fear client in custody dispute, court hears

A North Shore social services office is in "lockdown" over fears of a father embroiled in a child-custody battle.
A Crown prosecutor Tuesday outlined measures taken by Secwepemc Child & Family Services to protect staff from Frederick Philip Shupe.
"All of them are expressing a real fear of Mr. Shupe," said Crown lawyer Neil Flanagan. "I've been told the Sydney Avenue office is now in lockdown . . . . Workers are afraid of him."
Shupe, 45, was convicted after trial on two counts of uttering threats. In the first instance he left a message on a social worker's voicemail stating "he will haunt her until she dies," Flanagan said.

There are countless stories about deep secrets and shameful cover-ups that have been orchestrated by government officials over the years in Washington, DC. One of the least known but most painful chapters in DC’s history involves what is now an idyllic park managed by the National Park Service: Fort Reno. This 20-acre park, which sits at the highest point in the city (409 feet above sea level), now hosts a soccer field, basketball and tennis courts, as well as rolling hills and wooded glens that border a public middle and high school. There is an iconic tower that looks out over a reservoir as well as a community garden, walking paths, and a stage that hosts a famous summer concert series. Fort Reno is considered a treasure in the neighborhood of Tenleytown, where million-dollar homes grace tree-lined streets. But what many residents of the District do not know is that Fort Reno was once home to over 340 white and black families. This thriving community existed for close to sixty years before racist individuals, scheming organizations, and unjust government officials acted to forcibly remove families, condemn properties, and invoke imminent domain to dissolve and erase the community known as Reno.
