i don't need to go out and caucus. this is something donald trump has said time and time again, telling his supporters, pretend that we are losing by a point, that we are not winning in the polls. he wants people to actually show up. now, part of that is also because they want to set the tone for the primary season. they want a definitive win here that would curb any momentum that any candidates are having. that's their big goal. one of the things we talked about, they are really trying to bring out first time caucus goers. whether or not this weather stops people who have never caucused before, that's going to be something interesting to watch. >> and what about after iowa is the former president already looking to new hampshire? >> his team is certainly looking to new hampshire. they are spending a combined between the super pac and the campaign, $4.5 million right now on the air waves, attacking nikki haley on immigration. that is not any kind of coincidence. they are seeing her rise in the

around the election changed the dynamics of the republican primary, but no, it's just not an issue with the republican base. it's not. clearly, it's not one that holds the american public at large back, because, again, trump is up. i love nikki haley because she's up ten, 15 points, on biden. she win senate seats, governorships, and brings those other opportunities to the states, and the country, to actually get stuff done. make no mistake, biden is that bad of a president, even trump would win. >> he saying that bad of a president, even trump would win, even if trump is a convicted felon? >> yes. the poll say yes. people know that. guys, the four court cases that are out there, we will see where they are, but right now, they are not playing into whether folks would vote for trump or not. i can be a surprise that that is you, but that's where it is right now. it's just a fact. look at the polls. the data is clear. it's not just one poll, its

the internationalists, the more traditional positions on entitlements. all the data tell us the trump wing of the party is not only strong but strengthening. all these house republicans, all these other candidates around the country, she's trying to essentially say, if you want your old republican party back, iowa, you go first on monday, new hampshire follows. you don't want to stop trump biden, forget about it. >> we're going to be talking to florida governor ron desantis shortly. let's go to kaitlan, in new york. thanks, anderson. we have got our panel. alyssa,, as we watch this debate play, out donald trump was not on that stage. that was the one thing ron desantis and nikki haley, agreed on. he should be on that stage. but neither of them really sought to draw a contrast with trump in a meaningful way. there was this one moment we're jake and dana we're asking him about trump's -- terminate the constitution and how they felt about. it this is how nikki haley responded to the question. >> governor haley, isn't there

obviously, he's the most vocal supporter of nikki haley, it was prominent, someone who is instrumental in getting her over the edge in new hampshire. for him to go up and go full never trump, go full chris christie, could be harmful to nikki haley. i will read into this as a strategic calculation. fundamentally, what i think was missed in that conversation, and i know governor sununu knows, is there is a portion of the republican party that is caring about the conversation around trump's character, and around his fitness. it is not where the basis, but we are a party where you need to turn out not just the base to win the elections. to win a general election, the idea that you would run a convicted felon against biden, purely to be joe biden? what does that say about our party? i'm assuming, this is a tactic. i've heard it from other politicians in this game, but i think the public is just not there. >> i'm more cynical. i think the governor sununu knows that nikki haley, maybe

poll, after poll, after poll. it shows that trump would at least be within the margin of error, a nail-biter, for sure, but some of these candidates, like nikki, we'll win by double digits. that's fundamental. that means you get stuff done. again, you can talk about those issues as much as you want, but it's not what the american public is looking at. maybe what the media has talked about, but not what american voters are looking at right now. >> it could be in the general election, and that's what governor desantis says articulated. governor sununu, thank you. back to the panel now. alyssa, governor sununu had inched closer in previous interviews, saying he would vote for trump if he was the republican nominee, and obviously, he is endorsing governor haley, and out here supporting her, but, basically, point blank said, yes, he would vote for donald trump, even if he was a convicted felon. >> i won't criticize my favorite governor, kristen who knew. listen, reading the tea leaves here, there is a chance that republicans who engage in the primary need to plan.

this is something trump does incredibly well, whether you like his policies or not, he walks into the dairy queen, everybody loves him. it's a -- you can feel. is this stage, nobody wants to set next to either of those people on a long airplane trip. that's not what you want to. do you have to convey, that could get the cross somehow to the voters. because it's to some extent a popularity contest. >> they did come right out of the, gate jamie, attacking one another. it was and therefore statements. notable because of their back-to-back town halls last week, they start out of the direct criticism of one another. not surprising because they were both on site. but it seems like they were forgetting that donald trump wasn't the rice. >> no question about. it the gloves came off. and i was told by both campaigns that's actually what they wanted. haley had to do a knockout punch and same for desantis. so that was certainly the tenor of what you got. but it turned into everything

final four days and were undecided after millions of dollars in television ads, and they've likely had a candidate dropped by your town, or knock on your door, and the reason is, some of these candidates, these voters, excuse, me are looking for a winner. it was a leading alternative to donald trump. he was watching the debate, and the debate validated their views. if you like to say it is going in, you like to bring out. if you like taylor going, and you thought she did well, but a couple things stand out in the next couple of days. the candidates are moving to strategic points across iowa. nikki haley, focusing on the suburban areas, the larger suburban areas. that is a key part of her strategy. trying to win over those moderate republicans, but also, with some of those people wanting to move on the former president. it was to the rapids, it was near south dakota, it was

of these debates, because his opponents were tearing each other apart, and he danced away from it. >> with what i've seen that trump did in that town hall, with any of these moments, the controversial ones, the gaps, whatever, would it have even been challenged by desantis, and haley, if they were on a debate stage? that's a problem to. trump says all kinds of stuff, but they aren't really willing to go there to, take him to task on it. really, what would be the point? the other, as you've interviewed ron desantis, talking about, what are the expectations for him on the organizational front, trump is more organized this time around, but so is desantis. but if he ends up coming out of iowa, basically, in the same place as nikki haley, to me, it calls into question the value of all of that ground game here in iowa. >> having participated in this process, if we're winning campaigns, and losing campaigns, it turns out, you can be well organized, but you need a good

will go where the political wind blows, and they're fine with that. if you are and nikki haley, or a ron desantis, it gets harder to be in this sanctimonious place, and say, well, he isn't pure enough on this issue. the voters have basically said, that's his authenticity. this is a very real issue for these candidates. they cannot undermine the flip-flopping, which voters see is authenticity. >> transactional-ism has become authenticity for him. a lot of voters are cynical about politicians anyway, and they like the trump admits to transactionalist, where they don't think the other politicians will admit it, and that is where he scored's on, the authenticity. he will tell you on the truth, even if it makes him look like a flip-flop or on something. >> we are going to take a short break, but just ahead, we touched on this a moment ago, more on what chris christie's decision for ending his presidential campaign means for this race.
